A combination resume, also called a hybrid resume, puts grouped skills first and a short work history second. The one constraint is that the skills must be proven by the jobs below them, or a reader will ignore the top half. Alberta's government career service, ALIS, defines it plainly, and this page shows six complete samples from entry level to senior. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Most of the CVs I read were either a list of jobs with no point, or a list of skills with no proof. A hybrid fixes both if you build it carefully. Here is a finished one first.
A combination resume example for a career changer
This is a customer service worker moving into project coordination. The skill groups come from the target job, and the work history stays short.

What the format is, in the words of its source
ALIS says "A combination resumé organizes your accomplishments in skill categories to show an employer what you would bring to the job. Then it briefly outlines your work history." It adds that these resumes are useful "when you're applying for work that's different from what you've done until now."
The sections it lists, in order, are:
- Name and contact information
- Optional objective and summary of qualifications
- Skill titles, in 3 to 6 groups
- Experience
- Education
- Other, which is optional
That is the structure of every example on this page.
Combination, chronological or functional
The three formats differ in what comes first. ALIS says of the chronological resume: "You start with the most recent job and work your way back." It is best, in its words, "If you have a steady work history".
It says of the functional resume: "A functional resumé is ideal if you have gaps in your work history." A hybrid sits between the two. For the full functional format and why many employers distrust it, read our functional resume template guide. To compare all formats, see the best resume format page.

How to build your own
- Read the posting and pick 3 to 6 skill groups it asks for. ALIS suggests "3 to 6 groups".
- Write two bullets under each group, each with a real task and a result you know.
- Add a short work history: employer, title, dates.
- Check that every skill group is backed by a job in the history.
- Keep it to one page unless you have many years of relevant roles.

Frequently asked questions
What is a combination resume?
A combination resume puts grouped skills and accomplishments at the top, followed by a short work history. Alberta's ALIS says it "organizes your accomplishments in skill categories" and then "briefly outlines your work history." It mixes the chronological and functional formats.
When should I use a combination resume?
Use it when your next job differs from your past ones, when you are changing careers or when you have a gap. ALIS says these resumes are useful when you are applying for work that is different from what you have done before. If your history is steady and relevant, a chronological resume is simpler.
What is the difference between a combination and a hybrid resume?
None. Combination and hybrid are two names for the same format: a skills summary or skill groups above a reverse chronological work history. Different guides use different names, but the structure in these examples fits both.
How long should a combination resume be?
One page for most people. The skill groups take more room than a plain job list, so keep the work history to employer, title and dates, and drop jobs that do not support the target role. Senior candidates with long relevant careers may need two pages.
Do applicant tracking systems read combination resumes?
They read them if the layout is plain. Use normal headings, one column and standard fonts, and keep job titles and dates in the work history. Tables and text boxes can scramble the order. Our ATS resume tips cover the layout rules.
