The best paying non degree jobs in the United States are all safety-critical operating jobs, and in September 2026 the highest of them pays $148,080 a year. What makes the best paying job without degree possible is the license: every one of the eight below is gated by a certificate, a rating or a registered apprenticeship rather than by a diploma, which is why an employer can pay six figures to someone who never enrolled at a university. Every wage below is the 2025 median published on that occupation's own O*NET page, quoted with its occupation code and the date it was read, 12 September 2026. Six of the eight sit in what O*NET calls Job Zone Three, where "Most occupations in this zone require training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, or an associate's degree". The line workers and gas plant operators sit lower still, in the zone that "Usually requires a high school diploma or GED, though some occupations may not".
Air traffic controller: the highest paying job with no degree
At $148,080 the air traffic controller occupation page records the top median wage in this list, and its education panel marks a high school diploma or equivalent as a required level. Entry is by FAA hiring bid, medical, aptitude test and then the FAA Academy. Age limits are strict, so apply early.
The application is scored on demonstrated ability to hold multiple moving items in your head while talking. Give a job where that was literally the task.

The commercial pilot page puts the 2025 median at $123,220 a year with no hourly figure published, and the gate is an FAA certificate rather than a degree. The nuclear power reactor operator page records $122,890 a year and $59.08 an hour, in Job Zone Three. Utilities recruit heavily from the Navy nuclear program and from their own non-licensed operator ranks, then put you through a two-year license class.

Elevator installer and power-line worker: the two apprenticeship routes
These are the classic well paid job without degree answers, and both are earn-while-you-learn. The elevator installer page records $109,910 a year, and lists approved registered apprenticeship titles including "Elevator Constructor", "Elevator Repairer" and "Transit Elevator Escalator Technician". The power-line installer page records $95,320 and lists titles including "Cable Splicer", "Line Erector" and "Line Repairer". Vacancies are published on the Department of Labor's apprenticeship job finder.
Apprenticeship applications are ranked on mechanical aptitude, math and attendance, so the CV is short and factual.

How the pay numbers were checked
- Every wage is the "Median wages (2025)" figure printed on that occupation's own O*NET OnLine summary page, read on 12 September 2026, with the occupation code given in the table so you can open the same page.
- O*NET OnLine is sponsored by the US Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, and its wage panel carries both the hourly and the annual median where both are published. Commercial pilots have no hourly median, which is why that cell shows only a year figure.
- The "gate" column is the license or program named on the same occupation page, including the registered apprenticeship titles, which O*NET states are "vetted by industry and approved by the U.S. Department of Labor for use in a Registered Apprenticeship Program".
- Job Zone is O*NET's own preparation rating, quoted from the Job Zone panel on each page. Nothing in this article is a projection, an average of adverts or a figure from a salary aggregator.
Transportation inspector is the near miss at $92,100 a year, because O*NET puts it in Job Zone Four, where most occupations expect a four-year degree.
Three mistakes that cost people these jobs
- Applying with no ticket and no apprenticeship application in progress. The license is the job; without it you are applying for the training, so apply for the training.
- Hiding the shift reality. Every job here runs nights, call-outs or 12-hour rotations. Saying so on the CV is a qualification, not a confession.
- Leaving hours and volumes off the page. Hours at height, clearances issued, alarms acknowledged, flight time. These are the only numbers that separate two licensed candidates.
