CNA Job Description for Resume: Duties by Care Setting

A CNA job description for a resume is the set of patient care duties you actually performed, written as bullets that name the task, the number of residents or patients and the setting: help with daily living, vital signs, transfers, intake and output, repositioning and reporting changes to the nurse. The one constraint is scope, because O*NET's nursing assistant profile defines the job as care given "under the direction of onsite licensed nursing staff", so write duties you did under that direction. Below are duties grouped by setting and six complete CNA experience sections, new aide to senior CNA. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Most CNA resumes say "assisted residents with ADLs." That one line covers bathing, dressing, feeding and walking a whole hallway to breakfast before the day shift has had coffee. It is a day's work written as a footnote.

A CNA experience section that reads like the job

Here is a nursing home CNA with two years on the floor. Every bullet names a duty, a number and who it was reported to.

Complete Mid level: CNA, long-term care, two years example, 108 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

The CNA duties a resume should cover

O*NET's task list for nursing assistants is the cleanest checklist there is. A few of its lines, quoted as written:

Group your own duties the same way, then keep only what you did:

CNA duties by setting

The job changes with the building, so use the setting's own words.

Example 2: New CNA, first job after certification

A new CNA has clinical hours, not employer history. Federal rules require state-approved nurse aide programs to include "no less than 75 clock hours of training", according to 42 CFR 483.152, and your own program may require more. List your hours and the clinical site.

Entry level: newly certified CNA, clinical training only, complete example, 108 words

Example 4: Home health CNA

Home health resumes show independence: visits per day, travel and what you report back.

Example 5: Rehab CNA

In rehab, your care follows the therapy plan, so link it to the patient's progress.

How to turn a CNA duty into a resume bullet

Each bullet answers three questions: what you did, for how many and where.

Federal nursing home rules put competence at the center. Under 42 CFR 483.35, "The facility must ensure that nurse aides are able to demonstrate competency in skills and techniques necessary to care for residents' needs, as identified through resident assessments, and described in the plan of care." So name the skills: mechanical lifts, dementia care, catheter care where allowed, and the charting system.

Leave off duties outside your state's CNA scope. The Bureau of Labor Statistics nursing assistants profile is a good check on what the job usually includes.

Frequently asked questions

What should a CNA job description include on a resume?

Include personal care, vital signs, transfers and mobility, intake and output, observation and reporting to the nurse, and charting. Add the number of residents or patients you cared for, the setting and the system you charted in. Keep only the duties you performed, and write each one as a short bullet with a number.

How do I list CNA duties if I only have clinical hours?

Put your certification first, then a Clinical Training entry with the facility name, city and dates. List the duties you performed under your instructor, such as morning care, vital signs and transfers, and the number of residents. Add the program's total hours, and keep earlier jobs below to show reliability.

Should CNA duties change for a hospital resume?

Yes. Hospital readers look for patient counts per shift, unit type, vital sign frequency, specimen collection, isolation precautions and the electronic health record. Nursing home duties still count, but rewrite them in acute care terms such as post-op mobility and admission vitals when the posting uses those words.

What CNA responsibilities should I leave off a resume?

Leave off anything outside your certification or state scope, such as giving medications where your state does not allow it, and duties you only observed during training. Also cut vague lines such as "other duties as assigned." Every bullet should be something you could explain step by step in the interview.

Is a CNA job description the same as a CNA resume summary?

No. The summary is two or three lines at the top saying who you are and what you offer. The job description is the bullet list under each job. A good summary takes the two strongest duties from below and puts them in one sentence.
