Less Stress Jobs That Pay Well in the UK: 8 With CV Lines

Less stress jobs that pay well are, in the UK in September 2026, almost entirely rule-bound desk jobs with a professional body behind them. The number to beat is the Office for National Statistics figure for April 2025: "Median gross annual earnings for full-time employees were £39,039 in April 2025", against £37,439 a year earlier. The eight jobs below clear it at the experienced end, and the government's own job profiles record a typical week of 37 to 42 hours for every one of them. Each salary band and each hours figure is quoted from that job's National Careers Service profile, with the CV line that gets you an interview for it. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Predictable is the honest word, not easy. What these eight share is a defined scope, a published standard to work inside, and no rota.

The eight jobs, what they pay and the week they ask for
Every row is quoted from the job's own National Careers Service profile, read on 12 September 2026.

| Network engineer | £25,500 to £52,000 | 38 to 40, on call | University, college, apprenticeship, working towards it |
Health and safety adviser is the near miss at £26,000 to £48,000 on a 37 to 40 hour week. Information scientist at £21,000 to £45,000 and cartographer at £24,000 to £45,000 both stop short.
Company secretary: the widest band on the list
A company secretary keeps a board legal, and the profile puts the experienced figure at £95,000, the highest here. Entry is unusually open: the profile lists a university course, a college course, an apprenticeship, or "training with a professional body", and asks for "relevant business experience in areas like" pensions or insurance, personnel, accounts and credit control, purchasing, or office management.
That list is a gift to anyone already in an administrative seat.

Assistant company secretary, CV experience section, from office management (95 words)
Office Manager, Trenholm Group, Reading. April 2022 to present
- Ran the board pack for a 6-director company for 14 quarters: agenda, papers circulated seven days ahead, and minutes signed off within five working days every time. - Filed all Companies House returns in-house, including 3 changes of director and 2 allotments of shares, with no late filing penalty in four years. - Kept the statutory registers and the PSC register, reconciled against Companies House twice a year. - Studying for the CGI Level 4 Certificate in Governance and Compliance, three of four modules passed.
Data scientist and economist: the two analytical ladders
Both reach the sixties or above, both keep office hours, and both list an apprenticeship. The data scientist profile records a 37 to 39 hour week with flexible working, and its university route expects "a relevant degree or postgraduate qualification" in maths, statistics, data science, computer science or operational research. The economist profile wants "a degree in economics or a related subject".
Career changers get in on evidence of applied statistics, not on the title they held.

UX designer: the creative seat with office hours
The UX designer profile records £32,000 starter to £65,000 experienced on a 37 to 39 hour week, and names four entry routes including a college course and applying directly. A portfolio does the work a degree would do elsewhere.

Database administrator and network engineer: the two on-call jobs
Both profiles say "on call", which is the honest caveat on this list. In exchange, the database administrator band runs to £62,000 and the network engineer band to £52,000, and both list a college course and an apprenticeship as entry routes alongside a degree.
If you are moving from a support desk, the CV needs uptime numbers and a change record.

On the on-call rota one week in four for 18 months.
Tax inspector and tax adviser: the two that pay you to qualify
The tax inspector route is a single door: the profile says you apply directly and need "a degree in any subject, minimum second class" or "an equivalent award like a professional accountancy qualification" for the HMRC Tax Specialist Programme. Tax adviser is the more open of the pair, with an apprenticeship and a "working towards this role" route, and a band of £25,000 to £55,000.
Both screen for patience with detail. The profile for tax inspector even lists "patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations" among the skills needed.

Tax inspector, HMRC Tax Specialist Programme application, CV opening (82 words)
PROFILE
Applying to the HMRC Tax Specialist Programme. BSc Accounting and Finance (Nottingham Trent, 2:1, 2026), and two years of part-time bookkeeping alongside the degree.
EVIDENCE
- Kept the books and VAT returns for four sole traders across 24 months, 96 returns filed, none late. - Traced and corrected an inherited suspense balance of £7,800 across 43 transactions for one client. - Finance society treasurer for a year: £11,400 of income and spend, audited by the students' union with no findings.
How the pay numbers were checked
- The benchmark is the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings for April 2025, which reports median gross annual earnings of £39,039 for full-time employees and median weekly earnings of £766.60.
- Every band is the "Average salary (a year)" figure printed on that job's own National Careers Service profile, copied starter to experienced without adjustment, on 12 September 2026.
- Hours come from the same profiles' "Typical hours (a week)" field, which is why two of the eight carry an honest "on call" note rather than a claim of nine to five.
- Stress itself is not in any salary table. It has a legal framework instead: the HSE Management Standards cover demands, control, support, relationships, role and change, and an employer's risk assessment against those six is a fairer question to ask at interview than "is this job stressful".
None of it measures variance between employers. A database administrator in a 14-instance college and one in a 24-hour payments business share a band and nothing else.
Three moves that waste the application
- Applying at the top of a band without the qualification the band assumes. Company secretaries reach £95,000 after chartered status, not before.
- Writing that you want less stress. Say predictable hours, defined scope, or process-driven work.
- Leaving the professional body off the page. An ATT paper number, a CCNA date or a CGI module count is the fastest credibility available to you.

Frequently asked questions
What is a great job that pays well?
In UK terms, one paying above the ONS median of £39,039 a year without a rota. On this list the company secretary band reaches £95,000 and the data scientist band £83,000, both on a 37 to 39 hour week recorded by the National Careers Service.
What a good job that pays well?
Judge it on three published facts rather than a feeling: the salary band, the typical weekly hours, and whether a professional body sets the standard. All eight jobs above publish all three, which is why they can be compared at all.
What is a good career that pays well?
One where the qualification is examined by a body rather than granted by a university, because that keeps the entry cost low. Tax, governance, networking and database work all qualify: ATT, CGI, Cisco and Microsoft all examine candidates directly and publish their syllabuses.
What are jobs that pay alot?
At the experienced end of this list, company secretary at £95,000, data scientist at £83,000 and UX designer at £65,000. All three are recorded by the National Careers Service on a 37 to 39 hour week, and all three list an apprenticeship among their entry routes.
What are good careers that pay well?
Careers with a published ladder. Tax runs apprentice to ATT to CTA, networking runs CCNA upwards, governance runs the CGI certificate to chartered status. Each rung has a pay band attached, so you can see the next number before you commit to the study.
What are some good jobs that pay well?
Eight are listed above with their sources. If none fit, use the same method on any other job: open its National Careers Service profile, read the salary band and the typical hours together, and discard anything whose hours field mentions shifts you do not want.
