Accounting Cover Letter: 7 Full Letters From Intern to CPA

An accounting cover letter is a one-page letter that names the role, shows two or three pieces of accurate work with numbers, and says what you will do for the firm, in four short paragraphs. The one constraint: accounting employers read for accuracy first, so a typo or a vague claim fails the letter before the content is weighed. O*NET lists a core accountant task as "Prepare, examine, or analyze accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards." Below are seven complete letters, from an accounting internship to a controller. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

An accountant's cover letter that contains an arithmetic error has done something worse than missing the point. It has audited itself and failed.

An accounting internship cover letter

This is the most common request: a student applying for a summer or tax-season internship. It gets the role, the school and one relevant result into the first paragraph.

Dear Ms. Alvarez,

I am applying for the Accounting Intern position at Prairie Valley CPAs. I am a junior at Central State University, majoring in accounting with a 3.7 GPA, and I have completed Intermediate Accounting I and II and Federal Income Tax.

As a volunteer for the university's free tax program last spring, I prepared 38 federal returns under a supervising instructor, checking each against source documents before filing. None was returned for corrections. I also keep the books for a student club in QuickBooks, with a $9,000 annual budget and monthly reconciliations to the bank statement.

Your internship description mentions busy-season work on individual returns and bookkeeping clients, which is the work I have been doing in a smaller form. I am comfortable in Excel, including pivot tables and lookups, and I am available from May 12.

I have attached my resume and would welcome the chance to talk. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely, Priya Nair priya.nair@email.com | (555) 555-0112

What an accounting cover letter must do

Baruch College's Writing Center, in its model audit intern letter, asks the reader to judge the letter by one question: "How does the cover letter add to what is already included in the resume?" That is the test for every paragraph below. Do not repeat the resume; explain it.

Purdue's Online Writing Lab says there are "four basic parts to a cover letter: heading, introduction, argument/body, and a closing", and advises you to "Focus each paragraph on one qualification that shows you are a good match for the job and organization." In an accounting letter that usually means three things:

Audit intern

Dear Mr. Okafor,

I am writing to apply for the Winter Audit Intern position at Harlow and Pierce LLP. I am a junior in the accounting program at Metro University with a 3.8 GPA, and I spoke with Ms. Dana Wu about your audit practice at the university's accounting society dinner.

In my internship in accounts payable at a food distributor last summer, I reconciled 22 vendor accounts monthly and found 11 duplicate payments, which the controller recovered. That work taught me to follow a transaction from the invoice to the bank record, which is also how I understand audit evidence.

I would value the chance to learn on your teams, and I am available for the full winter season. My resume is attached.

Sincerely, Marcus Bell

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Staff Accountant position posted on your careers page. I graduated this May with a B.S. in Accounting from Lakeview State University and am preparing for the CPA exam; I have passed the Auditing and Regulation section.

During my internship at a regional retailer, I prepared monthly journal entries and bank reconciliations for four locations, and I closed the books two days earlier by building a checklist for the team. I also helped prepare the workpapers for the annual audit.

I am comfortable in NetSuite and Excel and would like to work in a team that closes its books on a schedule. Thank you for considering me.

Sincerely, Grace Kim

Accounts payable clerk

Mid level: Accounts payable cover letter (113 words)

Dear Ms. Reyes,

I am applying for the Accounts Payable Specialist role at Northgate Supply. For four years I have processed about 450 invoices a week for a building products distributor, matching each to a purchase order and receipt before payment.

In the last year I caught 14 pricing errors before payment, and I moved our vendor statements to a monthly reconciliation that removed late-payment fees. I work in SAP and Excel and have trained two new clerks.

Your posting mentions a move to electronic invoicing. I led a pilot of that at my current employer and would be glad to bring what we learned. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Omar Hassan

Senior accountant with CPA

Mid level: Senior accountant cover letter (121 words)

Dear Mr. Lindqvist,

I am applying for the Senior Accountant role at Cormac Industrial. I am a licensed CPA with six years in manufacturing accounting, and I currently run the month-end close for two plants.

At Westbrook Manufacturing I cut the close from nine working days to six by moving accruals into a standard template and assigning review dates to each account. I also prepared the audit schedules for two years of external audits with no adjustments proposed by the auditors.

Your posting describes a move to a single ERP. I led the finance side of a similar upgrade, writing the test cases and running user acceptance testing. I would like to bring that to your team.

Sincerely, Elena Vasquez, CPA

Controller

Senior: Controller cover letter (115 words)

Dear Ms. Whitfield,

I am applying for the Controller position at Riverbend Foods. For eight years I have led the accounting team for a $140 million food manufacturer, with a staff of nine across general ledger, payables and cost accounting.

Three things from that role matter for yours. I rebuilt the cost accounting model so product margins are known by line within five days of month-end. I led the transition from QuickBooks to NetSuite without a missed close. And I manage the audit relationship, with clean opinions in each of the last six years.

I would welcome a conversation about how I could support Riverbend's growth plans and your lender reporting.

Sincerely, Daniel Reyes, CPA

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Accounting Associate position at Pine Street Partners. For five years I have been a retail operations manager responsible for a $3.2 million store budget, weekly cash reconciliation and vendor payments, and I am completing a certificate in accounting at Metro Community College.

In my current role I reconcile the safe, deposits and registers daily, and I found a recurring 40 dollar a week discrepancy that traced to a point of sale setting. I use Excel for monthly variance reports to the district manager.

I am looking for a role where careful records are the job, not a side task. I have completed Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting with As, and I can start in January.

Sincerely, Tamara Okafor

What these seven letters share

Every letter above does the same four things in order: it names the role in the first sentence, gives a credential in plain facts, offers one or two pieces of checkable work, and ends with a plain close. The Purdue OWL puts the closing job simply: "Close with a strong reminder of why you are a good match for the job and the organization."

Frequently asked questions

How do you start an accounting internship cover letter?

Name the position and the firm in the first sentence, then your school, your major and one number, such as your GPA or the returns you prepared as a volunteer. Address the letter to a named person if you can find one. Keep the first paragraph to three sentences.

What should an accounting cover letter include?

It should include the role you want, your qualification (degree, CPA or progress toward it), one or two pieces of checkable work with numbers, the software you use and a close that says you have attached your resume. Keep it to one page and check every figure before you send it.

How long should an accounting cover letter be?

One page, about 250 to 350 words, in four short paragraphs. Accounting employers read for accuracy and economy, so a tight letter is a point in your favor. If you are tempted to add a fifth paragraph, check whether it repeats your resume and cut it if so.

Do I need a cover letter for an accounts payable job?

Send one if the posting allows it. A short letter that names your invoice volume, the systems you use and one example of an error you caught can set you apart from applicants who send only a resume. Keep it to three paragraphs and match the posting's wording.
