Resume Education Section Examples: 8 Formats to Copy

A resume education section lists each school in reverse order with the degree, the institution, the location and the graduation date, and adds a GPA, honors or relevant coursework only when they help. Where it sits depends on your stage: at the top if you are a student or recent graduate, below your work experience once you have a few years of it. Below are eight formats for the situations people actually have, from a current student to an unfinished degree. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
I have never hired someone because of where the education line sat. I have passed on people because I could not tell, from that line, whether they had finished.
The basic format
Start with the standard version. A graduate, degree first, with honors on a second line.

Entry level: Recent graduate, education at the top (31 words)
Education University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI Bachelor of Science in Biology, minor in Chemistry, May 2026 - GPA: 3.6/4.0; Dean's List, four semesters - Relevant coursework: Genetics, Organic Chemistry, Biostatistics

What to put in the education section
The UNC Honors Carolina resume guide lists the parts in one line: full university name, location, degree, major, any minor, the dates, and a GPA if you are happy with it. It also says "Honors/awards can be part of the Education section or its own section". The Harvard College resume sample shows the same pattern: school and location on one line, the degree and the date beside it, then coursework or activities underneath.
In short:
- School name and location.
- Degree and major. Write the full degree name, such as Bachelor of Arts in Economics.
- Graduation date. Month and year, or expected month and year.
- Optional lines. GPA, honors, relevant coursework, study abroad.
Leave out anything that does not help the job.
Eight formats, by situation
Current student: expected graduation

Entry level: Current student, expected date (26 words)
Education Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, expected May 2027 - GPA: 3.4/4.0 - Relevant coursework: Data Structures, Databases, Operating Systems
Graduate with a second degree

Mid level: Master's and bachelor's, reverse order (33 words)
Education Boston University, Boston, MA Master of Science in Public Health, May 2025
University of Vermont, Burlington, VT Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, May 2023 - Graduated cum laude; Psi Chi honor society
Experienced professional: education below experience
Once you have a few years of work, the job history comes first and education shrinks to two lines.

Mid level: Marketing manager, short education (15 words)
Education University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing, 2016
Degree not finished
Be honest and specific. State what you completed, not the title of a degree you did not get.

Mid level: Incomplete degree, credits stated (20 words)
Education Ohio State University, Columbus, OH Coursework toward a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, 78 credits completed, 2019 to 2021
Associate degree or community college

Entry level: Associate degree and transfer plan (25 words)
Education Austin Community College, Austin, TX Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene, December 2025 - Completed 600 clinical hours at the campus dental clinic
See associate degree on a resume for more on this case.
Certification, bootcamp or no college degree
When your formal education is a high school diploma, you can still show the training that counts. Lead with the strongest line.

Mid level: Certification and diploma, no college (29 words)
Education and training Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate, 2024 Chicago Technical Institute, 12-week evening course in Excel and SQL, 2023 Lincoln High School, Chicago, IL, High School Diploma, 2018
For the high school case in depth, see high school education on a resume.
Degree from outside the US

Mid level: Degree from abroad, with US equivalent (23 words)
Education University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria Bachelor of Science in Accounting, 2017 (equivalent to a US bachelor's degree) CPA candidate, exams in progress
Order, dates and wording
Keep the same pattern for every entry so the section reads as one block. Put the school first or the degree first, but not both ways on one page. Write dates the same way each time, such as May 2026, and use the full degree name on first mention. If you hold two degrees from one school, list the school once and the degrees under it, newest first. If a degree is still in progress, say so in the entry itself, not in your cover letter. A reader who has to guess will usually guess against you.
When to move education to the top or the bottom
- Top: you are a student, a recent graduate, or the job requires a specific degree.
- Bottom: you have a few years of relevant work experience that proves more than the degree.
- Its own training section: you have several certificates, and the degree is not what the job asks for.
What to leave out
- GPA below what you would be proud of. The UNC guide lists GPA as optional, to include only if you are happy with it. Leave it off if you are not, and be ready to answer if an employer asks.
- High school after your second year of college. The UNC guide says: "Employers care way more about what you’ve done in college than what you’ve done in high school".
- Every course you took. Pick the four or five that match the job.
- Graduation dates for older degrees, if age is a worry. You may leave the year off a degree from many years ago. The degree itself stays.
Harvard's career services wants resume language that is "Specific rather than general" and "Fact-based (quantify and qualify)", in its guide to a strong resume. For education, that means a named degree and a date, not a vague mention of studies.
A quick way to check yours
Cover everything but the education section and read it as a stranger would. Can you see what was earned, where, and when? If a line says only that you studied business at university, it fails the test. For the skills that sit beside it, see our resume skills section guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I list education on a resume?
Give the school, location, degree, major and graduation date for each entry, newest first. Add GPA, honors or coursework only if they help.
Where does the education section go on a resume?
At the top for students and recent graduates. Below work experience once you have a few years of relevant jobs.
Should I include my GPA?
Include it if it is strong and the employer is likely to care, or if they ask. Otherwise leave it out and let the experience carry the page.
How do I list a degree in progress?
Write "expected" with the month and year of graduation. If you will not finish, state the coursework and the credits completed.
Should I list high school on my resume?
Only if you have no college yet, or little else to show. After a year or two of college, drop it.
