Care Assistant CV: 6 UK Examples and a Fill-in Template

A care assistant CV should tell a care home manager three things before she reaches the second section: the setting you have worked in, the personal care you can already do without supervision, and the checks and training you hold. The constraint is regulation. Under CQC Regulation 19, providers must check that staff are "of good character", so your CV has to read as reliable before it reads as anything else. The same rules apply to any care work CV, whether the advert says care assistant, carer or support worker. Below are six complete care assistant CV examples, tagged by level, and a fill-in template. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, a qualified care worker who has hired care staff and been hired as one.
The night manager of a care home has read the sentence "I have a passion for caring" so many times that she now reads it as a blank line. She is not looking for passion. She is looking for someone who turns up for the 7am handover and knows how to use a hoist.
Care assistant CV with no experience
You can apply without a care job behind you. The National Careers Service says "You can apply for care worker jobs directly", and adds that employers "will offer training to applicants who have the right personal qualities." Your CV has to show those qualities through things you have done, not adjectives.

What care home managers look for on a care assistant CV
Character they can check. The CQC guidance on Regulation 19 says providers should take account of "honesty, trust, reliability and respect." You show that with facts a reference can confirm: years in one home, a role you were trusted with, a training you finished.
A DBS they can see. GOV.UK explains that "If the applicant has signed up for the DBS update service you can check whether their certificate is up to date online". If you are on the Update Service, put it in your header so the manager can check it in minutes rather than wait for a new certificate.
The tasks in the advert. The National Careers Service lists care tasks such as "do routine checks of weight, temperature and blood pressure" and "notify senior staff of any concerns over clients' health and wellbeing". If you do those, write them as bullets with the setting attached.
No padding. Leave out your date of birth, a photo and a list of hobbies unless they relate to activities with residents; our guide on what not to include on a UK CV covers the rest.
Many homes ask for a supporting statement too, and the care worker supporting statement guide shows one in full. Before the interview, work through these care assistant interview questions. Working in supported living rather than a home? The support worker CV examples fit that setting better, and if you plan to train as a nurse later, the nursing CV example shows where you are heading.
Frequently asked questions
What should I put on a care assistant CV?
Put your contact details, a three line profile, your care experience with the type and size of the home or ward, any unpaid caring or volunteering, and your training: Care Certificate, diploma, moving and handling, safeguarding. Add your DBS status and a driving licence if the job needs one. Match the words used in the advert.
How do I write a care assistant CV with no experience?
Start with any caring for family or friends, then volunteering, then your current job written around people and procedures. The National Careers Service says time spent caring for someone you know counts as experience in a caring role. Say you will complete the Care Certificate and a DBS check, and keep it to one page.
What is the difference between a care assistant and a healthcare assistant CV?
A care assistant CV is usually for a residential or nursing home and leads with personal care, dementia and routines. A healthcare assistant CV is for a hospital or clinic and leads with observations, ward pace and working under registered nurses. The structure is the same; the profile and first bullets change.
What skills should a care assistant put on a CV?
Personal care, moving and handling with hoists and stand aids, nutrition and hydration support, care records, observations, infection control, dementia care and safeguarding are the core. Back each one with a bullet that shows where you used it. Calm, patient and kind are better shown in a bullet than listed as words.
How long should a care assistant CV be?
One page for a first care job. Two pages once you have a few years of care experience or a senior role. Keep older jobs outside care to one line each so the care experience sits in the top half of page one, where the manager looks first.
Is a care work CV different from a care assistant CV?
Not in structure. Carer, care worker, care assistant and support worker adverts all want the same evidence: the setting, the personal care you can do, your training and your DBS status. Change the job title in your profile to match the advert, and lead with the setting closest to it, such as home care visits or a residential home.
