CNA Resume No Experience: 6 Samples That Lead With Clinicals

A CNA resume with no experience should put your certification and your clinical hours at the top, because those hours are experience: supervised, hands-on patient care that the employer is legally required to look for. The federal rule behind every state program, 42 CFR 483.152, says a nurse aide training program must "consist of no less than 75 clock hours of training" and "include at least 16 hours of supervised practical training". That is the section of your resume most new CNAs leave out. Below are six complete CNA resume samples for people with no paid healthcare job yet, checked in October 2026: a new certificate holder, a high school graduate, a retail career changer, a family caregiver, a nursing student and someone still waiting for the state exam. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

The job advert says "entry level, no experience required". The application form then asks for your previous healthcare employer, start date and supervisor's phone number. You have a certificate, 100 hours of clinicals and a strong opinion about Hoyer lifts. That is the resume.

The new CNA, certified, clinicals only

This is the standard version. Licence first, clinicals as a job entry, then whatever work history you have, described in care terms where it is honest to do so.

Clinicals go under a heading that says "Clinical Training", not hidden inside education. A charge nurse skimming the page should see patient care before they see the word cashier.

Straight out of high school

If you took the CNA course in high school or right after it, your strongest material is the clinical rotation, plus anything that shows you turn up: attendance, a part-time job, volunteering.

O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, sums up the job as: "Provide or assist with basic care or support under the direction of onsite licensed nursing staff." Read its nursing assistant task list and borrow the nouns. The training requirements are in 42 CFR 483.152, and the four-month rule is in 42 CFR 483.35. Your state's registry sets the title and the exam, so copy the exact credential name from it.

Mistakes that cost interviews

If you are applying with very little work history of any kind, the first job resume guide covers format and length. For the summary lines, the professional summary guide has more examples, and when you move up to nursing school applications, the nursing resume guide takes over. Frequently asked questions

How do I write a CNA resume with no experience?

Lead with your certification and registry status, then a short summary that says you are newly certified and which shifts you can work. Give your clinical training its own section with the unit type and the tasks you did. Add any work history underneath, written to show stamina, reliability and calm with people.

What should I put on my resume if I have no CNA experience?

Your clinical rotation, CPR or BLS, any caregiving for family, volunteering in care settings and any customer-facing job. Describe each one in terms of what a nurse aide does: personal care, transfers, vital signs, documentation and reporting changes to the nurse. Do not invent a paid healthcare job.

Do clinical hours count as experience on a CNA resume?

Yes. They are supervised, hands-on care, and federal rules require every approved program to include at least 16 hours of supervised practical training. Put them under a "Clinical Training" heading with the facility type and the tasks, the same way you would list a job.

What is a good objective for a CNA resume with no experience?

Write a summary instead: certified status, the setting you trained in and the shift you want. For example: "Newly certified nurse aide with clinical training on a 40-bed skilled nursing unit, available for evening and weekend shifts." That tells the employer what you can do, not what you want.

Can I apply for CNA jobs before I pass the state exam?

Often yes. Many facilities hire trainees who are booked for the competency exam. Say so plainly on the resume, with the exam date. Federal rules limit how long a facility can use someone as a nurse aide full time without completing training and the competency evaluation, so be clear about where you are.
