Musical Theater Resume: Format and 7 Complete Examples

A musical theater resume is a one-page credits sheet: your name and contact details at the top, then voice type and range, your shows and roles, your training and your special skills, attached to the back of an 8 by 10 headshot. The one constraint: it must fit on one page and every credit must be true. Musicnotes describes it as "a two-sided, one page resume: one side being your headshot, and the other being the text portion of your resume." Below are the sections in order, seven complete examples from a first audition to a union professional, and what to leave off. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
An audition panel sees dozens of these in an afternoon. The one that gets a call back is the one where the credits, the voice type and the dance skills are findable in three seconds.

The sections, in order
Musicnotes lists what the written side carries: physical attributes, voice type and range, previous roles and shows, education, training, relevant experience and special skills. In practice the order is:
- Name and header. Name large, then height, hair and eye color if the casting notice asks, and your voice type and range.
- Contact. An email and a phone number you answer. If you have an agent, list the agent instead of your own number.
- Credits. Three columns: show, role, theater or company. Most recent and most relevant first.
- Training. Voice, dance and acting teachers by name, and your degree or program.
- Special skills. Dance styles, dialects, instruments, stage combat and anything you can demonstrate in the room.
StageAgent's musical theatre template notes the same needs: it "includes key details like vocal range and dance abilities". Musicnotes also says "Be prepared to demonstrate any skills you've listed", and its list of dos ends with telling the truth. That is the entire rule for the special skills line: if you cannot show it in the audition room, cut it.

What to leave off
- More than one page. Musicnotes lists it first among the things not to do: "Create a resume that exceeds one page."
- Reviews or clippings. The same guide says they make the page "cluttered and confusing".
- A font smaller than 10 point. It is hard to read at a casting table.
- Your age. Musicnotes says age "is usually irrelevant in casting"; give a playing age range if the notice asks.
- Made-up skills. "Make up or exaggerate any skills, roles, or accomplishments" is the other item on its list of things to avoid. A director may ask you to do it in the room.
For performers with fewer credits, our acting resume with no experience page covers the beginner format in more depth, and the dancer CV example page covers dance-led resumes. For the cover letter that goes with a company application, see the artist cover letter guide, and for performing artists applying for grants or residencies, the artist CV page shows the exhibition-style format. Actors' Equity Association, the union for professional stage performers, is at actorsequity.org if you need its membership rules.
Frequently asked questions
What goes on a musical theater resume?
A musical theater resume has your name and contact details, voice type and range, height and other attributes if requested, your shows and roles, training and education, and special skills such as dance styles, dialects and instruments. Keep it to one page, in a plain font, and attach it to the back of an 8 by 10 headshot.
How do you format a musical theater resume?
Put your name at the top, then a header line with voice type, range and height, then three columns for credits: show, role and company. Add training and special skills below. Use one plain font, at least 10 point, and print it at 8 by 10 to match the headshot.
Should I include my voice range on a musical theater resume?
Yes. List your voice type, such as soprano, alto, tenor or baritone, and your range as notes, and add belt or mix range if you use it. Casting teams use the line to decide if you fit a part before you sing, so keep it accurate to what you can do on a normal day.
What do I put if I have no musical theater credits?
List school productions, community theater, concerts and choir work, then your training and special skills. Musicnotes suggests that if you lack experience you should add to your education, training and special skills. Take workshops or classes to start adding credits, and be honest about everything you list.
