Biologist Resume: 6 Examples From Field Tech to Lead

A biologist resume gets read by another scientist, so it wins on methods, organisms, permits and datasets, not on adjectives. Name the species or systems you worked with, the techniques you ran, the sample sizes you handled and what your data was used for. The one constraint: most biology jobs, from state wildlife agencies to federal positions, screen first on your degree and coursework, so education sits near the top until you have several seasons of paid work. O*NET describes the broad occupation as people who "Research or study basic principles of plant and animal life, such as origin, relationship, development, anatomy, and functions." Below are six biologist resume examples, tagged by level, plus the sections and wording that get a field or lab lead to call. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
You know the feeling. You spent a summer counting salamanders in the rain at 4 a.m., and the resume template wants you to call it "strong attention to detail." The salamanders deserve better, and so does your resume.
Entry level biologist resume example
Seasonal and entry level postings are filled by people who already know the protocols. Put the methods in the first bullet, not the last.

Entry level: seasonal wildlife technician applying for a biological technician job (181 words)
JORDAN ELLIS Missoula, MT | jordan.ellis@email.com | (406) 555-0142
SUMMARY Wildlife biology graduate with two field seasons on small mammal and songbird surveys. Experienced with live trapping, mist netting, point counts and data entry in ArcGIS Field Maps. Holds a wilderness first aid certificate and a clean driving record for 4x4 vehicles.

FIELD EXPERIENCE Biological Technician (seasonal), Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, May to Sept 2025 Ran live trapping grids for small mammals across 12 plots, following the agency's handling protocol Conducted point counts on 30 survey routes before 9 a.m. and entered every record the same day Flagged 14 data entry errors in the shared season dataset before the end of season analysis

Notice what the summary does not say: "passionate about nature." Everyone applying to a wildlife job is passionate about nature. The trap grid count is what proves it.
Lab biologist resume example
Lab hiring managers scan for techniques and instruments first. If you ran qPCR, write qPCR. If you kept a cell line alive through a holiday weekend, that is worth a line too.

Early career: lab biologist moving from academic lab to biotech (156 words)

What hiring scientists look for on a biologist resume
The work itself is varied. O*NET's profile of zoologists and wildlife biologists says they "Study the origins, behavior, diseases, genetics, and life processes of animals and wildlife." Its microbiologist profile describes people who "Investigate the growth, structure, development, and other characteristics of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, algae, or fungi." Your resume should make it obvious which of those worlds you live in within the first three lines.
Four things get read first:
- Organisms and systems. Songbirds, salmonids, wetland plants, E. coli, zebrafish. Name them.
- Methods. Trapping, telemetry, electrofishing, qPCR, CRISPR, flow cytometry, GIS, R. A method list without context is weak, so tie each one to a bullet.
- Data. How many plots, samples, individuals or sequences, and what the data fed into: a management plan, a permit decision, a paper.
- Permits, certifications and safety. Bander permits, boat operator cards, wilderness first aid, biosafety training. Only the ones you actually hold.

Federal biologist resume example
Federal biology jobs run on the General Schedule, and the qualification standard for the 0401 series is blunt. OPM lists the basic requirement as a "Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position." It also accepts a "Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education." Federal resumes are longer than private sector ones and include hours per week and exact dates for each job, so read our federal resume example before you trim anything.

Career changer biologist resume example
Moving from teaching, consulting or a lab into field biology, or the other way, works when your bullets prove the transferable method rather than the old job title.

How to write each section of a biologist resume
Summary. Two or three lines: your specialty, your strongest methods and one proof. "Fisheries biologist who leads electrofishing crews and writes the survey report" beats "dedicated professional with a love of science."
Education. Degree, school, year, and the courses the posting names. Put it above experience until you have three or more years of paid work. List your thesis title if it matches the job.
Experience. Lead with a verb and a method, then the scale, then what happened to the data. Seasonal jobs count; give them their own entries with dates.
Skills. Group them: field methods, lab methods, software, certifications. Keep it honest; a hiring biologist will ask you about any technique you list.
Publications and presentations. For research jobs, list them. For field technician jobs, one line is enough.
Many biologists move between resume and academic CV. If an employer asks for a CV, our guide on CV vs resume explains what changes. For marine roles, compare with our marine biologist resume page, and for lab work our microbiologist resume examples.
Mistakes that sink a biologist resume
- Listing twenty techniques with no bullet that shows you used any of them.
- Hiding seasonal field jobs because they were short. They are the experience.
- Leaving out sample sizes and plot counts, which are exactly what a field lead wants to know.
- Sending a two page academic CV to a private consulting firm that asked for a one page resume.
- Calling yourself an expert in a method you used once in a class lab.
Frequently asked questions
What should a biologist put on a resume?
Put your specialty, degree and relevant coursework, then every field or lab job with the organisms, methods and sample sizes you handled. Add permits, certifications and software you use. Finish with publications if the job is research based. Hiring scientists read methods and data first, so lead each bullet with them.
How long should a biologist resume be?
One page for entry level and most private sector jobs, two pages once you have several years of field or lab work. Federal applications are longer because they ask for hours per week and full dates. Research positions often ask for an academic CV instead, which lists every publication and grant.
Should I list seasonal field jobs on a biologist resume?
Yes. Seasonal technician jobs are how most field biologists start, and hiring managers expect to see them. Give each season its own entry with dates, the agency or employer, and the surveys you ran. Two short seasons with clear methods beat one vague long job.
What skills belong on a biologist resume?
Group them into field methods, lab methods, data and software, and certifications. Examples include trapping, telemetry, electrofishing, qPCR, cell culture, R, ArcGIS and wilderness first aid. Only list what you could explain in an interview, and tie your strongest skills to a bullet in your experience section.
