A finance cover letter is a one-page letter that shows you can work with numbers and explain them: name the role, give one or two figures you handled, and link them to what the employer needs. Finance readers like precision, so a letter with a number in every paragraph beats a letter with adjectives. Below are seven complete letters, from a graduate to a finance manager, and the structure that sits under them. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
I ran a company with a budget and a bank manager. I can tell you what I looked for in the person who handled the numbers: that they could say a figure and what it meant in the same breath.
Example 1: a finance graduate
No full-time finance job yet, but real coursework and an internship. Put the strongest figure first.

Entry level: Finance graduate (122 words)
Dear Ms. Alvarez,
I am applying for the Graduate Finance Analyst program at Redwood Capital. I will graduate in June with a degree in finance (GPA 3.6), and last summer I interned in the corporate finance team at a regional manufacturer, where I built a monthly variance report that replaced a three-hour manual process.
In my coursework I built a discounted cash flow model for a listed retailer and presented it to a class of 40. I use Excel daily, including pivot tables and lookups, and I have completed the Bloomberg Market Concepts course.
Your program rotates through three teams in two years, which fits how I want to learn. I would welcome the chance to discuss it.
Sincerely, Jordan Lee

What the sources say a finance letter needs
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the work in its financial analysts profile: "Financial analysts research and evaluate financial data, forecast future trends, and prepare reports containing recommendations for businesses and investors." Your letter should show each of those actions at least once: you researched, you forecast, you reported, you recommended.
MIT's career office says in its guide to writing an effective cover letter: "Be sure that each cover letter is specifically tailored to the company you are writing to." Harvard's career services adds in its resume and cover letter guide: "Give examples that support your skills and qualifications." In finance, an example means a figure: a budget size, an error rate, a month-end close time.

Mid level: Financial analyst (104 words)
Dear Mr. Okafor,
I am writing about the Financial Analyst role at Harlow Foods. For three years I have supported the finance director of a retail group, preparing monthly management accounts for 14 stores and a rolling 12 month forecast.
Last year I found a recurring mis-posting of freight costs worth about $180,000 and corrected the coding with the warehouse team. Variance explanations now go to store managers within three days of close.
I use Excel, Power BI and SAP daily. Your advert mentions forecasting for a growing store base, and I would like to bring that experience to Harlow.
Best regards, Priya Nair

Mid level: FP&A analyst (111 words)
Dear Hiring Team at Northwind Software,
I am applying for the FP&A Analyst position. For two years I have owned the monthly forecast for a $40 million software business unit, meeting with five budget holders each month to update their numbers.
I rebuilt the forecast model so that headcount, hosting and commissions flow from one input sheet. The monthly update now takes two days instead of five, and forecast error on revenue fell to about 3 percent over the last four quarters.
I present the results to the finance director every month and write the commentary in plain language. I would like to do the same for Northwind.
Sincerely, Marcus Webb

Mid level: Investment banking analyst (105 words)
Dear Ms. Ferreira,
I am applying for the Analyst position in your Technology, Media and Telecom group. I have spent two years in the corporate development team of a telecoms company, where I built the financial models and valuation analyses for three acquisitions.
On our largest deal, I built the merger model and the comparable companies analysis and prepared the board materials, working 70 hour weeks through signing. The deal closed on schedule.
I am comfortable with LBO and merger models, FactSet and Capital IQ, and I want to work on more transactions. I would be glad to meet your team.
Yours sincerely, Hannah Brooks

Mid level: Credit analyst (107 words)
Dear Mr. Patel,
I am applying for the Credit Analyst role at Clearwater Bank. I currently work in the small business lending team of a credit union, where I assess loan applications of up to $500,000.
Each week I review about 12 applications: financial statements, cash flow, collateral and sector risk. I write a one page credit memo for each and present the recommendation at the weekly committee. My approval recommendations over the last two years have had a loss rate below the team average.
Your advert mentions commercial real estate. I have completed two such cases and would like to build that expertise.
Sincerely, Dana Reyes

Senior: Finance manager (109 words)
Dear Ms. Singh,
I am applying for the Finance Manager role at Alder Logistics. I have spent eight years in finance, the last three as a senior accountant managing a team of three and leading the monthly close for a $60 million business.
I shortened our close from ten working days to six by moving bank reconciliations and accruals into a fixed weekly schedule. I also led our first external audit with no significant findings.
You are growing quickly, and I would like to build the finance function that supports that. I am happy to discuss the plan I would follow in the first 90 days.
Best, Chris Taylor

Mid level: Career changer into finance (111 words)
Dear Ms. Gomez,
I am applying for the Finance Associate role at Bloom Home. After five years in retail operations, I now manage a store with a $3 million annual budget, and I completed the CFA Level 1 exam last year.
In my store I own the weekly sales and labour cost report, and I cut labour cost as a percentage of sales by 2 points in a year by changing the rota. I enjoy the numbers more than the shop floor and want to work on them full time.
I know Excel well and I am learning SQL. I would welcome a conversation about the role.
Kind regards, Amy Collins
The structure under every letter
- Opening. The role, the company and your single strongest fact.
- Proof. One or two tasks from the advert, each with a figure: budget size, error rate, days to close.
- Tools. The software the advert names, such as Excel, SAP, Power BI or Bloomberg. Only the ones you really use.
- Fit. One sentence on why this employer, in their words.
- Close. A short ask for a conversation.
MIT's guide says to try not to simply repeat your resume in paragraph form. In a finance letter that means picking one result and giving the detail: what you found, what you changed, what it was worth. For layout, see our cover letter format guide. For related pages, see the accounting cover letter, the CV template for finance and the entry level financial analyst resume.
What to leave out
- Detail-oriented. Show it with an error you caught.
- Figures you cannot support. A finance reader will ask where they come from.
- A tour of your degree. One line is enough.
- Confidential numbers from a current employer. Use ranges or percentages.
- A long list of tools. Name those in the advert.

Yes, if the advert asks for it, with one example of what you do in it, such as pivot tables, forecasting models or reconciliations.
