5 Rules Every Great Cover Letter Follows
Before you write your next cover letter, make sure it checks every one of these boxes.
Address it to a specific person whenever possible
A letter addressed to "Dear Hiring Manager" is fine, but one addressed to "Dear Ms. Chen" shows you did your homework. Check LinkedIn, the company website, or even call the front desk to find the right name.
Open with a hook, not "I am writing to apply for..."
Hiring managers read hundreds of letters that start the same way. Lead with a specific achievement, a genuine connection to the company, or an insight about the industry that makes them want to keep reading.
Show you have researched the company
Mention a recent product launch, a company value you share, or a news article that caught your attention. This signals genuine interest and separates you from candidates who send the same letter everywhere.
Quantify your achievements with numbers
Numbers are the fastest way to prove impact. Instead of "improved sales," write "increased quarterly sales by 34%." Metrics make your claims concrete and memorable.
End with a clear call to action
Do not let the letter trail off. Close by expressing enthusiasm, suggesting a next step like a phone call or meeting, and thanking the reader for their time. A strong close leaves a lasting impression.
