Highest Paying Jobs in Fashion: 8 Salaries and CV Lines

The highest paying jobs in fashion are not design jobs. In September 2026 the money sits in the commercial functions that decide what gets made and how it sells, and the O*NET median for marketing managers is $166,790 a year against $80,960 for fashion designers. That gap is the single most useful fact in this article, because it tells a design graduate which internal move doubles their pay. Every figure below is the 2025 median published on that occupation's own O*NET page, read on 12 September 2026, quoted with its occupation code. Each job then gets the CV line that gets the interview. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
The line that gets a fashion CV read
Fashion hiring runs on numbers that most creative CVs leave out: units, margin, sell-through, doors. One block fixes it.

The commercial block every fashion CV should carry, mid-career (42 words)
COMMERCIAL RESULTS
Owned a $4.2m wholesale womenswear book across 38 doors. Grew sell-through from 61 to 74 percent over four seasons by cutting the range from 120 styles to 78, and held gross margin at 58 percent through two cotton price rises.
The eight jobs, ranked by published median
| Job | O*NET code | Median wage, 2025 | What it decides in a fashion business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketing manager | 11-2021.00 | $166,790 a year, $80.19 an hour | The brand, the campaign calendar and the spend |
| Sales manager | 11-2022.00 | $148,270 a year, $71.28 an hour | Wholesale and retail targets by territory |
| Purchasing manager | 11-3061.00 | $148,080 a year, $71.19 an hour | Supplier selection, cost and terms |
| Public relations manager | 11-2032.00 | $146,910 a year, $70.63 an hour | Press, celebrity seeding and crisis response |
| Art director | 27-1011.00 | $114,850 a year, $55.22 an hour | Campaign imagery, lookbooks and brand visuals |
| Commercial and industrial designer | 27-1021.00 | $83,910 a year, $40.34 an hour | Footwear, bags and hard accessories |
| Logistician | 13-1081.00 | $82,320 a year, $39.58 an hour | Inbound freight, allocation and lead times |
| Fashion designer | 27-1022.00 | $80,960 a year, $38.92 an hour | The range, the fabric and the fit |
Wholesale and retail buyers sit just below at $77,710 a year, which surprises people, because the buyer role is the most coveted job in the industry. The pay premium belongs to the manager who sets the buyer's budget, not to the buyer.
Marketing manager: the highest paid seat in the building
At $166,790 the marketing manager occupation page records the top median here, and O*NET places it in Job Zone Four, where "Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not". In fashion this is the brand lead: calendar, budget, campaign and the argument with design about what the season is called.
The CV has to show spend owned and a measured result, not campaigns attended.

Fashion marketing manager, CV experience section, from brand coordinator (90 words)
Brand Manager, Marchetta Denim, Los Angeles. March 2023 to present
- Own a $2.1m annual marketing budget across paid social, influencer and print, reallocated mid-2025 to shift 40 percent into retention. - Ran four seasonal campaigns a year with a 7-person cross-functional team, each briefed 14 weeks before launch. - Grew direct-to-consumer revenue from $6.4m to $9.8m over two years, with returning customer share up from 22 to 34 percent. - Rebuilt the email program from 9 to 26 automated flows, lifting email revenue share from 11 to 19 percent.
Sales manager and purchasing manager: the two commercial ladders
Both clear $148,000. The sales manager page records $148,270 and the purchasing manager page records $148,080, and both sit in Job Zone Four. In apparel these are the wholesale director and the sourcing or production lead, and both are reachable from an account coordinator or assistant merchandiser seat without a further degree.
Sales managers are hired on the book they carry. Purchasing managers are hired on cost saved and on-time delivery.

Wholesale sales manager, CV block with the account book (84 words)
Wholesale Account Manager, Perrin Knitwear, New York. 2022 to present

Public relations manager: the job the press list pays for
The public relations manager page records $146,910 a year, third highest here. In fashion the role is press, gifting, celebrity seeding and the response when something goes wrong on a Friday night.
Publicity CVs are read for placements and relationships, both countable.

Fashion PR manager, CV results block (83 words)
Senior Publicist, Aveline Studio, New York. 2022 to present
- Secured 214 print and digital placements in 2025, including 9 in tier-one titles and 3 covers. - Manage a press and stylist list of 640 contacts, refreshed quarterly, with 48 percent opening the seasonal mailer. - Ran seeding for two collection launches, placing product with 31 talent and converting 14 into organic posts. - Wrote and held the crisis statement used during the 2025 supply chain story, with coverage closed inside 72 hours.
Art director: the best paid creative job in fashion
The art director page records $114,850 a year, which is $33,890 above the fashion designer median. It is the creative route that pays, and it is reachable from graphic design, photography or styling.
An art director's CV is a shoot list with budgets attached.

Art director, CV portfolio and production block (74 words)
Art Director, Solenne, Brooklyn. 2023 to present
- Direct 8 campaign and 12 e-commerce shoots a year, with per-shoot budgets from $18,000 to $140,000. - Built the brand's visual guidelines, 42 pages, now used by three external agencies. - Reduced e-commerce production cost per style from $61 to $38 by moving to in-house studio days. - Brief and manage photographers, stylists, casting and retouch, a crew of 9 to 22 depending on the shoot.
Designers and logisticians: the two jobs the industry is built on
The fashion designer page records $80,960 a year and describes the work as "Design clothing and accessories. Create original designs or adapt fashion trends." It sits in Job Zone Three, the only job on this list that does. The commercial and industrial designer page records $83,910, which is why footwear and accessory designers out-earn apparel designers. The logistician page records $82,320 for the person who gets the product to the door on time.
Designers get hired on a portfolio with commercial evidence attached, not on mood boards.

Fashion designer, CV range and sell-through block, three years in (86 words)
Designer, Womenswear, Nella Cortez, Los Angeles. 2023 to present
- Design two main collections and two drops a year, 78 styles a season, from sketch through fit to handover. - My three bestselling styles have repeated for five consecutive seasons and hold 19 percent of division revenue. - Cut sampling rounds from 4 to 2.4 on average by tightening tech packs, saving roughly $31,000 a year. - Work in Adobe Illustrator, CLO 3D and PLM (Centric), and run fit sessions with the technical designer weekly.

Allocation and Logistics Analyst, Meridian Brands, New Jersey. 2022 to present
- Allocate 1.4m units a year across 62 doors and the e-commerce pool, rebalancing weekly on sell-through. - Cut inbound air freight share from 18 to 6 percent by moving four programs to a 12-week ocean booking. - Hold 96 percent on-time in-full to the majors, measured on their own vendor scorecards. - Run the annual physical inventory for a 240,000 square foot facility, with a 0.3 percent shrink result.
How the pay numbers were checked
- Every figure is the "Median wages (2025)" value printed on that occupation's own O*NET OnLine summary page, read on 12 September 2026. Both the hourly and the annual median are given where O*NET publishes both.
- Occupation codes are in the table so you can open the same page and see the same number. O*NET OnLine is sponsored by the US Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.
- O*NET has no occupation called creative director, buying director or trend forecaster. Those titles sit inside the codes above, which is why this list uses the occupation rather than the industry job title. Pay in a specific fashion house will differ from a national median in both directions.
- Job Zone is O*NET's own preparation rating, quoted from each page. Seven of the eight sit in Job Zone Four, where "Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not".
Three moves that raise a fashion salary
- Move sideways into the commercial function. A designer on the $80,960 median who becomes a marketing or sales manager is moving to a median above $148,000 in the same industry.
- Learn the accessory and footwear side. The commercial and industrial designer median beats the apparel designer median by $2,950, and the category is smaller.
- Put margin on the CV. Every example above names a cost, a percentage of revenue or a sell-through figure, because those are the only claims a fashion employer can check in an interview.

Frequently asked questions
What is the highest paying jobs without a degree?
Not a fashion job. Across all US occupations the highest medians with no degree requirement are safety-critical operating roles, topped by air traffic control at $148,080 on O*NET. Within fashion, only the designer seat sits in a job zone below a bachelor's degree, and its median is $80,960.
What is the highest paying entry level job?
In fashion, none of the eight above is entry level. The realistic first rungs are assistant merchandiser, account coordinator, allocation analyst and design assistant, and each feeds one of the eight. The fastest paid of those is allocation, because it leads to the logistician median of $82,320.
What are the highest paying entry level jobs?
Judge an entry seat by what it feeds rather than by its own salary. A wholesale account coordinator feeds the sales manager median of $148,270. A sourcing assistant feeds the purchasing manager median of $148,080. A design assistant feeds $80,960, which is the whole argument of this article.
What the highest paying job without a degree?
Across the economy it is air traffic control, at a 2025 median of $148,080 on O*NET occupation 53-2021.00. In fashion, the closest thing to a no-degree route is design, which O*NET places in Job Zone Three, and buying, where a portfolio of open-to-buy experience matters more than a diploma.
What are the highest paying certificate programs?
For fashion, the certificates that move pay are commercial rather than creative: merchandise planning, PLM systems such as Centric, CLO 3D for digital sampling, and supply chain credentials. None of them appears in an O*NET wage table, so judge one only by whether the adverts you want name it.
What are the highest paying jobs in new york city?
Look the exact occupation up by state rather than trusting a citywide list. O*NET publishes a state wage selector on every occupation page, and the Department of Labor's salary finder on CareerOneStop does the same by location, which is the honest way to price a New York offer.
