Cover Letter for Teacher Position Sample: 7 Full Letters

A teacher cover letter fits on one page and does three things: it names the school and the position, it shows one specific classroom result or experience, and it says why this school, in a sentence that could not be sent to any other. Below are seven complete cover letter samples for a teacher position, from a student teacher applying for a first elementary job to a career changer moving into the classroom, plus the structure behind them and the lines to cut.

Principals read a lot of letters that begin with always having loved children. Everyone has always loved children. It is a requirement, not a qualification. Start with what you taught and what happened.

Example 1: an elementary teacher, first job

A first-year teacher has student teaching and not much else. That is fine, because student teaching is real classroom evidence. Use it.

Dear Dr. Alvarez,

I am applying for the third grade teaching position at Maple Grove Elementary. I recently finished a 16-week student teaching placement in a third grade classroom of 24 students, where I taught reading and math with my cooperating teacher and led the classroom on my own for five weeks.

During that time I ran small reading groups at three levels. By the end of the placement, 19 of the 24 students had moved up at least one reading level on the school's benchmark assessments. I also set up a weekly family newsletter, which brought the number of parents who replied from 3 to 11.

I was drawn to Maple Grove by your focus on reading support in the early grades and the literacy coach role in your school plan. I would welcome the chance to bring my training in guided reading to your team.

Thank you for your time. I have attached my resume and teaching license.

Sincerely, Emily Carter

What the sources agree on

The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database describes the job of elementary school teachers as: "Teach academic and social skills to students at the elementary school level." Note the second half. Schools hire for social skills and classroom culture as much as for lessons, so a good letter mentions both.

Berkeley's career center, in its cover letter advice, is direct: "You should always include a cover letter for each application, even if the application indicates the cover letter is optional." For teaching jobs the letter is also a writing sample, which matters when the job is teaching writing.

Harvard's career services gives the format rules in its guide: "Keep letters concise and factual, no more than a single page." It also says "Address your letters to a specific person if you can." For schools, that is the principal or the hiring committee chair, whose name is usually on the district's job posting or the school website.

Dear Ms. Whitfield,

I am writing to apply for the fifth grade teaching position at Lakeside Elementary. For seven years I have taught fourth and fifth grade at Cedar Hill Elementary, where I lead the grade-level team of five teachers.

Three years ago I introduced a weekly problem-solving block for math. The share of my students scoring proficient on the state math test rose from 58% to 74% over two years, and the approach is now used across our grade.

Your school's project-based units in science are the reason I am applying. I have run a similar unit on watersheds, which ended with students presenting findings to a city council member. I would like to do more of that kind of work.

I have attached my resume and three references, including my principal.

Respectfully, Jonathan Reyes

Dear Hiring Committee,

I am applying for the seventh grade math teaching position at Riverside Middle School. I hold a state teaching license in mathematics for grades 5 to 9 and completed my student teaching in a seventh grade classroom of 28 students.

Middle school students ask, "When will I ever use this?" I answer it with a short real-world problem at the start of each lesson. In my placement, I used grocery prices, bike gear ratios and sports statistics, and my cooperating teacher noted that participation in the opening discussion rose over the term.

I also coached the school's math club of 12 students, who finished in the top five at the district competition. I would like to start a similar club at Riverside.

Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely, Priya Nair

Dear Mr. Okafor,

I am applying for the English teaching position at Oakmont High School. I have taught grades 9 to 12 for five years and currently teach three sections of 10th grade English and one of AP Literature.

My students write every week. I give feedback in short conferences instead of long comments, which has cut my grading time by about a third and lets students revise the same day. Last year 21 of my 24 AP students sat the exam, and 17 earned a 3 or higher.

Oakmont's writing center and student literary magazine are what draw me to the school. I advised our own magazine for three years and would like to help build on yours.

I have attached my resume and writing curriculum samples.

Sincerely, Michelle Torres

Complete Mid level: Special education teacher example, 129 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Mid level: Special education teacher (129 words)

Dear Ms. Bennett,

I am applying for the resource room special education teacher position at Westfield Elementary. I am a certified special education teacher with four years of experience in a K to 5 inclusion program, with a caseload of 14 students with IEPs.

I write each IEP with the classroom teacher and parents, and I track progress every two weeks with short data checks. Last year 11 of my 14 students met or exceeded at least one annual goal. I also co-teach reading in two general education classrooms.

Your district's co-teaching model is what I have been working in and what I believe in. I would be glad to talk about how I plan with general education teachers.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely, Daniel Brooks

Mid level: Career changer moving into teaching (140 words)

Dear Principal Nguyen,

I am applying for the science teaching position at Hillcrest Middle School. After eight years as a laboratory technician, I completed an alternative teacher certification program and am licensed to teach science in grades 6 to 8.

In my clinical practice I taught a unit on chemical reactions to 26 eighth graders. Because I worked in a lab, I could bring real equipment and real safety habits into the lesson. Students did 4 hands-on experiments in two weeks and wrote lab reports that I scored with a simple rubric.

I know that moving from the lab to the classroom is a big change. I have spent the past year as a substitute at two middle schools and a volunteer science club leader. I am ready to teach full time.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Aisha Rahman

Entry level: Substitute turned permanent teacher, complete example, 110 words

Entry level: Substitute turned permanent teacher (110 words)

Dear Ms. Ortega,

I am applying for the kindergarten teaching position at Sunrise Elementary. I have spent this year as a long-term substitute in the kindergarten classroom at Pine Valley Elementary, covering for a teacher on leave for 14 weeks.

I took over lesson plans, ran literacy centers and kept the daily routines steady for 20 five-year-olds. At the end, the classroom teacher wrote that the students had made the transition back with no setbacks.

Sunrise's play-based approach to early literacy matches how I teach. I would like to bring that energy to a classroom of my own.

I have attached my resume and letters of reference.

Sincerely, Laura Kim

What to leave out

Frequently asked questions

How do I start a cover letter for a teaching position?

Name the position and school, then add one fact that shows you can do the job, such as your student teaching placement or the grade you have taught for years.

How long should a teacher cover letter be?

One page, usually about 250 to 350 words. Principals read many, so keep it short and specific.

What should a first-year teacher put in a cover letter?

Student teaching, any substitute or tutoring work, your license and one result from the classroom. Add what you like about the school.

Do I need to mention my teaching license?

Yes, in one sentence: the subject and grade range you are licensed for. Attach the license if the posting asks.

Should an elementary teacher cover letter differ from a high school one?

The structure is the same. Elementary letters stress literacy, routines and families, and secondary letters stress subject knowledge, assessment and student writing or projects.
