Financial Analyst Keywords: 48 Resume Terms and 6 Examples

Financial analyst keywords are the terms a finance hiring manager and the applicant tracking system look for: financial modeling, forecasting, budgeting, variance analysis, valuation, DCF, Excel, SQL and the planning tools you used. The one constraint is the type of analyst role, because FP&A, corporate finance and investment analysis use different vocabularies and a resume that mixes all three fits none. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's database, lists this financial and investment analyst task: "Employ financial models to develop solutions to financial problems or to assess the financial or capital impact of transactions." Below are 48 keywords in six groups and six complete resume examples. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
An FP&A analyst resume with the keywords in place
The first example is an FP&A analyst, the planning and forecasting role inside a company's finance team. Notice the keywords sit next to a decision or a number the business acted on.

Mid level: FP&A financial analyst, consumer goods (95 words)
Financial Analyst, FP&A, Summit Pantry Foods, Minneapolis, MN | 2022 to present - Build the annual operating budget and rolling forecast for a $180M snack division - Run monthly variance analysis of actuals against budget and explain the top drivers to division leaders - Built a driver-based model in Excel linking promotion spend to volume, used in the 2025 pricing decision - Automated the monthly P&L pack with SQL queries and Power BI dashboards, saving four days of close work - Partner with sales and supply chain on scenario analysis for a plant expansion
Ten keywords, and each one points at something a CFO would recognize from a meeting.
48 financial analyst keywords, in six groups
Use only the ones that are true of your work and that appear in the posting. Open each bullet with a verb from the resume action verbs list, then the keyword, then what the business did with your analysis.

O*NET's task list confirms the reporting group: one task is to "Draw charts and graphs, using computer spreadsheets, to illustrate technical reports." Its software list for the job still names IBM Lotus 1-2-3 next to Microsoft Excel. List Excel. Lotus has suffered enough.
Example 2: Entry-level financial analyst, new graduate
With no full-time history, the keywords come from an internship, coursework and a modeling project. Put the tools high on the page.

Example 5: FP&A manager
Manager resumes need the team, the process and the business partnering. Keep the tool list short and the outcomes long.

How to match the keywords to the posting
Read the posting twice. The first pass tells you which analyst it is: budget and forecast words mean FP&A, valuation and coverage words mean investment, capital and business case words mean corporate finance. The second pass gives you the exact phrases.
- Mirror the wording. If the ad says "variance analysis," write that, not "budget comparisons." See how literal the matching is in our guide to ATS keywords in real job ads.
- Name the size. A forecast for a $20M unit and one for a $2B company are different jobs. Give the scale.
- Show what changed. A model nobody used is a hobby. Say what decision it fed.
- Keep tools honest. List the systems you have logged into, at the level you used them.
NACE, in its career readiness competencies, describes critical thinking with a line that could be a finance job ad: "Accurately summarize and interpret data with an awareness of personal biases that may impact outcomes." The bullet that proves it is the one where your number changed someone's mind.
For complete resumes at each level, see our entry-level financial analyst resume and senior financial analyst resume pages, and the finance CV template. Harvard's resume guide and the Bureau of Labor Statistics financial analysts profile cover format and duties. The same grouping method is used on our pages for sales keywords for a resume, customer service resume keywords and product management keywords.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most important financial analyst keywords?
Financial modeling, forecasting, budgeting, variance analysis, valuation, DCF, Excel, SQL, P&L and management reporting come up in most postings. FP&A roles add rolling forecast and planning tools such as Anaplan or Hyperion. Investment roles add equity research, due diligence and Bloomberg. Always start from the posting in front of you.
What finance resume keywords help an entry-level applicant?
Excel, financial modeling, forecasting, variance analysis, DCF, SQL and a visualization tool such as Tableau or Power BI. Prove them through internships, a student investment fund, case competitions or class projects. One bullet showing a model you built and who used it is worth more than a long skills list.
Should I list Excel skills in detail on a financial analyst resume?
Yes, briefly. Name the functions that matter for the role, such as pivot tables, XLOOKUP, INDEX MATCH, macros or Power Query, in one skills line. Then show them in use inside a bullet, such as a forecast model or an automated report. Detail without proof reads like a course syllabus.
Do FP&A and investment analyst resumes use different keywords?
Yes. FP&A resumes lean on budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, business partnering and planning systems. Investment analyst resumes lean on valuation, coverage, investment memos, portfolio risk and market data tools. Some terms overlap, such as financial modeling and Excel, but the summary and bullets should speak the language of the role you want.
How many keywords should a financial analyst resume have?
Aim to cover the main requirements in the posting, often ten to fifteen distinct terms, each used at least once inside a bullet. There is no score for repetition. A finance reader notices padding quickly, so one well-placed keyword with a number beats three loose mentions.
