Aged Care Resume: 6 Australian Examples and a Template

An aged care resume has to show a facility manager three things on the first page: the Certificate III in Individual Support, a current police check and immunisations, and the kind of care you have already given, whether residential, home care or dementia support. The constraint is conduct. The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission says "The Aged Care Code of Conduct describes how you must behave and treat older people in aged care", so the reader is checking for someone safe before someone experienced. Below are six complete aged care resume examples by level, a fill-in template and the questions people ask before they apply. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, a qualified care worker who has hired care staff and been hired as one.

Every aged care manager has a pile of resumes that open with "I have always wanted to help the elderly". She believes you. She still needs to know whether you can do a two person hoist transfer at 6.45am and write it up before handover.

Aged care resume with no experience

Most people enter aged care through study and a placement rather than a previous care job. SEEK's aged care worker guide puts it plainly: "To become an Aged Care Worker you typically need to complete a qualification in individual support." The current qualification is CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support, which training.gov.au lists as the current release. Put it at the top of the page with the month you finished, then make the placement read like a job.

Aged care resume for a career changer

People move into aged care from hospitality, retail, cleaning and childcare, and many have looked after a parent or grandparent at home. Lead with the qualification, then translate the old job into the things a care manager screens for: reliability, safe routines and talking calmly with families.

Home care worker resume

Home care runs on a roster of visits rather than a ward. The person reading your resume needs to know you can work alone in someone else's home, drive between clients and keep to time. SEEK lists tasks such as "Assisting with mobility, providing transport to and from medical appointment and light physiotherapy exercises", so write the visits, the travel and the client mix into your bullets.

Copy the order and fill in the brackets. Keep it to two pages at most; a first role fits on one.

What aged care managers check on a resume

Checks first. SEEK advises applicants to "complete certifications and checks such as a First Aid Certificate and Police Check." Put the police check year and your vaccination status in the header so nobody has to ask.

Conduct you can show. The Commission says "Workers are the foundation of safe, high-quality aged care." Show it with facts: incidents you reported, residents you knew well enough to notice a change, routines you kept when the shift was short.

The words in the advert. If the job asks for manual handling, dementia care or medication assist, use those exact words in a bullet with the setting attached.

Referees who can vouch for care. Your placement supervisor or a registered nurse is the strongest referee; our guide to referees on an Australian resume covers how to list them. For the checks themselves, see clearances on an Australian resume, and pair the resume with a letter from our Australian cover letter sample. Applying in the UK instead? Frequently asked questions

What should I put on an aged care resume?

Your contact details with police check year and vaccination status, a three sentence profile, your Certificate III or IV with the unit code, care experience or placement with the size and type of service, and bullets on personal care, manual handling and documentation. Add first aid, dementia training and referees. Match the job title used in the advert.

How do I write an aged care resume with no experience?

Lead with your Certificate III in Individual Support and treat the placement as your first care job, with its own heading, dates and bullets. Add caring for a family member and any job that shows early starts, food safety or customer care. Put your police check and vaccinations in the header and keep the resume to one page.

Is a personal care worker resume the same as an aged care resume?

Yes, in most of Australia the titles personal care worker, assistant in nursing and aged care worker describe similar work in residential care. The resume structure is the same. Copy the title from the advert into your profile, and name the setting, such as high care, memory support or home care, in every job heading.

How long should an aged care resume be?

One page for a first role or a recent Certificate III graduate. Two pages once you have several years in care or a team leader role. Keep jobs outside care to one or two lines so the qualification, checks and care experience stay in the top half of the first page.

What skills should I list on an aged care resume?

Personal care, manual handling with hoists, continence and pressure area care, mealtime assistance, documentation, infection control, dementia care and medication assist if you are trained. Show each one inside a bullet with the setting, rather than as a list of words, and add communication with families and the registered nurse.
