A designer cover letter is short, specific and points straight at your portfolio: name the role, say what you designed and what changed because of it, and link to one or two projects that match the job. Below are seven complete letters for UX, product, web, UI and fashion design, at entry, mid and senior level, and the structure behind them. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

A designer who sends a cover letter in six fonts has told me everything. A designer who sends five plain sentences and a link to one good project has told me more.

Example 1: a UX designer, first role

Start with a letter from someone with one internship and a bootcamp project. The portfolio does the talking, and the letter says which project to open first.

Entry level: Junior UX designer (118 words)

Dear Ms. Alvarez,

I am applying for the Junior UX Designer role at Brightpath Health. In my internship at a telehealth start-up, I redesigned the appointment booking flow after watching five patients try to use it, and the revised flow cut the steps from seven to four.

Your job post mentions designing for people who are not confident with technology. My case study at the link below shows how I tested a prototype with older users and changed the layout after two of them missed the main button.

I work in Figma, run usability tests and write up findings in plain language. I would welcome the chance to show you the full process.

What to say, and what the sources agree on

MIT's career office says in its guide to writing an effective cover letter: "Be sure that each cover letter is specifically tailored to the company you are writing to." It also says "Try not to simply repeat your resume in paragraph form, complement your resume by offering a little more detail about key experiences." For a designer, the extra detail is one project told as a story: the problem, what you did, what changed.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states the stakes in its graphic designers profile: "For many artists, including graphic designers, developing a portfolio is essential because employers rely on portfolios in making hiring decisions." So the letter has one job. It sends the reader to the right part of the portfolio.

Harvard's career services, in its guide to a strong resume and cover letters, says "Address your letters to a specific person if you can." If the posting gives no name, look at the team page of the company.

Complete Mid level: Product designer example, 106 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Mid level: Product designer (106 words)

Dear Mr. Okafor,

I am writing about the Product Designer role at Northwind Pay. For four years I have designed the invoicing tools for a small business platform, working with a team of six engineers and a product manager.

My most recent project replaced a settings page that was generating 30 support tickets a month. After research with eight customers and three rounds of prototypes, the tickets fell to about 10 a month within a quarter.

Your listing says the team ships weekly. I am used to small releases and to making decisions with incomplete data. The linked case study explains how.

Best regards, Priya Nair

Complete Mid level: Web designer example, 107 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Mid level: Web designer (107 words)

Dear Hiring Team at Alder & Finch,

I am applying for the Web Designer position. I design and build sites for small businesses in Webflow and WordPress, and I have delivered 22 sites in three years.

For a local dentist, I rebuilt the home page around three tasks: book, call and find the clinic. Online bookings rose after launch, according to the practice manager. I also care about speed and accessibility: every site I deliver passes a basic contrast and keyboard check.

I would like to bring that attention to your agency's client work. My portfolio includes two live sites you can open.

Kind regards, Marcus Webb

Complete Senior: Senior UX designer example, 121 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Senior: Senior UX designer (121 words)

Dear Ms. Ferreira,

I am applying for the Senior UX Designer role at Clearwater Software. I have led design on a B2B analytics product for six years, managing two designers and working closely with product and research.

Last year I led a redesign of the onboarding flow. We cut the time to first report from 21 minutes to 9 and moved activation up by a clear margin, according to our own data. I presented the results to the executive team and helped agree the next quarter's priorities.

I am looking for a role where I can set design direction and mentor. I have linked the onboarding case study and a short note on how I run critiques.

Yours sincerely, Hannah Brooks

Complete Mid level: UI and visual designer example, 110 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Mid level: UI and visual designer (110 words)

Dear Mr. Patel,

I am applying for the UI Designer position at Lumen Apps. I design mobile interfaces and design systems, and for the past three years I have maintained a component library of about 120 components used by five product teams.

Your advert mentions a design system that is out of date. I know the problem: in my current role I audited our system, removed 30 duplicate components and wrote usage notes for each remaining one, which reduced design review time.

I work in Figma and I am comfortable handing designs to engineers with clear specs. The portfolio link shows the library and two app redesigns.

Sincerely, Dana Reyes

Complete Entry level: Fashion designer example, 102 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Entry level: Fashion designer (102 words)

Dear Ms. Singh,

I am applying for the Assistant Fashion Designer role at Marlowe Knitwear. I graduated in fashion design this summer, and my final collection of eight knitwear looks was shown at my university's graduate show.

During my placement at a London label, I made technical packs for 12 styles, checked sample fits and worked with the pattern cutter on corrections. I know the work from sketch to sample.

Your range uses recycled yarns, which was also the focus of my final project. I have attached a lookbook with sketches, tech packs and photographs of the finished pieces.

Sincerely, Chris Taylor

Mid level: Freelance designer moving to in-house, complete example, 109 words

Mid level: Freelance designer moving to in-house (109 words)

Dear Ms. Gomez,

I am applying for the in-house Brand and Web Designer role at Harbour Foods. For five years I have worked as a freelance designer for food and drink brands, so I know the sector.

For one client, a small coffee roaster, I designed the packaging, the website and the launch emails. Their first online order batch sold out in two weeks. I want to move in-house to stay with one brand and see my work through over years, not weeks.

I deliver to deadlines, take feedback well, and I am used to managing several projects at once. Three recent projects are linked below.

Best, Amy Collins

What to leave out

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a cover letter for a designer job?

Name the role, tell one project in three steps (problem, action, result), mention the portfolio and tell the reader which project to open. Keep it to about 250 words.

Do designers need a cover letter?

If the posting asks for one, yes. Even when it does not, a short letter helps, because it points the reader at the right part of your work.

What should a UX designer cover letter include?

The role, a research or testing example, a result, your tools and a portfolio link with a case study that matches the posting.

Should a fashion designer cover letter be different?

It should mention technical work, such as tech packs, sourcing and fit, and include a lookbook or portfolio. The structure is the same.

Should the letter be designed like a portfolio piece?

No. Keep the letter plain and let the portfolio carry the design.
