French CV Sample: 6 Complete CVs in French, by Level
By Mustafa Tarabya, founder of CVBooster · Published · Updated

A French CV sample shows the same reverse chronological structure as a US resume, written in French under six standard headings: Profil, Expérience professionnelle, Formation, Compétences, Langues and Centres d'intérêt. The constraint is length and tone: one page early in your career, two at most, in plain formal French. Actiris, the public employment service of the Brussels region, sets the limit: "Rédigez votre CV sur PC et limitez-vous à 2 pages A4 recto maximum." Below are six complete CVs in French, checked in October 2026, for jobs in Quebec, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg and New Brunswick, with the English you need to adapt them. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Your French is good enough for the job. It is just not good enough, yet, to know whether "responsable de" sounds like a manager or like the person who gets blamed. These samples settle that for you.
The headings of a French CV, in order
Every sample below uses this order. Copy the headings exactly; a francophone recruiter scans for them the way a US recruiter scans for Experience and Education.
| English heading | French heading | What goes in it |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | Profil | Three lines: title, years, two strengths |
| Experience | Expérience professionnelle | Jobs, newest first, with action verbs |
| Education | Formation | Degrees and diplomas, newest first |
| Skills | Compétences | Tools and methods, no rating bars |
| Languages | Langues | Each language with a level |
| Interests | Centres d'intérêt | Two or three real ones, optional |

French resumes and US resumes: what changes
The structure is familiar; the details are not. Five things change when you move a US resume into French.
- The name of the document. In French it is a CV. A "résumé" in French is a summary, so never title the file that way.
- Dates. Write months in words without capitals ("septembre 2024"), use "depuis" for a current job, and "de 2021 à 2023" for a past one.
- Verbs. Lines start with a noun ("Accueil des clients", "Gestion du planning") or a past participle, not "I". Keep the same form all the way down a job.
- Photo. Optional, and the safe default is none. Actiris says to add one only on request: "Choisissez et scannez une photo professionnelle si elle est exigée par l’employeur." In Canada, Job Bank is firmer: "Although in some countries it may be acceptable to include a photo, it is not the norm in Canada."
- Languages. A Langues section is expected on every francophone CV, with a level for each language.
How to write a CV in French in five steps
- Start from your US resume and cut it to the jobs and degrees that matter for this posting.
- Translate the job titles into the titles used in the posting, not word for word.
- Rewrite each bullet as a noun phrase: "Managed a team of five" becomes "Encadrement d'une équipe de cinq personnes".
- Add the Langues section with an honest level for each language.
- Have a native speaker read it once. Europass, the European Union's CV service, gives the rule that matters most: "Make sure your CV is easy to read." Short sentences in correct French beat long ones in impressive French.

How to state language levels on a French CV
In Europe, recruiters expect the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference, from A1 to C2, and many will test you on the phone at the level you wrote. In Canada, words are more common: "notions", "intermédiaire", "avancé", "courant", "langue maternelle". Never write "bilingue" unless you can do the interview in both languages. If you are an English speaker writing your first CV in French, the CV language guide covers how to describe your levels honestly.
For a job in Quebec, the French resume in Quebec guide explains when the law actually asks for French and when an English resume is fine. Newcomers can start from the Canadian resume for newcomers, and the CV vs resume guide explains why the word changes across borders.
Frequently asked questions
How do you write a CV in French?
Use six headings in this order: Profil, Expérience professionnelle, Formation, Compétences, Langues and Centres d'intérêt. List jobs newest first, start each line with a noun such as "Gestion" or "Accueil", write months in words and keep it to one or two pages. Add a level for every language and have a native speaker check it.
What are French resumes called?
A French resume is called a CV or curriculum vitae. The French word "résumé" means a summary, so a French speaker will not read it as the document. In Quebec you will also hear "curriculum vitae" in full on government forms, and in Belgium and Switzerland "CV" is standard. Name your file with your name and "CV".
Should I put a photo on a French CV?
Only if the employer asks for one. Actiris, the Brussels public employment service, says to add a professional photo when the employer requires it, and Canada's Job Bank says a photo is not the norm in Canada. Without a request, leave it out; the space is better used for your experience and languages.
How long should a French CV be?
One page for students and early career applicants, two pages at most for experienced candidates. Actiris sets the limit at two A4 pages, single sided. If your CV runs longer, cut older jobs to a single line and drop school details once you have a degree.
Can I send an English CV to a French speaking employer?
Send the CV in the language of the posting. If the advert is in French, a French CV shows you can do the job in French before the interview tests it. If it is in English or both languages, an English CV is fine; add a Langues section showing your French level.
How do I translate my job title into French?
Use the title the posting uses, not a literal translation. "Customer service representative" becomes "agent de service à la clientèle" in Canada and "conseiller clientèle" in many European adverts. Check three or four local postings for the same job and copy the most common wording.
