A thank you letter for a scholarship is a short, sincere letter to the donor or committee that funded you: thank them by name, say what the award means for your studies, tell them a little about yourself and close warmly. One page is enough. Many schools make the letter a condition of the award, and most donors read every one. Below are seven complete letters for different situations, followed by what to include and what to leave out. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

The letters people remember are the specific ones. A line of general thanks is fine. A line about dropping a night shift and finishing a lab report on time is the one that gets remembered.

A scholarship thank you letter, before the rules

Here is a complete letter to a named donor, which is the most common case.

Maria Hernandez 412 Alder Street, Apt 3 Fresno, CA 93701 October 14, 2026

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield,

Thank you for the Whitfield Family Scholarship. I was thrilled to learn that I had been chosen, and I want you to know what it means to me.

I am a sophomore studying nursing at Fresno State. I am the first person in my family to go to college, and until this fall I was working twenty hours a week at a pharmacy to cover my books and bus fare. Your scholarship lets me cut back to weekends, so I can spend my weekday evenings in the study lab, where I am preparing for my first clinical placement in the spring.

After graduating, I hope to work in a community clinic in the Central Valley, where I grew up. Your generosity brings that goal closer.

Thank you again for believing in students like me. I will work hard to deserve it.

Sincerely, Maria Hernandez

It names the scholarship, says what the money changes in plain terms, tells the donor who she is and ends on a goal. That is the whole job.

What to include

The North Carolina A&T State University financial aid office, which publishes writing guidelines for its recipients, asks for three paragraphs. The first should "express your gratitude for the scholarship" and name the award. The second tells the donor about yourself: "your class year, major, GPA, honors, awards, and community activities, and/or leadership experiences." The third gives "some insight into your educational journey and future aspirations".

The same guidelines add practical rules. Address the donor by title and name: "Please address him or her as Dr., Mr., Mrs., or Ms., and spell his or her name correctly." If there is more than one donor, include every name in the greeting. Mention the scholarship by name in your introduction, spelled as in your award letter. And if you have more than one award: "If you have received more than one scholarship you are expected to write a thank you letter for each scholarship that you receive."

Central New Mexico Community College's financial aid office gives a shorter checklist. A letter should start with a greeting, express thanks, share "a little about yourself (major, year in school, career goals)", explain how the scholarship makes a difference and close with a warm thank you. Its tips are brief: "Be sincere and personal." and "Proofread before uploading." It also reassures students that a thank you letter does not need to be fancy: "A sincere, thoughtful note goes a long way."

In order:

How long and when to send

Keep it to one page. Del Mar College's writing center says a good letter is clear, concise and prompt, and that you should write one for each scholarship. The NCAT guidelines say a typed one-page letter is appropriate, and CNM tells students to keep it short. That is usually 150 to 250 words.

Send it as soon as you accept the award. Check your school's portal first: at CNM, for instance, the award stays pending until you "write and upload your thank you letter", so the letter is part of getting paid. If your school collects the letters, as NCAT's office does before it forwards them to the donor, follow its address and format.

Merit scholarship, to a committee

Scholarship committee: merit award, incoming first-year student (134 words)

Dear Members of the Scholarship Committee,

I am writing to thank you for the Presidential Merit Scholarship. Receiving it was the best news my family had this year.

I will begin at the University of Michigan this fall as a computer science major. In high school I led our robotics team and tutored younger students in algebra after school, and I hope to keep doing both in college. The scholarship means I can accept my place without taking on large loans, and it lets me say yes to joining the engineering society and a research group in my first year.

My goal is to build software for public health. I am grateful that your committee decided to invest in that goal.

Thank you for your time, your generosity and your trust.

Sincerely, Ethan Brooks

Need-based scholarship, first-generation student

Need-based award: first-generation community college student (132 words)

Dear Scholarship Donor,

I am truly honored to be the recipient of the Community Foundation Opportunity Scholarship. Thank you so much for your generosity and support.

I am a second-year student at a community college, majoring in business administration, and a single parent of one child. For the last year I have studied at night after my shift at a warehouse. This scholarship will cover my books and childcare for the spring semester, so I can take a full course load instead of two classes at a time.

I plan to transfer to a four-year university and open a bookkeeping practice for small local businesses. Your kindness inspires me to work hard and give back to others in the future.

Thank you again for helping me pursue my education.

Sincerely, Keisha Williams

Subject: Thank you for the Greene Foundation Scholarship

Dear Ms. Greene,

I am writing to thank you for the Greene Foundation Scholarship. I am a junior studying civil engineering at Ohio State, and your award covers the lab fees I could not otherwise afford. I plan to work on public water systems after I graduate.

Thank you for supporting students like me.

Sincerely, Luis Moreno

Renewal: thanking a donor for a second year (120 words)

Dear Dr. Okafor,

Thank you for renewing the Okafor Science Scholarship for my third year. I did not expect to receive it again, and I am deeply grateful.

Since I last wrote, I have joined a chemistry research group and presented a poster at our department's undergraduate symposium. I also work as a peer tutor for first-year students in general chemistry. Your support made both possible, because I no longer need a second job during the school year.

I will complete my degree in two more years and hope to apply to graduate programs in analytical chemistry. I will keep working hard in my classes and my lab, and I hope to make you proud.

With sincere thanks, Priya Raman

Graduate scholarship: master's student in public policy (120 words)

Dear Ms. Larsen,

I would like to thank you for the Larsen Fellowship in Public Policy. As a first-year master's student at the University of Washington, I am grateful for this support.

Before returning to school I worked for three years in a county housing office, where I saw how small policy gaps leave people without a home. I came to graduate school to learn how to fix them. Your fellowship covers part of my tuition and lets me take an unpaid placement with a housing nonprofit this summer.

After my degree, I intend to work in local government on affordable housing. Your faith in my plans means a great deal.

Thank you again for this opportunity.

Respectfully, Daniel Kim

Athletic or community scholarship, to an organization

Organization award: local civic club scholarship, complete example, 102 words

Organization award: local civic club scholarship (102 words)

Dear Members of the Rotary Club of Lakeview,

On behalf of myself and my family, thank you for selecting me for the Lakeview Rotary Community Service Scholarship.

I will start at Western Washington University this fall and plan to study education. For the last three years I have volunteered at the Lakeview library, running a weekly reading hour for children. The scholarship will help pay for my first-year tuition and housing, and I hope to return to Lakeview as a teacher someday.

I am grateful that your club values community service and has chosen to invest in my education.

Sincerely, Hannah Lopez

Frequently asked questions

How long should a scholarship thank you letter be?

One page, about 150 to 250 words. Three or four short paragraphs are enough.

Who do I address the letter to?

The donor, by title and surname, as shown on your award letter. If there is more than one name, include them all. If you only know a foundation or committee, address it to that group.

Can I send a scholarship thank you email instead of a letter?

Yes, if your school or the donor accepts it. Use a clear subject line that names the scholarship, and keep the email short. Check your financial aid office first, because some offices collect letters and forward them to donors.

What should I say if I do not know the donor?

Address the letter to "Dear Scholarship Donor" or to the committee, thank them, and say what the money allows you to do. You do not need to know anything about the person to be specific about your own situation.

Do I need to write a separate letter for each scholarship?

Yes. If you received more than one scholarship, write one letter for each, naming the correct award in each. Donors read their own letter, so a combined letter does not work.
