Medical Scribe Cover Letter: 7 Examples From Pre-Med to Lead

By · Published · Updated

7 min read

A medical scribe cover letter has to prove three things in under a page: you type fast and accurately, you already know enough medical terminology to keep up with a physician, and you can stay quiet, focused and confidential for a long shift. Below are seven complete medical scribe cover letters, from a pre-med student with no clinical job to a chief scribe who trains others. Pick the closest one, change the details, and send it.

Most scribe applicants open with a lifelong dream of medicine. So does the applicant before them, and the one before that. The physician on shift does not need your dream. They need their notes done before the next patient.

Example 1: pre-med student, no clinical job yet

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Emergency Department Scribe position at Kestrel Point Medical Center. I am a junior biology major and can commit to at least four shifts a month, including two weekend shifts, for the next 18 months.

I have completed anatomy and physiology and a medical terminology course with an A, and I type 75 words per minute with accuracy checked on a timed test. As a volunteer at a free clinic, I check patients in, update intake forms and keep their information private.

I want to learn how emergency physicians think through a case, and scribing lets me do that while taking work off their plate. I am ready to complete your training and pass your documentation test.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Priya Raman

What the job is, in official terms

O*NET groups medical scribes with medical transcriptionists and lists "Medical Scribe" among the reported job titles. One of the tasks it lists is the core of the scribe job: "Identify mistakes in reports and check with doctors to obtain the correct information." Another is: "Review and edit transcribed reports or dictated material for spelling, grammar, clarity, consistency, and proper medical terminology." Accuracy and asking when unsure. Put both in your letter.

The University of Arizona's pre-health center explains on its pre-health jobs page why so many students apply: "Medical scribing is one of the best ways to gain clinical experience while learning about the medical field as a whole." If that is your reason, say it in one line and spend the rest of the letter on what you will do for the physician.

MIT's career office sets the length in its cover letter guide: "A cover letter should be no longer than one page with a font size between 10-12 points."

Example 2: EMT applying to an emergency department

Medical scribe cover letter example, Entry level: EMT moving to emergency department scribe

Entry level: EMT moving to emergency department scribe (108 words)

Dear Dr. Whitcomb,

I am applying for the Medical Scribe position in your emergency department.

For two years I have worked as an EMT on a county ambulance service, writing patient care reports for every call: history, vitals, assessment, interventions and transport. I know what a chief complaint and a review of systems are, and I know how to write them fast in a moving vehicle.

I want to see what happens after the hand-off at your ambulance bay. I can work nights and weekends and will keep my EMT certification current while I apply to physician assistant programs.

Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely, Marcus Bell

Example 3: CNA moving to scribing

Medical scribe cover letter example, Entry level: Certified nursing assistant to scribe

Entry level: Certified nursing assistant to scribe (117 words)

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Medical Scribe position at Briarstone Family Practice.

As a certified nursing assistant for three years on a rehabilitation unit, I have charted vitals, intake and output, and daily care in the electronic health record for 10 to 12 patients a shift. I am used to accurate documentation under time pressure, and I know how to protect patient privacy in a busy hallway.

I want to move closer to the clinical decision-making side of care. A primary care practice is where I can learn the most, and your posting's focus on chronic disease visits matches the patients I already know.

I would welcome an interview. Thank you.

Sincerely, Elena Ortiz

Example 4: remote or virtual scribe

Medical scribe cover letter example, Mid level: Virtual medical scribe

Mid level: Virtual medical scribe (120 words)

Dear Ms. Patel,

I am applying for the Virtual Medical Scribe position with your telehealth team.

For two years I have scribed remotely for three primary care physicians, documenting 25 to 30 visits a day in the EHR from a secure home office. I write the HPI, review of systems, exam and assessment and plan from live audio, and I flag every unclear medication or dose for the physician to confirm before signing. Chart completion for my physicians was same-day for every clinic day last quarter.

I have a dedicated, locked workspace, a wired connection and a backup power source. I completed annual HIPAA training this year.

I would be glad to complete a documentation test.

Best regards, Jonah Feld

Example 5: experienced scribe to a specialty clinic

Medical scribe cover letter example, Mid level: Scribe moving to orthopedics

Mid level: Scribe moving to orthopedics (101 words)

Dear Dr. Kwan,

I am applying for the Medical Scribe position at Corran Hill Orthopedic Associates.

I have scribed in an urgent care clinic for two and a half years, documenting sprains, fractures and lacerations for up to 40 patients a shift. I know the musculoskeletal exam terms, laterality, and how to record imaging orders and splint types correctly.

Orthopedics is the specialty I want to follow into a physician assistant program. I would bring clean, complete notes from day one, and I will learn your templates and your preferences for each surgeon.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely, Amara Osei

Example 6: medical assistant to scribe

Medical scribe cover letter example, Mid level: Medical assistant applying to scribe in dermatology

Mid level: Medical assistant applying to scribe in dermatology (93 words)

Dear Practice Manager,

I am applying for the Medical Scribe position at Fernwick Dermatology.

For four years I have worked as a medical assistant in a dermatology office, rooming patients, taking histories, setting up for biopsies and entering orders in the EHR. I already know the vocabulary: lesion descriptions, biopsy types, pathology results and follow-up intervals.

I want to focus on documentation so the providers can stay with patients instead of the keyboard. I am fast, I am accurate, and I ask before I guess.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Dana Kowalski

Example 7: chief scribe or scribe trainer

Medical scribe cover letter example, Senior: Chief scribe and trainer

Senior: Chief scribe and trainer (115 words)

Dear Dr. Abernathy,

I am applying for the Chief Scribe position in your emergency medicine group.

For four years I have scribed in a 45-bed emergency department, the last two as lead scribe. I build the shift schedule for 18 scribes, train every new hire through classroom sessions and supervised shifts, and run monthly chart audits against the physicians' feedback. Since we added a second supervised shift for new scribes, fewer of them leave in the first three months.

I want to lead a larger program and work with your physicians on templates and quality checks. I can share my training checklist and audit form.

I would welcome the chance to meet.

Sincerely, Rafael Mendes

What to leave out

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a medical scribe cover letter with no experience?

Name the job, then give your typing speed, any medical terminology or anatomy course, any volunteer or patient-facing work and your shift availability. Close by saying you are ready for the training.

What skills should a medical scribe cover letter mention?

Fast and accurate typing, medical terminology, EHR use, attention to detail, asking the physician to confirm unclear items, and patient confidentiality.

Should I say I am pre-med in a scribe cover letter?

Yes, in one sentence. Pre-health advisers recommend scribing for clinical experience, so employers will not be surprised. Spend the rest of the letter on what you will do for the physician.

How long should a scribe cover letter be?

One page or less, the limit MIT's career office gives for any cover letter. Keep the paragraphs short.

Do I need a certification to be a medical scribe?

Some employers train scribes themselves and do not ask for a certification. Check the job post, and mention any training or certificate you have.
