CNA Objectives for Resume: 6 Samples for Every Situation

A good CNA objective for a resume is two sentences: the first names your certification, your state and the setting you want, and the second names the patient care you can already do and the shifts you can cover. That is it. A director of nursing reading a stack of nursing assistant applications wants to know three things fast: are you certified or about to be, can you do the basic care, and can you work the hours the unit needs. The O*NET profile for nursing assistants lists "Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)" among the job titles and opens the task list with "Turn or reposition bedridden patients." Below are six complete CNA objectives for a resume, each with the lines that sit under it, checked against O*NET and federal training rules in October 2026. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, a qualified care worker who has hired care staff and been hired as one.
Newly certified CNA objective
If you just passed your state exam, the objective carries the whole top of the page because you have no job history yet. Name the certificate, the clinical hours and the facility where you trained. Federal rules for nurse aide training programs, in 42 CFR 483.152, require a program to "Consist of no less than 75 clock hours of training" and to include "at least 16 hours of supervised practical training." Your clinical rotation is real experience. Say where it was.

Entry level: newly certified CNA applying to a skilled nursing facility (81 words)
OBJECTIVE Certified Nursing Assistant, listed on the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry since September 2026, seeking a day or evening position at Maple Grove Care Center. Completed clinical training on a 40 bed long term care unit, where I gave bed baths, fed residents, took vital signs and recorded intake and output under RN supervision.
CERTIFICATIONS State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA), Ohio, 2026 BLS for Healthcare Providers, American Heart Association, 2026
CLINICAL TRAINING Long term care rotation, Riverside Health Campus, 2026
CNA objective for a nursing student
Nursing students often work as CNAs to pay for school and to get floor time before their RN or LPN program finishes. Hiring managers like this because you stay longer and learn faster, but they worry about your class schedule. Answer that worry in the objective. For more on building the rest of a first resume, our guide to a CNA resume with no experience has six full samples.

Entry level: second year nursing student applying for part-time CNA work (77 words)
OBJECTIVE Certified Nursing Assistant and second year ADN student at Lakeshore Community College seeking a part-time CNA position on a medical surgical floor. Available every weekend and two weekday evenings, with fixed class days that do not change during the semester. Brings clinical rotations in long term care and medical surgical nursing.
CERTIFICATIONS Certified Nursing Assistant, Illinois Health Care Worker Registry, 2025 BLS for Healthcare Providers, 2025
EDUCATION Associate Degree in Nursing, Lakeshore Community College, expected 2027
CNA objective for a career changer
Coming from retail, food service or a call center? The skills that move across are patience with upset people, working on your feet for a full shift and following a procedure every time. Do not list them as abstract traits. Tie each one to a care task, like keeping calm with a confused resident at the call light, which O*NET describes as "Answer patient call signals, signal lights, bells, or intercom systems to determine patients' needs."

Entry level: retail shift lead moving into a first CNA job (82 words)
OBJECTIVE Newly certified nursing assistant with six years in retail, including three as a shift lead, seeking a CNA position in assisted living. Used to twelve hour days on my feet, handling upset customers calmly and following opening and closing checklists exactly. Completed clinical training in memory care and want to work evenings or nights.
CERTIFICATIONS Certified Nursing Assistant, Texas Nurse Aide Registry, 2026 CPR and First Aid, American Red Cross, 2026
EXPERIENCE Shift Lead, Hometown Grocery, Austin, TX, 2020 to 2026
CNA objective for a hospital job
Hospitals often call the role patient care technician or patient care assistant, and they ask for more than a long term care building does: vital signs on a schedule, glucose checks in some states, and fast documentation in the electronic record. If you have nursing home years, the objective should show you can keep up with a faster unit. Use the hospital's own job title.

Mid level: nursing home CNA applying for a hospital patient care technician role (83 words)
OBJECTIVE Certified Nursing Assistant with four years in a 120 bed skilled nursing facility, seeking a Patient Care Technician position on the telemetry unit at St. Vincent Medical Center. Care for up to 12 residents per shift, take and chart vital signs in PointClickCare, and report changes in condition to the charge nurse the same hour.
CERTIFICATIONS Certified Nursing Assistant, Indiana Nurse Aide Registry, 2022 BLS for Healthcare Providers, 2026
EXPERIENCE Certified Nursing Assistant, Brookside Rehabilitation and Nursing, Indianapolis, IN, 2022 to present
CNA objective for home health
Home health aides work alone in a client's house, so the objective must show you can be trusted without a nurse down the hall. Mention your driving record, your experience with one client at a time and the reporting you do. O*NET lists this exact duty: "Document or otherwise report observations of patient behavior, complaints, or physical symptoms to nurses."

Mid level: facility CNA moving into home health (78 words)
OBJECTIVE Certified Nursing Assistant with three years in assisted living, seeking a home health aide position with Caring Hands Home Care in the Tampa area. Comfortable working alone with one client at a time, helping with bathing, dressing, meals and transfers, and calling the case nurse the same day with any change I notice.
CERTIFICATIONS Certified Nursing Assistant, Florida Board of Nursing, 2023 Home Health Aide training, 2026
DRIVING Valid Florida driver license, clean record, own reliable car
Senior CNA objective
After five or more years, an objective is optional because your experience speaks first. Most experienced CNAs should switch to a summary, which our guide on resume summary vs objective explains. Keep an objective only if you are aiming at a new role, such as restorative aide, CNA preceptor or a step toward LPN.

Senior level: experienced CNA applying for a restorative aide and preceptor role (84 words)
OBJECTIVE Certified Nursing Assistant with nine years in long term care seeking the Restorative Nursing Assistant and new hire preceptor position at Oak Hollow Health Center. Train new aides on transfers, Hoyer lift safety and charting, and run range of motion and walking programs for residents on my hall under the therapy plan.
CERTIFICATIONS Certified Nursing Assistant, Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Registry, 2017 Restorative Nursing Assistant certificate, 2024 BLS for Healthcare Providers, 2026
EXPERIENCE Lead Certified Nursing Assistant, Oak Hollow Health Center, 2019 to present
How to write a CNA objective for your resume
Use this four part formula and you will not need a template:
- Who you are: certified nursing assistant, plus your registry state, or CNA candidate with your exam date.
- What you want: the exact job title from the posting and the facility name.
- What you can do: two or three real care tasks, the kind O*NET lists, such as "Feed patients or assist patients to eat or drink."
- When you can work: days, evenings, nights, weekends or per diem.
Keep it to two sentences and 40 to 60 words. Change the facility name and title for every application. A generic objective about wanting a challenging role where you can grow tells the reader nothing, and every other applicant wrote the same line. For more phrasing across other jobs, see our resume objective examples.
Where the objective goes on a CNA resume
Put the objective right under your name and contact line. Next comes certifications, because in nursing homes and hospitals the registry listing is checked before anything else. Then experience or clinical training, skills and education. CareerOneStop, the US Department of Labor's career site, gives the length rule: "Keep the resume to 1-2 pages." For a CNA, one page is right in almost every case.
Our certified nursing assistant resume page shows a full layout with bullets, and the CNA cover letter page shows the letter that goes with it. If you are thinking about the next step, our nursing resume guide covers RN and LPN applications.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good objective for a CNA resume?
Two sentences that name your certification and state, the job title and facility you want, two or three care tasks you can already do, and the shifts you can work. For example: Certified Nursing Assistant on the Ohio registry seeking a day shift position at Maple Grove, trained in bathing, feeding and vital signs.
Should a CNA resume have an objective or a summary?
New CNAs, students and career changers should use an objective, because it explains where you are headed when the job history is thin. CNAs with several years of care work should use a summary that leads with years, setting and caseload. If you are switching settings, an objective still works at any level.
How long should a CNA resume objective be?
Two sentences, about 40 to 60 words. Longer than that and it turns into a cover letter. Every word should be a fact the hiring nurse can check: your certification, the setting, the tasks and your availability. Cut adjectives like hardworking and passionate, and show those through the tasks you name.
What should I put on a CNA resume with no experience?
Your certificate and registry listing, your clinical training with the facility name, BLS or CPR, and any work where you cared for people or worked long shifts. The first objective on this page is a complete example for a newly certified aide. Add your availability, because many CNA jobs are filled by who can cover the open shifts.
Do I need to list my CNA certification number on my resume?
You do not need to. Listing the state and the registry name is enough, because the employer will verify you on the state registry anyway. Some applicants add the number to save the employer a step. Never list a certificate you have not earned yet as if it were active; write exam scheduled with the date.
