A cover letter for a faculty position tells a search committee who you are as a scholar and teacher, what you will research next and why this department is the place to do it. Below are six complete faculty cover letters, for a tenure-track scientist, a humanities historian, a teaching-focused college, a business school, a community college and a lecturer post, checked in November 2026. Each one names the position, gives one research result and one teaching result, and ends with a clear fit statement. Pick the one closest to your field, keep its order and replace the contents.
A search committee reading sixty letters in a weekend does not need to be told you are passionate about teaching. It needs to be told which course you would teach on Tuesday.
Example 1: a tenure-track position in the sciences
This is the research-university letter. Open with the position and your research area, give two or three results, say what you will do next, and show that you know the department.

Entry level: Assistant professor, tenure-track, biology (227 words)
Dear Members of the Search Committee,
I am applying for the tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Microbial Ecology in the Department of Biology. I am a postdoctoral fellow at Northfield University, where I study how soil bacteria respond to drought, and I will have completed my fellowship by August.
My doctoral and postdoctoral work has produced eight papers, four as first author, including a study in a leading ecology journal showing that drought-tolerant bacterial groups shift carbon use within days. I secured a three-year postdoctoral fellowship from a national science foundation to extend this work to field sites.
My next programme asks how those shifts scale up to whole ecosystems. I plan to combine field sampling with sequencing and modelling, and to apply for early-career grants from federal agencies. Your department's work on soil carbon at the Lakeview Research Station is a natural partner, and I would welcome collaboration with Dr. Mehta's group on isotope methods.
I have taught as a teaching assistant for four courses and designed a lab on microbial growth for 60 undergraduates. I have mentored five undergraduates in research, two of whom are now in graduate school. I could teach Microbiology, Ecology and a graduate course on microbial genomics.
My CV, research statement, teaching statement and three letters of reference are attached. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely, Dr. Elena Torres

What the university career offices say
Faculty letters follow academic habits, so use academic sources. MIT's communication lab gives its criteria for a faculty letter in its guide to the faculty cover letter: "You clearly define the vision and impact of your future research program." It also says "You establish what your niche will be in the department." And on length: "Your letter is no more than 1 page long."
Berkeley's career office disagrees on length, which is useful in itself. In its page on the academic cover letter it says: "Your cover letter should not exceed a page and a half or two at the most." It also warns that the letter should add to the CV: "The cover letter should not simply repeat the information contained in the CV".
Penn's career services lists the questions a faculty letter must answer in its guide to faculty cover letters. It also says: "A strong cover letter will be tailored to the institution to which you’re applying." Length varies by field, so read the posting and ask your advisor.

Mid level: Assistant professor, history, humanities (217 words)
Dear Professor Okonkwo and Members of the Search Committee,
I am writing to apply for the tenure-track Assistant Professor of Modern European History, advertised in your department. I completed my doctorate at Carlton University in May, and my book manuscript on labour migration in postwar Germany is under contract with a university press.
My dissertation uses municipal archives in four German cities to show how guest workers shaped housing policy. Two articles from the project have appeared in peer-reviewed journals, and I presented the work at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association. My second project follows migrant families across the Mediterranean in the 1970s and draws on oral histories, which I plan to collect with support from a fellowship application this year.
I have taught my own course on twentieth-century Europe at Carlton for three semesters, with 35 students each, and I have designed a seminar on migration that uses primary sources in translation. I would be glad to teach your survey of modern Europe and a new upper-level course on migration and borders.
I was drawn to your department's Center for Global Migration, and I would contribute to its workshop series on migration histories.
My CV, writing sample and teaching portfolio are enclosed. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, Dr. Marcus Reid

Mid level: Assistant professor, teaching-focused college (200 words)
Dear Members of the Search Committee,
I am applying for the Assistant Professor of Mathematics position at Elmwood College. I have taught mathematics for six years, the last three as a visiting assistant professor at Redfield College, and I am drawn to a department where teaching is the centre of the job.
At Redfield I teach calculus, linear algebra and a statistics course for nursing students, with classes of 24 to 30. After the first year I redesigned the calculus sequence around weekly problem sessions, and the pass rate in my sections rose compared with the previous two years. I have supervised four senior projects, one of which was presented at a regional undergraduate conference.
My research in graph theory fits a small college: it can be done with undergraduates. I have published three papers with student co-authors, and I plan to involve two or three students each summer.
I have read your department's statement on first-year support, and I would like to help run the tutoring centre and the first-year seminar. I am also glad to teach in your general education programme.
My CV, teaching statement and letters are attached. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely, Dr. Aisha Rahman

Mid level: Assistant professor, business school (206 words)
Dear Members of the Search Committee,
I am applying for the Assistant Professor of Accounting position at the Halden School of Business. I will receive my PhD in Accounting from Westbrook University in June, and my dissertation examines how audit firms respond to changes in disclosure rules.
My job market paper uses a sample of 4,200 firm-years and finds that audit effort rises after a rule change in a way that varies with firm size. It is under review at a leading accounting journal, and I have presented it at two annual conferences. Two other working papers, one with my advisor, are in progress. I plan to extend the work to private firms in my next project, using data that your faculty have already worked with.
I have been the instructor of record for an undergraduate financial accounting course for two semesters, with 45 students each and an average evaluation of 4.5 out of 5. I could teach financial and managerial accounting, and a PhD seminar on empirical methods.
Your school's Accounting Research Workshop is one of the reasons I am applying, and I would like to contribute to it.
My CV, job market paper, research statement and teaching statement are attached.
Sincerely, Dr. Kevin Zhao

Mid level: Full-time faculty, community college (177 words)
Dear Hiring Committee,
I am writing to apply for the full-time Nursing Faculty position at Riverside Community College. I am a registered nurse with 11 years of clinical experience in medical-surgical care and three years of part-time clinical teaching, and I hold a Master of Science in Nursing Education.
As an adjunct clinical instructor at Riverside, I supervise groups of eight students on a medical-surgical unit, teach skills lab sessions and give written feedback after each shift. Of my last three student groups, all passed their clinical evaluations on the first attempt. I also helped write a new simulation scenario on patient deterioration.
Your programme serves many first-generation students and working adults, which matches my own background and my teaching style. I use short, structured sessions, plenty of practice and clear expectations. I am comfortable with your learning management system and have used it to deliver hybrid lectures.
I would welcome the chance to join your faculty and help students prepare for the licensing examination. My CV, transcripts and certification are attached.
Sincerely, Teresa Moreno, MSN, RN

Senior: Lecturer, non-tenure-track, university (195 words)
Dear Members of the Search Committee,
I am applying for the Senior Lecturer position in Computer Science. I have taught computer science at the university level for 12 years, 7 of them as a lecturer at Brookfield University, and I run the department's first-year programming course.
I teach about 400 students a year across three courses, supervise a team of 14 teaching assistants, and rewrote the introductory course in 2023 to include automated feedback on assignments. The course now has a shared bank of exercises, which three other instructors use. I have also published two papers on computing education and co-authored an open textbook.
I am looking for a role where teaching leadership is formally part of the job. I would like to coordinate the introductory sequence, train new teaching assistants and work with advisors on student support. I am also glad to contribute to curriculum review and accreditation work.
Your department's recent move to a project-based first-year curriculum is the reason I am applying. I have run a similar pilot and can share the materials.
My CV, teaching portfolio and letters of support are attached. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely, Dr. Hannah Brooks
The order of a faculty cover letter
- Opening. The exact position, the department and where you are now. Say if you are finishing a degree.
- Research. Two or three results and what you will do next. Name the funding you plan to seek.
- Teaching. Courses you have taught or could teach, class sizes and one teaching result.
- Fit. One or two specific things at this institution: a centre, a course, a person, a facility.
- Enclosures. List what is attached, such as the CV, research statement and teaching statement.
- Length. One to two pages, depending on your field. Check the posting and your advisor.
For the CV that goes with the letter, read our academic CV examples. For layout, see the cover letter format guide, and for the difference between a CV and a resume, the CV versus resume guide. For related job pages, see the adjunct professor cover letter, the assistant professor resume and the research scientist cover letter.
What to leave out
- A repeat of your CV. Pick the three results that fit this job.
- A generic letter. If the department name could be swapped for another, the letter is not finished.
- Claims of passion. Name the courses, projects and students.
- Hedging about your future work. Say what you will do, not what you hope to explore.
- A letter for the wrong kind of school. A research university and a teaching college want different weights.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a cover letter for a faculty position be?
One to two pages, depending on your field and the institution. MIT's communication lab says one page; Berkeley says a page and a half or two at most. Check the posting first.
What should I include in a faculty cover letter?
The exact position, your research and a next step, your teaching experience, a specific reason for this institution, and a list of enclosed documents.
Should I address a faculty cover letter to a person?
Yes if the posting names a chair or committee head. Otherwise, address the search committee.
Is a faculty cover letter different from a research statement?
Yes. The letter is an introduction and a case for fit. The research statement is the full plan and the teaching statement is the full philosophy.
Do I need a different letter for a teaching college?
Yes. Open with teaching, show results with students, and treat research as something you do with undergraduates.
