School Counselor Cover Letter: 6 Examples by Level

A school counselor cover letter tells the hiring team how you work with students and what changed because of it: one story from a student or a group, one program or outcome with a number, and a line about the school you are writing to. Below are six complete letters for elementary, middle and high school counselors, an intern, a career changer from teaching and an experienced counselor, checked in November 2026. Pick the closest one, keep it to one page, and replace the details with yours.

Principals read counselor letters about a passion for helping every child reach their potential. Every child is a lot of children. Pick one group, one program and one result, and the principal can picture you in the building.

Example 1: elementary school counselor

Use a small group or a classroom program, and say what the children could do afterwards that they could not do before.

Mid level: Elementary school counselor (130 words)

Dear Dr. Alvarez,

I am applying for the School Counselor position at Maple Grove Elementary. For four years I have been the counselor for 520 students in grades K to 5 at Riverside Elementary, where I run classroom lessons, small groups and parent meetings.

Two years ago I started a lunch group for third graders who struggled with friendship conflicts. Over a semester, 14 students took part, and their teachers reported fewer playground referrals. I also built a calm corner routine with teachers that is now used in every classroom on our floor.

Your school's focus on social-emotional learning is the part of my work I enjoy most. I would welcome the chance to talk about how I could support your students and staff.

Sincerely, Jordan Lee, M.Ed., School Counselor

What the work is, and what career offices say about the letter

The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET summary for school counselors lists the tasks, including: "Counsel students regarding educational issues, such as course and program selection, class scheduling and registration, school adjustment, truancy, study habits, and career planning." and "Provide crisis intervention to students when difficult situations occur at schools." Your letter should show you have done a few of these, not all of them.

MIT's career office says in its guide to writing an effective cover letter: "Be sure that each cover letter is specifically tailored to the company you are writing to." For a school, that means the grade span, the district programs and the student population in the posting. Use the school's own name.

Fort Hays State University's cover letter handout sets the length: "Do not exceed one page of approximately three to four paragraphs." Counselors are used to keeping notes short and relevant. Do the same here.

Mid level: High school counselor, college and career (115 words)

Dear Mr. Okafor,

I am writing to apply for the High School Counselor position at Lincoln High School. As a counselor at a school of 1,400 students, I manage a caseload of about 280 juniors and seniors, focusing on post-secondary planning.

Last year I redesigned our senior planning process. We hosted college application workshops and a financial aid night, and 94 percent of seniors submitted at least one application by December, up from about three quarters the year before. I also work with the district on dual enrollment and career pathways.

I would welcome the chance to bring that approach to Lincoln. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely, Priya Nair, M.A., School Counselor

Complete Mid level: Middle school counselor example, 115 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Mid level: Middle school counselor (115 words)

Dear Ms. Singh,

I am applying for the Middle School Counselor role at Westbrook Middle School. For five years I have worked with students in grades 6 to 8, where I run transition programs, group counseling and conflict mediation.

One program I am proud of is a peer mentoring program that pairs eighth graders with new sixth graders. In its first year, 40 pairs met weekly, and sixth grade attendance improved over the previous year. I also co-lead the school's crisis response team and know the referral steps to community agencies.

Your posting mentions a school-wide wellness program. I would love to help build it. Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards, Marcus Webb, M.Ed.

Entry level: School counseling intern or new graduate, complete example, 118 words

Entry level: School counseling intern or new graduate (118 words)

Dear Ms. Gomez,

I am applying for the School Counselor position at Oakridge Elementary. I have just completed my master's degree in school counseling, including a 600-hour internship at Pine Valley Middle School.

During my internship I led two small groups on managing anxiety, with a total of 11 students, and ran 30 classroom lessons on bullying prevention. My site supervisor and I reviewed the results together, and I wrote each family a short note after the final session. I am licensed as a school counselor in this state, with my certificate dated this spring.

I would like to join a team that values early support for students. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely, Amy Collins, M.Ed.

Entry level: Teacher moving into school counseling, complete example, 117 words

Entry level: Teacher moving into school counseling (117 words)

Dear Dr. Patel,

I am applying for the School Counselor position at Cedar Park Elementary. I have taught fourth grade for six years and completed my school counseling certification this year, including a supervised practicum.

As a teacher, I was the person students came to when something at home was hard. I started a morning check-in routine in my classroom that cut late arrivals, and I organized a family night that about 60 parents attended. In my practicum, I led a six-week friendship group, and I know the school's schedule and the staff from the classroom side.

I would like to bring that experience into a counselor role. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Chris Taylor, M.Ed.

Complete Senior: Lead counselor, district level example, 120 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Senior: Lead counselor, district level (120 words)

Dear Dr. Ferreira,

I am applying for the Lead School Counselor position for the district. For eleven years I have worked as a counselor and for the last four as the department lead for a school of 1,800 students and eight counselors.

As lead counselor I redesigned our counseling schedule so that counselors spend more time in classrooms and groups and less on paperwork. I also introduced a data review each semester, which helped us put attendance support in front of 120 students flagged as at risk. I mentor new counselors and coordinate with community agencies on referrals.

I would welcome the chance to bring that experience to the district. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely, Hannah Brooks, M.Ed., LPC
