Cover Letter Examples Ireland: 4 Full Letters and Format

Irish employers read a covering letter for one thing, which is whether you have read the advert, so the letters below each answer a named vacancy rather than a job type. Four whole ones follow, at graduate, experienced, public sector and career change level, plus a speculative letter. The four-paragraph structure used throughout is the one published by University College Cork Career Services, checked in September 2026, and the public sector wording comes from publicjobs.ie. Every letter is annotated paragraph by paragraph against the rule it satisfies. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Dear Mr Lynch
I am applying for the Trainee Accountant position in your September intake, which I saw on gradireland. I graduated from the University of Galway in July with a Bachelor of Commerce, a 2.1, and I have secured six of the nine Chartered Accountants Ireland exemptions available on my degree.
I am interested in your practice in particular because it is mid-sized and audit-led. During my summer internship at a Galway firm in 2025 I spent nine weeks on audit fieldwork, including three stocktakes and a full receivables circularisation for a client turning over 6 million euro. I found a 14,000 euro cut-off error in the sales ledger that the manager took to the client. I would rather do that work in a practice where a trainee is in the room with the client than in a large firm where a first year is on one section of one audit.
I have enclosed my CV, which gives my modules, my results and my two referees, including the audit senior who supervised me last summer.
I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the role and I am available for interview from 22 September onwards.

What the sifter is scoring
- Paragraph one identifies and names. UCC's structure asks the opening paragraph to "Identify yourself: then indicate the position for which you are applying and state where you learned about the vacancy".
- Paragraph two does the persuading. UCC: "State why you are interested in this work and this organisation. Briefly mention your academic background, relevant qualification(s), and related work experience which qualify you for the position." The cut-off error is the part only she can claim.
- Paragraph three points at the CV. UCC: "Refer to the fact that you have enclosed your CV or application form, and draw attention to any further points of relevance to your application."
- Paragraph four closes on availability. UCC: "Reiterate your interest and indicate your availability for interview."
- The sign-off matches the salutation. She has a name, so it is Yours sincerely. No comma after the salutation is the usual Irish convention.
The Irish format conventions
The structure above is not a house style. It is the one University College Cork Career Services publishes in its sample cover letters, and it has four named paragraphs.

Quoted: "Third Paragraph: Refer to the fact that you have enclosed your CV or application form, and draw attention to any further points of relevance to your application." (UCC Career Services)
Quoted: "Final Paragraph: Reiterate your interest and indicate your availability for interview. Close your letter with a confident statement which will encourage a positive response." (UCC Career Services)
The layout rules that go around those paragraphs:
- Your address and phone number at the top right, the date under them, in the order UCC's template shows.
- The recipient's name, title, organisation and address on the left, above the salutation.
- Eircodes on the last line of each address.
- A Re: line naming the vacancy and any reference number.
- The salutation. UCC's template prints it as "Dear Name (or Sir/Madam as appropriate)", so use the name where the advert carries one.
- The sign-off follows the salutation. UCC's template prints "Yours sincerely (or faithfully)", the first after a name and the second after Sir or Madam.
- One page. Mobile number rather than a landline, and an email address you check.
- British and Irish spelling throughout: organisation, specialise, programme, recognise.
Tip: Write "covering letter" rather than "cover letter" in the body of any Irish application. Both are understood, but the first is the term used in Irish careers services and in most Irish job adverts.

I am applying for the Senior Quality Engineer post advertised on IrishJobs on 6 September. I have eleven years in Class II and Class III device manufacturing in Limerick, the last four as a quality engineer on a sterile packaging line, and I hold a Level 8 degree in Manufacturing Engineering from the Technological University of the Shannon.
Your advertisement asks for CAPA ownership, audit readiness and process validation. I own our CAPA system for two production cells, closing an average of 24 CAPAs a year. When a customer complaint pointed to seal integrity failures in the field, I led the investigation, traced it to a heat sealer that was drifting between preventive maintenance intervals, and changed both the parameter tolerance and the verification frequency. Field complaints on that product line fell from nine in 2024 to one in 2025.
On audits, I have been the process owner in four notified body audits and two FDA inspections, with no observations raised against my areas. I also wrote and executed the IQ, OQ and PQ protocols for a new tray sealer commissioned in 2025, which released to production two weeks ahead of the plan.
My CV sets out my full employment history, my validation experience and my referees, including my current quality manager, whom I would ask you to contact only after an offer stage.
I am in Cork most weeks and could meet at short notice. I am available for interview from 18 September.

What the sifter is scoring
- Seniority is established in the first four lines. Years, device class, current specialism and qualification level, which is what an experienced hire screen looks for first.
- Each advertised requirement gets its own evidence. CAPA, audit readiness and validation are answered in the order the advert listed them.
- The numbers are the ones an engineer would actually hold. Twenty-four CAPAs a year, nine complaints down to one, a two-week early release.
- The referee condition is handled politely. Saying when the current manager may be contacted protects him without looking evasive.
- The close is practical. Geography and interview availability both answered, which matters for a cross-county move.
Public sector covering letter, annotated

I am applying for the Executive Officer open competition advertised on publicjobs.ie with a closing date of 25 September. I have completed the online application form in full, and this letter accompanies my attachments.
I have worked for four years as an administrative officer in a Dublin further education college, and the competency areas in the Information Booklet are the ones my job is made of. On delivery of results, I administer the college's grant applications to a national funding body, about 340 learner claims a year, and I brought our submission error rate from 11 per cent in 2023 to under 2 per cent by building a single checking sheet and using it on every claim before submission.
On interpersonal and communication skills, I handle the counter and the phone for a service used by learners who are often anxious about money. I explain an entitlement in plain words, I confirm the next step before the call ends, and I record what was said so the next colleague is consistent.
On specialist knowledge, I am the person who reads the circulars. When the funding rules changed in 2025 I summarised the change in one page and briefed six colleagues before the new claims opened.
I have attached my CV as requested in the Information Booklet. All of the evidence above appears in my application form with dates.
I am available for interview at any stage of the campaign.

What the sifter is scoring
- It defers to the form. publicjobs.ie states: "The application form is designed to ensure you can clearly demonstrate the skills and experiences that you have." The letter supports it rather than repeating it.
- The Information Booklet is named. publicjobs.ie: "It is essential that you read the Competition Information Booklet fully to understand the role requirements, eligibility criteria and application process."
- The competencies are addressed in the booklet's own words. Each paragraph opens with a competency area, which mirrors how the form is scored.
- The CV is attached only because it was asked for. publicjobs.ie: "This is only a requirement if the Competition Information Booklet indicates that a CV is necessary, usually only for very senior roles or specific technical positions."
- The evidence is consistent with the form. publicjobs.ie warns that "The evidence you provide on the application form may be used for shortlisting and/or interview stage", so a letter that contradicts the form is a risk.
The form itself is the real exam in an Irish public sector competition. Work through worked publicjobs competency answers and then Irish competency interview questions and answers before you submit.

I am applying for the Facilities Supervisor role advertised on your website on 4 September. I have spent twelve years in professional kitchens, the last six as head chef of a 90 cover restaurant in Kilkenny city, and I am moving into facilities work deliberately rather than reluctantly.
I am aware this is a change of sector, so I will be specific about what carries across. I supervise a brigade of nine across a seven-day rota, and I write that rota myself inside a weekly labour budget. I hold HACCP responsibility for the premises, which means I own a documented system, a daily record and an annual inspection by the local environmental health officer. We have held the top rating at every inspection since 2021. I manage supplier relationships for 18 accounts and I negotiate the contracts.
Your advertisement lists rostering, contractor management, compliance records and reactive problem solving. Those are four of the things I already do, in a setting where the consequences of getting compliance wrong are immediate.
What I do not yet have is a building services background. I completed a QQI Level 5 module in facilities management in June, at my own expense, and I am booked on a safe pass course this month.
My CV lists my full kitchen history, my HACCP and food safety certification, and two referees, including the restaurant's owner.
I can start with four weeks notice and I am available for interview any morning.

What the sifter is scoring
- The change is owned, not excused. Saying the move is deliberate rather than reluctant answers the question the reader is already asking.
- The kitchen is translated into the advert's vocabulary. Rota becomes rostering, HACCP becomes compliance records, suppliers become contractor management.
- Compliance is evidenced by an external body. An environmental health officer's rating is a third party confirming the claim.
- The gap is named with a date attached. A finished Level 5 module and a booked safe pass beat a sentence about being a fast learner.
- Availability and notice are given. Four weeks and any morning, which lets the manager schedule without a further email.
The speculative letter, when there is no advert
Irish hiring, especially outside Dublin, still runs on speculative approaches. The structure is the same, but paragraph one has no vacancy to name, so it has to earn its place another way.

I am writing to ask whether you expect to recruit laboratory technicians in the coming months. I am a BSc Biotechnology graduate of Munster Technological University, and I am contacting you directly because your Carrigaline site is the only accredited water testing laboratory in the area and my final year project was on coliform detection methods.
I spent eight months on placement in a food testing laboratory in Cork, where I ran routine microbiological analysis on around 60 samples a day, maintained the media preparation schedule, and was trained on the laboratory information management system. I hold a clean record on internal audit checks across that placement.
I have enclosed my CV. If you have no vacancy now, I would be grateful if you would keep it on file, and I would welcome the chance to visit the laboratory for twenty minutes to understand what you look for in a technician.

What the sifter is scoring
- It asks a real question. A speculative letter that does not ask for something specific gives the reader nothing to reply to.
- It explains why this employer. Accreditation, location and a matching final year project, which is the substitute for naming an advert.
- It still carries one worked example. Sixty samples a day and a named system, so there is evidence to assess.
- The ask is small. Twenty minutes is easier to grant than an interview, and it often leads to one.

Each rewrite does the same two things. It replaces a description of your character with a description of your week, and it replaces "your team" with something taken from the advert.
Before you send it
- Check the letter answers the advert, not the job title. An advert for the same title at two firms will ask for different things.
- Check your CV carries every claim in the letter, with dates.
- Check the Eircode, the reference number and the spelling of the contact's name.
- Match the sign-off to the salutation, which is the small error Irish employers notice most.
- For a public sector competition, check the Information Booklet again for whether a CV is wanted at all.
- Proofread it after a night's gap, which publicjobs.ie also advises: "Allow time to proofread for any spelling or grammatical errors."
If you are applying across borders this season, the conventions move. Compare the Australian letters and the Canadian letters before you reuse a paragraph.
Frequently asked questions
What is an example of a good covering letter?
The graduate letter above is one: 289 words, four paragraphs, a named vacancy, one measured piece of evidence and a stated interview date. A good letter is judged by whether a second employer could receive it unchanged. If they could, it is not finished. UCC Career Services describes the aim of the second paragraph as "Summarise your talents and how they might benefit the employer."
What is the format for a cover letter in Ireland?
One page, with your address and phone at the top, the date beneath, the recipient's name and address on the left, a Re: line naming the vacancy, then four paragraphs and a matching sign-off. Use Eircodes, use a mobile number, and use Irish spelling. UCC's template prints the closing as "Yours sincerely (or faithfully)", the choice depending on whether you used a name.
What are the three golden rules in writing the cover letter?
Name the vacancy and where you saw it, prove one of its stated requirements with something that happened, and stop inside a page. Everything else is detail. UCC's opening paragraph rule covers the first, its second paragraph rule covers the second, and the one-page convention covers the third.

Addressing it to nobody when the advert carries a name. Mismatching the salutation and the sign-off. Describing your personality instead of your week. Repeating the CV rather than pointing at it. Are cover letters outdated in 2026?
Not in Ireland. Irish adverts still ask for a CV and covering letter as a pair, university careers services including UCC still publish the four-paragraph structure, and speculative approaches remain a normal route into smaller Irish employers. The letter that is outdated is the one that could be sent anywhere. A letter that names the vacancy and answers it is still the cheapest advantage in the application.
