PhD Application CV: Sections, Length and 7 Examples

A PhD application CV is a two-page record of your academic background and research experience, organized in nine sections: contact details, research interests, education, research and work experience, teaching, skills, publications and conferences, memberships and referees. The one constraint: it is read by a supervisor deciding whether you can carry a research project, so research experience carries more weight than anything else on the page. DiscoverPhDs says the purpose is "to provide a summary of your educational background and demonstrate the research skills and relevant experience you have that make you capable of undertaking a PhD." Below are the nine sections explained and eight complete examples, including a condensed full CV. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Nobody reads a PhD CV for charm. They read it to answer one question: has this person ever finished a piece of research, and can they do it again without being supervised daily.

The research interests section, done properly

The opening of a PhD CV is a short statement of what you study and what you can do. Aim for 50 to 60 words and tailor it to the project. A master's graduate applying to a materials science lab:

Entry level: Research interests, materials science applicant, complete example, 44 words

Entry level: Research interests, materials science applicant (44 words)

Research interests Materials engineer with an M.S. thesis on corrosion-resistant coatings for offshore steel. Experienced in electrochemical testing, scanning electron microscopy and data analysis in Python. Seeking a PhD project on protective coatings, with an interest in how coating structure changes under cyclic loading.

Count the claims: a thesis topic, three methods, a language and a direction. Every one of them can be checked in the rest of the CV.

The nine sections of a PhD CV

DiscoverPhDs recommends this order, and the other university guides below agree on most of it:

The WPI career center says "All publications and presentations should be included" in its CV handout, and lists them in their own sections. Use the same plan for yours.

How long a PhD CV should be

UC Santa Barbara's career site says "For beginning Ph.D. students, two to three pages is average." Its CV guide says advanced students grow to three to five pages, which is not you yet. DiscoverPhDs puts the target for a new research student at two pages, with four as the limit.

Two pages is the safe aim. Fill them with research, not with padding, and check the application pack for any page limit.

How the CV fits with the rest of the application

The CV is one part of a set. Your statement of purpose or personal statement explains why you want this project, and your referees confirm that you can do it. Keep the same facts in all three, because a supervisor will check them against each other. For the statement itself, see our master's personal statement guide. For listing papers and talks, our page on publications on a resume shows the formats. For the difference between a CV and a resume, see CV vs resume, and for how to list scholarships and fellowships, our awards on a resume page. A shorter example for students is on the graduate school applicant page.

Frequently asked questions

What should a CV for a PhD application include?

It should include contact details, research interests, education with thesis and modules, research and work experience, teaching experience, skills, publications and conferences, professional memberships and referees. Put research experience first among the experience entries, because supervisors weigh it more heavily than most other items on the page.

How long should a PhD application CV be?

Two pages is the safe target for a new research student. UC Santa Barbara's career site says two to three pages is average for beginning PhD students, and DiscoverPhDs allows up to four if needed. Check the application pack first, since some programs set a page limit.

Should a PhD CV include a personal statement?

A short research interests statement of 50 to 60 words at the top is enough. A full personal statement or statement of purpose is a separate document in most applications. Do not repeat its content in the CV; use the CV for facts and the statement for your reasons.

Do I need publications to apply for a PhD?

No. Most applicants have none. Replace the section with a presentation, a thesis, a poster or a manuscript in preparation, and say so honestly. A supervisor wants evidence that you have done research and can finish it, and a thesis and a methods list provide that.
