Graphic Design Resume Skills: 25 Skills With the Line to Use

The graphic design resume skills that get interviews fall into three groups: design craft such as typography and layout, the software you produce it in, and the client and production skills that get work out the door. The constraint is that your portfolio already shows the craft, so the skills section has to match the posting's words and the bullets have to prove the rest. O*NET OnLine, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, lists the core task as to "Create designs, concepts, and sample layouts, based on knowledge of layout principles and esthetic design concepts." Below are 25 skills in groups, six complete skills sections by level, and the bullets that prove them. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

You know the skills section you are tempted to write. Creative, detail oriented, passionate about design, Adobe Suite. The art director reading it has seen that exact list on the last forty resumes, and she opened your portfolio before she got to it anyway.

A graphic design skills section for an entry level resume

A first design job is won on software, fundamentals and a portfolio link. Name the programs exactly, group them, and keep soft skills out of the list.

Graphic designer skills for a resume, grouped

Twenty five skills cover almost every posting. Take the ones you could defend in a portfolio review and delete the rest.

O*NET lists the software graphic designers use, including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Figma and Canva, on the same graphic designers summary. Mirror the names the posting uses, because an applicant tracking system matches the word, not the idea.

Mid level graphic design resume skills

After three to five years the skills section should look like the job you do now. Add brand systems, motion or digital work, and the production knowledge that saves a team money.

Complete Mid level: in-house designer with four years on a marketing team example, 87 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Senior graphic designer resume skills

At senior level the reader is looking for direction and judgment. Art directors are described by O*NET as people who "Formulate design concepts and presentation approaches for visual productions and media", on its art directors summary, and a senior designer's skills should show the first steps toward that.

Complete Senior: senior designer leading campaigns at an agency example, 90 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

How to prove graphic design skills on a resume

A skills list is a claim; the experience bullets are the evidence. CareerOneStop puts it directly: "A professional portfolio of their work is a must for graphic designers to show potential employers their skill, creativity, and originality", on its graphic designers profile. The resume's job is to make the reader want to open it.

O*NET also lists "Determine size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy, and select style and size of type" as a graphic design task, which is the craft language to borrow for a bullet about editorial or ad layout. For the whole page, the graphic designer resume guide shows a complete sample, students should start with the graphic design intern resume, photographers applying to studios can use the photographer cover letter, and the resume skills section guide covers layout for any job. Software beyond design belongs in the general computer skills list, and the wider split between craft and tools is in hard skills for a resume.

Frequently asked questions

What skills should I put on a graphic design resume?

Group them into design craft, software and production or client skills. List typography, layout, color and brand identity; name each program, such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Figma; then add print production, briefs and presenting concepts. Choose the ones the posting names and prove the top three in your experience bullets.

What are the top skills for a graphic designer?

Typography, layout and visual hierarchy, brand identity, fluency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, Figma for digital work, and the ability to take a brief and present concepts. Print production knowledge and motion graphics set candidates apart, but the portfolio is what proves all of them.

Should I list soft skills on a graphic design resume?

Not as a bare list. Words like creative and detail oriented are expected and unproven. Show soft skills inside bullets instead: presenting three concepts to a client, revising after stakeholder feedback, meeting a print deadline. A reader believes a soft skill when it comes attached to a project.

How do I list Adobe skills on a resume?

Name each program separately rather than writing Adobe Suite or Creative Cloud alone, because postings and tracking systems search for Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign by name. Put the ones you use daily first, and only list a level if you can defend it in a portfolio review.

Where do skills go on a graphic designer resume?

In a short labeled block near the top, under your summary and portfolio link, then again inside your experience bullets as proof. Keep the block to four or five lines with clear labels so an art director can match it to the posting in seconds.
