Cover Letter in Spanish: 6 Examples and How to Write One

A cover letter in Spanish, a carta de presentación, follows the same plan as an English one (who you are, why this job, what you bring, the next step) but uses formal usted, a colon after the greeting and a closing such as "Atentamente". The one constraint: write it in Spanish only when the posting is in Spanish or asks for it; for a bilingual job posted in English, write in English and prove your Spanish inside the letter. CareerOneStop, the US Department of Labor's career site, puts the rule plainly: "It's important to write a tailored cover letter for each position you apply for." Below are six complete examples, three in Spanish and three in English, checked in October 2026. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

You speak Spanish at home, with your grandmother and at the pharmacy counter. Then a posting says "bilingual preferred" and suddenly you are not sure whether to write the letter in Spanish, in English, or in both, with a flag emoji. Pick one language. The posting tells you which.

Which language should the letter be in?

Use the language of the posting. A posting written in Spanish, or one that says "send your carta de presentación in Spanish", gets a letter fully in Spanish. A posting in English that lists Spanish as required or preferred gets an English letter that shows the Spanish with evidence: who you served in Spanish, what you wrote or translated, and any test you passed. Never send the same letter twice in two languages; the reader asked for one document.

O*NET, the Labor Department's occupation database, defines foreign language knowledge as "Knowledge of the structure and content of a foreign (non-English) language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar, and pronunciation." Read that as a checklist: a letter that claims fluent Spanish should itself be correctly spelled, accented and punctuated.

Bilingual customer service cover letter (English)

Entry level: bilingual customer service representative, English letter (182 words)

Dear Ms. Delgado,

I am applying for the Bilingual Customer Service Representative position at Sunbelt Energy, posted on your careers page. I speak, read and write Spanish and English, and for the last two years I have used both every shift at a busy pharmacy counter.

At Valley Drug in Phoenix I help customers pick up prescriptions, sort out insurance questions and transfer refills, and about half of my conversations happen in Spanish. When older customers call confused about a denied claim, I explain the letter from their insurer in plain Spanish and stay on the line while the pharmacist calls the plan. Last spring I translated our store's refill instructions into Spanish, and my manager posted them at the counter.

Your posting asks for patience on the phone and accurate notes. I log every call in our system before the next one, and my notes are the ones the pharmacists ask for when a case comes back.

I would welcome a short call in either language. My resume is attached, and I am available weekdays after 3 p.m.

Sincerely, Marisol Herrera

Carta de presentación en español: recepcionista médica

When the clinic posts the job in Spanish, answer in Spanish. Keep the US layout (your contact details at the top, three or four paragraphs) and switch the conventions: usted throughout, a colon after the greeting, and a formal closing.

Estimada Sra.

Atentamente,

Daniela Ortiz

Spanish teacher cover letter (English)

A Spanish teacher writes to a principal, so the letter is in English unless the school is a dual language school that asks otherwise. The Spanish is assumed; what the principal wants is the grade band, the course load and one lesson you actually run. The Spanish teacher resume page has the matching resume, and our teacher cover letter examples cover other subjects.

Mid level: high school Spanish teacher, English letter (204 words)

Dear Dr. Whitman,

I am applying for the Spanish teacher opening at Lincoln High School for the coming school year. I hold a state teaching license in Spanish for grades 7 to 12 and have taught Spanish I, II and AP Spanish Language and Culture for five years at Riverside Middle and High School.

My classes run mostly in Spanish from the first week. Each unit ends with a task students would meet outside school: ordering at a restaurant in Spanish I, a recorded interview with a Spanish speaking family member in Spanish II, and a timed persuasive essay in AP. Last year I rebuilt the Spanish II curriculum around those tasks with one colleague, and the department now uses our unit plans.

I also teach heritage speakers, who need a different class from beginners. I group them for reading and writing in Spanish so they build academic vocabulary, not just conversation.

Your posting mentions starting a Spanish club and supporting the dual language pilot in the middle school. I ran the club at Riverside for three years and would gladly help with both.

My resume and references are attached. I am available to teach a demonstration lesson at your convenience.

Sincerely, Elena Castillo

Carta de presentación para un programa bilingüe

Dual language schools and Head Start programs often post in Spanish and English and accept either. If the program teaches in Spanish, a letter in Spanish is your writing sample.

Estimado Sr. Morales:

Atentamente,

Lucía Fernández

Bilingual case worker cover letter (English)

Social service agencies hire bilingual staff because clients need to understand forms, rights and deadlines in their own language. The O*NET profile for interpreters and translators lists this task: "Follow ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information." A case worker who interprets for clients is held to the same standard, so say how you protect it.

Senior level: bilingual case manager, English letter (180 words)

Dear Hiring Committee,

I am applying for the Senior Bilingual Case Manager position with Community Family Services. I have eight years of case management experience with Spanish speaking families in housing and benefits programs, and I currently supervise three case workers at Westside Family Center.

Most of my caseload has always been in Spanish. I conduct intake interviews, explain eligibility rules for housing and food assistance, and help families complete applications line by line so they know what they are signing. When a client needs an interpreter for a court or medical appointment, I arrange a certified interpreter rather than using family members, and I keep every conversation inside our confidentiality policy.

As a supervisor I review my team's case notes weekly and translated our intake packet and rights notice into Spanish with the agency's legal reviewer.

Your posting asks for someone to build a Spanish language intake line. I have done that once, from the scripts to the call schedule, and I would bring the same plan.

Thank you for your consideration. My resume is attached.

Sincerely, Ricardo Vega

Short cover letter email in Spanish

Many small employers ask you to "envíe su currículum por correo". The email body is the cover letter, so keep it to four or five sentences. CareerOneStop says the same for English applications: "You can use the body of the email as your cover letter, following the tips below."

How to write a cover letter in Spanish

The structure is the one you already know from our guide on how to write a cover letter. The conventions are what change.

PartIn SpanishNote
Greeting, name knownEstimada Sra. López: / Estimado Sr. López:Colon, not a comma
Greeting, name unknownEstimados señores: / A quien corresponda:Use the name whenever you can find it
Opening lineLe escribo para solicitar el puesto de...Name the job and where you saw it
BodyUsted, never túFormal from start to finish
Closing lineQuedo a su disposición para una entrevista.Offer the next step
Sign offAtentamente, / Cordialmente,Then your full name

Three more rules matter more than the table:

For the layout itself, see the cover letter format guide, and if the posting asks for something brief, the short cover letter examples work in either language. Not sure whether to send a letter at all? Our cover letter vs resume page answers that.

How to show Spanish in an English cover letter

"Fluent in Spanish" is a claim. "About half of my calls are in Spanish" is evidence. Name the people you served, the documents you wrote or translated, and any formal test or certification. O*NET describes interpreting and translating work as the ability to "Interpret oral or sign language, or translate written text from one language into another." If you have only spoken Spanish and never translated documents, say conversational or fluent spoken Spanish, and do not offer to translate legal or medical material in the interview.

Frequently asked questions

Should my cover letter be in Spanish or English?

Match the posting. A posting in Spanish, or one that asks for a Spanish letter, gets a letter in Spanish. A posting in English for a bilingual job gets an English letter that proves your Spanish with examples. Sending both versions is rarely wanted, because the reader asked for one document and now has to choose.

How do you start a cover letter in Spanish?

Open with "Estimado Sr." or "Estimada Sra." and the surname, followed by a colon, then a first line such as "Le escribo para solicitar el puesto de" and the job title. If you cannot find a name, "Estimados señores:" or "A quien corresponda:" is acceptable, but a name is always better.

How do you end a cover letter in Spanish?

Close the last paragraph with the next step, for example "Quedo a su disposición para una entrevista", then sign off with "Atentamente" or "Cordialmente" and your full name. "Saludos" is too casual for a first application. Add your phone number under your name if the letter goes by email.

What is a cover letter called in Spanish?

It is usually called a carta de presentación, so search for that rather than "cover letter en español" when you want local examples. In some countries you will also see carta de motivación, especially for study programs and internships. A resume is a currículum or currículum vitae, often shortened to CV, and a cover email may be called a correo de presentación.

How do I say I speak Spanish in a cover letter?

Give evidence instead of a label. Say who you served in Spanish, how often, and what you wrote or translated, then name any certification or language test you passed. If your Spanish is spoken but not written, say so honestly, because a bilingual interview often includes a short written task.
