Medical Assistant Duties for Resume: Bullets by Setting

Medical assistant duties for a resume are the clinical and administrative tasks you actually did, written as bullets that name the task, the volume and the system: rooming and vitals, injections, specimen collection, scheduling, prior authorizations and records. The constraint is that every clinic uses medical assistants differently. The Bureau of Labor Statistics medical assistant profile says their "duties vary by location, specialty, and employer," so a duty list copied from a job posting rarely matches what you did. Below are the duty groups, how to turn each into a resume bullet, and six complete job entries by setting. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Most medical assistant resumes say "assisted the physician with various duties". Somewhere a physician is still wondering which ones.
The two groups of medical assistant duties
O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, sums up the medical assistant job as: "Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician." Split your bullets the same way.
Clinical (back office) duties:
- Rooming patients, taking vital signs, height and weight, and recording history and medication lists
- Preparing exam and procedure rooms, setting up trays and assisting with minor procedures
- Giving injections and immunizations, and administering medications as directed
- Venipuncture, capillary sticks, urine and swab collection, and point of care tests
- EKGs, spirometry, vision and hearing screens
- Cleaning and sterilizing instruments and handling biohazard waste
- Patient education on medications, diets and follow up instructions
Administrative (front office) duties:
- Scheduling appointments, check in and check out, and insurance verification
- Prior authorizations, referrals and prescription refill requests
- Updating the electronic health record and scanning outside records
- Answering phones and the patient portal, and routing messages to providers
- Collecting copays, basic billing and coding support

Entry level: new graduate, family medicine externship (113 words)
Medical Assistant Extern | Family medicine practice, four providers | Columbus, OH | Feb 2026 to Apr 2026 - Roomed up to 18 patients a day under supervision, recording vitals, chief complaint, history and medication lists in eClinicalWorks before the provider entered - Performed supervised venipuncture and capillary draws on adult and pediatric patients, labeled specimens and logged them for the outside lab - Gave intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, including seasonal flu vaccines, and documented lot numbers in the vaccine log - Ran 12 lead EKGs and urine dipsticks, and cleaned and restocked four exam rooms between patients - Completed 180 externship hours with sign-off on every clinical competency in the program checklist
How to turn a duty into a resume bullet
A duty is what the job description says you do. A bullet is proof that you did it well. Take each duty and add one of three things: how many, how fast or what improved.
- Duty: "Take vital signs." Bullet: "Roomed and took vitals for 25 to 30 patients a day in a busy pediatric clinic."
- Duty: "Schedule appointments." Bullet: "Managed the schedule for three providers and cut same day gaps by calling the cancellation list each morning."
- Duty: "Collect specimens." Bullet: "Performed about 20 blood draws a day with first stick success that the lab supervisor singled out at review."
The CareerOneStop resume guide, run by the US Department of Labor, tells you to show the minimum qualifications first and to "use terms that match their job posting." If the posting says rooming, write rooming. If it says EHR and names the system, name it.

Entry level: front office medical assistant, multi specialty clinic (102 words)
Front Office Medical Assistant | Multi specialty clinic, 12 providers | Dayton, OH | 2024 to present - Check in and check out up to 70 patients a day, verifying insurance eligibility and collecting copays - Submit 15 to 20 prior authorizations a week for imaging and specialty medications, following up until each is approved or denied - Schedule for cardiology and endocrinology, including new patient intake packets and referral tracking - Route patient portal messages and refill requests to the right provider within one business day - Scan and index outside records into Epic so charts are complete before each visit
Medical assistant duties by setting
The setting changes which duties lead. A pediatric resume leads with vaccines and growth charts. A dermatology resume leads with procedures. An urgent care resume leads with speed and range.

Mid level: clinical medical assistant in pediatrics (103 words)
Clinical Medical Assistant | Pediatric practice, five providers | Louisville, KY | 2022 to present - Room 25 to 30 patients a day, measuring vitals, growth charts, and vision and hearing screens at well child visits - Give childhood immunizations to the CDC schedule, record lot numbers in the state registry and counsel parents on aftercare - Collect throat swabs and run rapid strep and flu tests, sending send-out cultures with complete paperwork - Keep the vaccine refrigerator log twice a day and rotate stock so nothing expires on the shelf - Train new medical assistants on rooming flow and the immunization registry

Mid level: medical assistant in dermatology (92 words)

Mid level: medical assistant in urgent care (94 words)

Duties for a lead medical assistant resume
A lead or senior medical assistant still does the clinical work, but the bullets that win the job are about the clinic running well: training, schedules, supply and compliance.

Senior: lead medical assistant in a primary care clinic (92 words)
Lead Medical Assistant | Primary care clinic, eight providers | Raleigh, NC | 2019 to present - Lead a team of nine medical assistants, building the daily rooming schedule and covering gaps - Train and check off every new hire on clinical competencies, including injections, EKG and phlebotomy - Order clinical supplies and vaccines on a monthly budget and track usage by room - Prepare the clinic for annual compliance reviews, including logs, expiry checks and OSHA training records - Room patients for two providers on busy days, keeping clinical skills current
Duties to leave off a medical assistant resume
- Anything you were not trained or allowed to do. Scope of practice varies by state, and an interviewer will ask.
- Duties every applicant has, such as "answered phones", unless you can add volume.
- Long copied lists from the posting with no numbers. They look identical to everyone else's.
- Tasks from a job before you trained as an MA, unless they show patient contact or front desk skills.
The BLS profile also notes that "Medical assistants typically need postsecondary education, such as a certificate," so put your program and your certification, such as CMA, RMA or CCMA, right under your name or summary. Frequently asked questions
What are the duties of a medical assistant for a resume?
Clinical duties such as rooming patients, vital signs, injections, blood draws, EKGs and assisting with procedures, and administrative duties such as scheduling, insurance verification, prior authorizations and EHR updates. Only list the ones you did, and add volume or results to each so the bullet shows how well you did it.
How do I describe medical assistant duties on a resume?
Start each bullet with a verb, name the task, then add a number or a system. For example: "Roomed 25 to 30 patients a day, recording vitals and medication lists in Epic." Use the wording of the posting for skills you have, and group clinical and administrative duties under the same job.
What should a medical assistant put on a resume with no experience?
Your externship, written like a job: the setting, the number of patients you roomed, the procedures you performed under supervision and the total hours. Add your program, your certification or exam date, and any earlier job with patient or customer contact, such as pharmacy or retail work.
Should I list clinical or administrative duties first?
Lead with whichever the posting stresses. A back office or clinical posting wants rooming, injections and phlebotomy first. A front office posting wants scheduling, insurance and the EHR first. If the job is both, start with clinical duties, then add two administrative bullets.
How many duty bullets should each medical assistant job have?
Four to six for your current or most recent job and two to four for older ones. Choose the duties that match the posting and cut the ones every medical assistant does. Six strong bullets with numbers beat twelve copied from a job description.
