LPN Duties for Resume: Responsibilities by Setting

LPN duties for a resume are the nursing tasks you actually performed, written as bullets that name the task, the patient load and the setting: medication passes, vital signs, wound care, charting, and reporting changes to the registered nurse. The constraint is your state. The Bureau of Labor Statistics LPN and LVN profile says "LPN and LVN duties also may depend on the state in which they work," so a duty list copied from another state's posting can claim things you were never allowed to do. Below are the duty groups, how to turn each one into a bullet, and five complete job entries by setting. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Most LPN resumes say "provided patient care as needed." Every patient in the building needed it, which is rather the point of the building.
The LPN responsibilities a resume should cover
O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, describes the licensed practical nurse job in two sentences: "Care for ill, injured, or convalescing patients or persons with disabilities in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, private homes, group homes, and similar institutions. May work under the supervision of a registered nurse." Your duties fall into four groups. Use them as a checklist, then keep only what you did.
Medication and treatments:
- Medication passes, including oral, topical, injectable and, where your state and employer allow it, IV medications
- Wound care, dressing changes and pressure injury prevention
- Catheter care, ostomy care, tube feedings and oxygen therapy
- Collecting blood, urine and sputum samples and running point of care tests
Assessment and reporting:
- Vital signs, intake and output, blood glucose checks and weights
- Observing patients and reporting changes in condition to the RN or physician
- Charting in the electronic health record or on the medication administration record
Daily care and education:
- Helping residents with bathing, dressing, eating and mobility
- Teaching patients and families about medications, diets and home care
Team and unit work:
- Supervising certified nursing assistants on your hall or shift
- Admissions and discharges, shift report and care plan updates
- Stocking the medication cart and ordering supplies

Entry level: new LPN, long term care clinical rotation (106 words)
LPN Student, Clinical Rotation | Skilled nursing facility, 120 beds | Toledo, OH | 2025 to 2026 - Passed oral and topical medications for 8 residents under the supervision of the charge nurse, documenting every dose on the eMAR - Took and recorded vital signs, weights and blood glucose checks twice a shift and reported abnormal values to the RN - Performed dressing changes on stage 2 pressure injuries and repositioned residents on a two hour turning schedule - Assisted with two admissions a week, completing the skin assessment and inventory of belongings - Completed 640 program hours and passed the NCLEX-PN on the first attempt
How to turn an LPN duty into a resume bullet
The job description tells the reader what an LPN does; your bullet has to show how well you did it. Take each duty and add one of three things: how many patients, how fast, or what improved because you did it.
- Duty: "Administer medications." Bullet: "Passed medications for 22 residents on a two hour window with zero missed doses on the quarterly audit."
- Duty: "Monitor vital signs." Bullet: "Caught a resident's drop in oxygen saturation on the 0600 check and escalated to the RN, who transferred him to the hospital that morning."
- Duty: "Supervise CNAs." Bullet: "Assigned and checked the work of four CNAs on a 30 bed hall on night shift."
The CareerOneStop resume guide, run by the US Department of Labor, says "The keywords are the most important part of the resume to get an interview, so be sure they are easy to find." If the posting says med pass, write med pass. If it names PointClickCare or Epic, name the system you used.

Mid level: LPN in a skilled nursing facility (108 words)
Licensed Practical Nurse, Charge Nurse on Days | Skilled nursing and rehab, 150 beds | Grand Rapids, MI | 2022 to present - Run medication passes for 24 to 28 residents per shift, including insulin, anticoagulants and crushed medications by tube - Supervise four CNAs on a 30 bed hall, assigning rooms and checking turns, intake and meal documentation - Complete admission assessments and baseline care plans for short stay rehab patients in PointClickCare - Perform wound care to physician orders and track measurements weekly with the wound nurse - Report changes in condition to the RN supervisor and on call physician, and update families the same shift
LPN duties by setting
The setting changes which duties lead the job entry. A long term care resume leads with medication passes and CNA supervision. A clinic resume leads with rooming, injections and phone triage. A home health resume leads with independence and teaching.

Mid level: LPN in a physician's office (94 words)
Licensed Practical Nurse | Internal medicine practice, six physicians | Columbus, OH | 2021 to present - Room 25 to 30 patients a day, taking vitals, medication reconciliation and history before the physician visit - Give injections and immunizations, including B12, allergy shots and seasonal vaccines, and record lot numbers - Handle phone triage with standing protocols, booking same day visits or routing urgent calls to the physician - Process refill requests and prior authorizations in Epic within one business day - Collect lab specimens and call patients with normal results per office policy

Mid level: home health LPN (98 words)
Home Health LPN | Home health agency | Louisville, KY | 2020 to present - Visit six to eight patients a day across two counties, following the plan of care written by the RN case manager - Perform wound care, catheter changes, ostomy care and blood draws in the home - Teach patients and family caregivers to manage medications, blood sugar checks and wound dressings - Report changes in condition to the RN case manager the same day and document each visit in the agency EHR before midnight - Keep a clean visit record through two state surveys
Duties for a senior LPN or charge nurse resume
The BLS profile notes that licensed practical nurses "must complete a state-approved educational program, which typically takes about 1 year." After that year, what moves you up is not more clinical tasks but responsibility for a hall, a shift or a team. At the senior level the winning bullets are about the unit running well: staffing the shift, training, audits and survey readiness.

Senior: LPN charge nurse in long term care (114 words)
LPN Charge Nurse, Night Shift | Long term care facility, 180 beds | Harrisburg, PA | 2018 to present - Lead the night shift for two units, covering 60 residents with two LPNs and eight CNAs - Build the shift assignment sheet and fill call offs from the float list before the shift starts - Train and check off every new LPN on the medication pass, eMAR and narcotic count procedure - Run the monthly medication cart audit and fix discrepancies with the pharmacy consultant - Prepared both units for the annual state survey, owning the treatment record and fall log review - Carry a medication pass for 20 residents on short staffed nights
LPN duties to leave off a resume
- Anything outside your state's scope of practice. An interviewer from that state will notice, and the state board would too.
- Duties every applicant has, such as "answered call lights," unless you add volume or a result.
- Long lists copied from a job description with no numbers. They read the same as every other applicant's.
- Tasks from a nursing assistant job before you were licensed, unless you label the job clearly as CNA work.
If your title is LVN because you work in California or Texas, use LVN everywhere on the resume. The BLS says responsibilities for the two titles "are nearly identical; their title depends on the state in which they work," so the duty lists above apply to both. Frequently asked questions
What are the duties of an LPN for a resume?
Medication passes, vital signs, wound care, catheter and tube care, specimen collection, charting, reporting changes in condition to the RN or physician, and supervising CNAs. List only the duties you performed under your state's scope of practice, and add a patient count, a setting or a result to each one.
How do I write LPN responsibilities on a resume?
Start each bullet with a verb, name the responsibility, then add a number or a system. For example: "Passed medications for 24 residents per shift in PointClickCare with zero missed doses on audit." Use the posting's wording for skills you have, and keep four to six bullets for your current job.
What should a new LPN put on a resume with no experience?
Your clinical rotations, written like jobs: the setting, the number of patients you cared for, the procedures you performed under supervision and your total program hours. Add your license or NCLEX-PN date, your life support card and any earlier patient care work, such as CNA or caregiver jobs.
Should an LPN resume list the same duties as an RN resume?
No. LPNs work under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician in most settings, so write that you reported changes or contributed to the care plan rather than that you assessed or planned care alone. Accurate scope wording reads as safe practice, and safety is what the hiring nurse checks first.
How many duty bullets should each LPN job have?
Your current job deserves four to six bullets, older jobs two to four. Pick the duties that match the posting and cut the ones every nurse lists. Five bullets with patient counts and results beat a dozen lines copied from a job description.
