Cover Letter Australia Sample: 4 Full Letters, Annotated

A cover letter Australia sample is only worth reading if it is the whole letter, so four complete ones sit below: graduate, trades, career change and state government. The constraint that sets your length is the advertisement itself, because JobAccess says one page unless the ad allows more, and I Work For NSW says a good letter is usually no more than 300 words. The wording quoted on this page is taken from JobAccess, the Australian Government service, and from I Work For NSW, both read in September 2026. Every letter is annotated paragraph by paragraph, and four weak sentences are rewritten near the end. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Application for Graduate Environmental Officer, reference BES-2026-11, advertised on Seek
Dear Ms Ward,
I am applying for the Graduate Environmental Officer position advertised on Seek on 9 September. I finished a Bachelor of Environmental Science at Deakin University in July, majoring in catchment and water quality, and I want to start my career with a consultancy that does field work rather than desk modelling.
The advertisement asks for field sampling experience and the ability to write a report a client will act on. In my final year I ran the water quality component of a study on Waurn Ponds Creek for a unit assessed with an industry partner. I took monthly samples at four sites for six months, logged turbidity, pH and nutrients, and found a phosphorus spike downstream of a stormwater outlet. I wrote the 14-page report, and the partner asked me to present it to their asset team.
I also hold a current Victorian driver licence, a White Card, and first aid certification, all of which your advertisement lists as requirements. During two summers at a Torquay surf school I worked to a daily risk assessment and briefed groups of up to 20 people, so working safely in the field and explaining a hazard in plain words are habits, not theory.
My resume sets out my coursework, my software (QGIS and R), and my referees, including the unit's industry partner who supervised the creek study.
I would welcome the chance to talk about the role and I am available for interview at any time. You can reach me on 0412 884 219 or at the email address above.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my application.
Yours sincerely,
Aisha Nguyen
What the sifter is scoring
- Paragraph 1 does the naming. JobAccess: "Name the job you are applying for and where or how you heard about it." The letter gives the role, the board and the date it appeared.
- Paragraph 2 does the matching. One criterion from the ad, then one project with sites, months, a measurement and a result. It is a worked example, not a claim.
- Paragraph 3 does the requirements. Licence, White Card and first aid are ticked off because the ad listed them, and the surf school gives them a setting.
- Paragraph 4 does the pointer. JobAccess: "Make sure any experience you mention in your letter is listed in your resume." The referee named here is the same supervisor named in the creek story.
- Paragraph 5 does the close. Contact details repeated, availability stated, thanks given, which is the JobAccess closing instruction.
What an Australian employer asks the letter to do
JobAccess sets out the job of the letter in seven instructions. They are short and they are the whole test.
Quoted: "Keep your letter to one page, unless the job advertisement says the letter can be longer." (JobAccess)
Quoted: "Tailor the letter to the job and organisation – don’t send the same letter for every job." (JobAccess)
Quoted: "Name the job you are applying for and where or how you heard about it." (JobAccess)
Quoted: "Briefly describe the qualifications, skills, abilities and experience you have that suit the job." (JobAccess)
Quoted: "Make sure any experience you mention in your letter is listed in your resume." (JobAccess)
Two of those are quiet traps. The first is the last one: a claim in the letter that your resume cannot back up reads as invention. The second is the tailoring rule, because a generic opening paragraph is the fastest thing a reader can spot.
State government adds a harder rule. I Work For NSW states: "If the job ad asks for a cover letter, it's required. Make sure you include one with your application or you may not be considered." It then describes a good letter as one that "is brief (usually no more than 300 words)", "uses plain English", "is well structured", and "uses specific examples of what you've done and what you've achieved".
For Commonwealth roles the equivalent document is usually a pitch, not a letter. The Australian Public Service Commission in Cracking the code puts it plainly: "Remember to stick to the word limit—are they asking for a one or two page pitch or 1,000 word limit?" If your advertisement is an APS one, read our statement of claims page instead of this one.
The layout rules: what goes where
Australian letters follow business letter order. Nothing here is decorative, and every line is there because a reader looks for it.
- Your name, suburb, state, mobile and email, at the top. A full street address is optional now.
- The date, written out in full: 14 September 2026.
- The contact person's name and title, then the organisation and its address.
- A subject line naming the role and the reference number from the ad.
- The salutation. Use the name in the ad. Address it to the hiring manager by title only if no name is published.
- Three or four paragraphs: why this job, what you bring with one worked example, what your resume adds, and how to reach you.
- Sign off with Yours sincerely when you used a name, and Yours faithfully when you did not, then your typed name.
Tip: JobAccess also says to "Include your name and phone number in the header or footer of each page in case the pages become separated." Put them in the footer, not in a text box that an automatic system will drop.

Mr Stuart Reilly Operations Manager Kedron Commercial Plumbing Unit 4, 88 Sandgate Road Albion QLD 4010
Application for Commercial Plumber, reference KCP-114
Dear Mr Reilly,
I am applying for the Commercial Plumber role you advertised on Indeed last week. I hold a Certificate III in Plumbing and a current Queensland plumber licence, and I have worked three years in domestic maintenance and small renovation work since finishing my apprenticeship in 2023.
Your advertisement asks for hydraulic rough-in on multi-storey sites and for someone who can read a set of plans without hand holding. In my current job at a Brisbane maintenance firm I run my own van and about eight jobs a day, including two office fit-outs this year where I set out and installed rough-in for 11 wet areas across three floors from the hydraulic drawings. On the second of those I picked up a clash between the drawn stack position and an existing structural beam, raised it with the site supervisor before we cut anything, and we relocated the stack with no variation claim.
Safety is the part I will not rush. I hold a White Card and a confined space ticket, and I have never had a recordable incident on site. On a job with live services I stop and confirm the isolation with the supervisor rather than assume the tag is current.
My resume lists my licence number, my tickets, my apprenticeship employer and two referees, both site supervisors who have watched me work.
I can start with four weeks notice and I am happy to come in for a practical assessment. My mobile is 0447 302 661.
Thank you for considering my application.
Yours sincerely,
Daniel Papadopoulos
What the sifter is scoring
- The ticket list is early, not buried. Licence, Certificate III and the year of completion are in paragraph one, because that is the first screen on a trades application.
- The example carries a number and a decision. Eleven wet areas across three floors is the scale, and the beam clash is the judgement. JobAccess asks you to "Briefly describe the qualifications, skills, abilities and experience you have that suit the job."
- Safety is answered with behaviour. Stopping to confirm the isolation is a habit a supervisor can test at interview, unlike an adjective about being safety focused.
- The resume is cross-referenced. Licence number, tickets and referees live there, which keeps the letter to one page as JobAccess instructs.
- Availability is concrete. Four weeks notice and a willingness to sit a practical assessment answer the two questions a trades employer asks next.
Career change cover letter, annotated
Rebecca Tran managed a homewares store for six years and is applying for an operations coordinator role in a logistics business.

Ms Joanne Fitzgerald People and Culture Advisor Torrens Freight Group 19 Grand Junction Road Wingfield SA 5013
Application for Operations Coordinator, reference TFG-2026-07
Dear Ms Fitzgerald,
I am applying for the Operations Coordinator role advertised on your careers page on 8 September. I have spent six years managing a homewares store in Adelaide, and the work I am best at there is the operations work: rosters, stock, suppliers and the phone call when a delivery does not arrive.
I understand this is a change of industry, so let me be specific about what transfers. I roster nine staff across a seven-day trading week and I own the wage budget, which I have held inside 1 per cent of target for the last eight quarters. I place and reconcile orders with 22 suppliers, and I chase the ones who miss a delivery window. In 2025 I moved our stock counts from paper to a handheld scanner system, wrote the one-page procedure, trained the team over two Sunday mornings, and cut our stocktake variance from 4.1 per cent to 1.3 per cent.
What I do not have is freight experience, transport compliance knowledge or a forklift licence. I have read the Heavy Vehicle National Law overview and I am enrolled in a TAFE SA introductory logistics short course starting in October, at my own cost, because I would rather arrive knowing the vocabulary.
What I would bring on day one is a person who is calm on the phone, who reconciles rather than guesses, and who has spent six years solving problems for customers who are already annoyed.
My resume covers my full retail history, my systems experience and two referees, including my area manager.
I am available for interview any weekday after 2pm and can start with two weeks notice.
Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely,
Rebecca Tran
What the sifter is scoring
- The change is named in paragraph two, not hidden. A reader who has to work out why a store manager is applying will usually stop working it out.
- Transfer is shown with numbers a store manager would know. Nine staff, 22 suppliers, wage budget inside 1 per cent, variance from 4.1 to 1.3 per cent. Those are the operations tasks in the ad, done in another setting.
- The gap is stated, then closed. Naming the missing forklift licence and the enrolled course is more persuasive than silence, because the reader was going to notice anyway.
- Tailoring is visible. JobAccess: "Tailor the letter to the job and organisation – don’t send the same letter for every job." Nothing in this letter could be pasted into a retail application.
- The close gives logistics. Interview availability and notice period remove two emails from the process.
State government cover letter, annotated
Priya Raghavan is applying for a Clerk Grade 5/6 role with a NSW agency, where the advertisement asks for a cover letter of no more than two pages and a response to two targeted questions.

Ms Catherine Bui Talent Acquisition Partner NSW Department of Customer Service McKell Building, 2-24 Rawson Place Sydney NSW 2000
Application for Project Support Officer, Clerk Grade 5/6, job reference 00012K4Z
Dear Ms Bui,
I am applying for the Project Support Officer role, Clerk Grade 5/6, advertised on I Work For NSW with a closing date of 28 September. I have worked three years as a project officer in local government at Inner West Council, and I want to move into a delivery team with a larger program of work.
The role description lists Deliver Results and Communicate Effectively as focus capabilities, so here is one example against each.
On Deliver Results, I coordinated the council's 2026 footpath renewal program, worth 2.8 million dollars across 41 sites. I held the master schedule, ran fortnightly delivery meetings with three contractors, and tracked spend weekly. When wet weather cost us 19 working days in March, I resequenced the remaining sites by ward so that no ward lost its whole allocation, and we finished 38 of the 41 sites inside the financial year.
On Communicate Effectively, I write the resident notification letters for works that close a footpath. I rewrote the standard letter in 2025 after 60 complaints in one quarter, cutting it to one page in plain English with a map and a named contact. Complaints on notified works fell to 11 the following quarter.
My resume sets out my full employment history, my qualifications and my referees, including my current manager.
I am an Australian citizen and I hold a current NSW driver licence. I am available for interview from 23 September.
Thank you for considering my application.
Yours sincerely,
Priya Raghavan
What the sifter is scoring
- It is inside the NSW length rule. I Work For NSW: a good cover letter "is brief (usually no more than 300 words)". This one is written to that budget.
- It addresses the focus capabilities by name. I Work For NSW: "Address the focus capabilities listed in the job ad." The letter quotes two capability names straight from the role description.
- Each example is a STAR in miniature. I Work For NSW: "Good cover letters use the STAR method to structure your work examples by explaining the Situation, Task, Action and Result." Weather, resequencing, 38 of 41 sites.
- Achievement is quantified. I Work For NSW: "Focus on achievements, not just duties. Use numbers or outcomes where possible." Complaints from 60 to 11 is the result, not the activity.
- Eligibility is confirmed. Citizenship and licence are stated because NSW advertisements routinely list them as essential requirements.
The covering email that carries the attachments
JobAccess is blunt about the email itself: "If the employer asks you to send your application by email, keep your email brief and to the point." This is what that looks like.

Subject: Application for Commercial Plumber, reference KCP-114, Daniel Papadopoulos
Dear Mr Reilly,
Please find attached my application for the Commercial Plumber role, reference KCP-114.
Attached are my cover letter, my resume, and a copy of my Queensland plumber licence and White Card as requested in the advertisement.
I can be reached on 0447 302 661 or at this address.
Thank you for your time.
Kind regards,
Daniel Papadopoulos 0447 302 661
What the sifter is scoring
- The subject line is searchable. Role, reference and surname, so the reader can find it again in a full inbox.
- The email does not repeat the letter. JobAccess: "You only need to include your name, the job you're applying for, and mention that your application, resume and any other documents are attached."
- Attachments are listed. If the ad asked for licence copies, saying so stops a rejection for incomplete application.
The sentences that cost you the interview
These four appear in almost every letter I read when I was hiring. The rewrite is shorter and says something only this applicant could say.
| Weak | Rewritten |
|---|---|
| I am writing to express my interest in the above position. | I am applying for the Operations Coordinator role advertised on your careers page on 8 September. |
| I am a hard working team player with excellent communication skills. | I roster nine staff across a seven-day trading week and hold the wage budget inside 1 per cent of target. |
| I believe I would be a great asset to your organisation. | Your advertisement asks for hydraulic rough-in on multi-storey sites, and I set out rough-in for 11 wet areas across three floors this year. |
| I have attached my resume for your consideration. | My resume lists my licence number, my tickets and two referees who have supervised me on site. |
The pattern is the same every time. Replace the adjective with the thing you did, and replace "your organisation" with the name of the organisation and a detail from its advertisement.
Before you send it
- Read the ad once more and confirm it asked for a letter. If it did, I Work For NSW says you "may not be considered" without one.
- Check every claim appears on your resume as well.
- Check the length against the ad, then against the one-page JobAccess default.
- Check the contact name and the reference number character by character.
- Save it as a PDF unless the ad names another format, and name the file with your surname and the reference.
- Leave it a day, then read it again, which is exactly what JobAccess advises.
If the role turns out to be a Commonwealth one, the document changes shape. Start with selection criteria examples, then how to address selection criteria, and use attention to detail responses for the criterion that catches most applicants.
Frequently asked questions
What should a cover letter include in Australia?
The job title and where you saw the ad, the qualifications and experience that match the ad, one worked example, a pointer to your resume, and how to contact you. JobAccess sets it out as: "Name the job you are applying for and where or how you heard about it" and "Briefly describe the qualifications, skills, abilities and experience you have that suit the job." Add the tickets and licences the ad lists as essential.
What is the format for a cover letter in Australia?
One page, business letter order: your contact details, the date written in full, the employer's name and address, a subject line with the role and reference, a salutation using the person's name, three or four paragraphs, and a sign-off. JobAccess adds a formatting rule: "Use a standard font like Calibri or Arial at around 12-point size, put spaces between paragraphs, and leave space in the margins of your pages."
Are cover letters outdated in 2026?
Not in Australia, and for government roles the opposite is true. I Work For NSW states that if the job ad asks for a cover letter "it's required" and warns that without one "you may not be considered". JobAccess still treats the letter as a standard part of an application. For private employers a letter is optional in form and decisive in practice, because it is where you name the job and the reason.
What are 5 common cover letter mistakes?
Sending the same letter to every employer, which JobAccess warns against directly. Claiming experience that does not appear on your resume. Running past one page when the ad set no longer limit. Using heavy tables, columns or graphics that an automatic system may not read. Getting the contact name, the job title or the reference number wrong, which is the one mistake a reader assumes is carelessness rather than nerves.
What 5 things should a cover letter include?
A subject line with the role and reference, an opening that names where you saw the ad, a middle paragraph answering one stated requirement with a measured example, a line confirming your licences or tickets, and a close with your availability. For NSW Government roles, add the focus capability names from the role description, because I Work For NSW asks you to "Address the focus capabilities listed in the job ad".
