What your one fact signals, in the official wording

The trait labels above are not invented. O*NET OnLine publishes a Work Styles list with a definition for each trait, and the definitions are a useful mirror for the impression your fact leaves.

On the registered nurses summary, O*NET defines Perseverance as "A tendency to exhibit determination and resolve to perform or complete tasks in the face of difficult circumstances or obstacles at work", Adaptability as "A tendency to be open to and comfortable with change, new experiences, or ideas at work", and Cooperation as "A tendency to be pleasant, helpful, and willing to assist others at work".

The same descriptor set appears on the maintenance and repair workers summary, which shows the traits are occupation-wide rather than one profession's language. Pick the fact whose trait the job already rewards.

The twelve-word test

Three checks, in order, and a fact that fails any of them is the wrong fact.

Length. Say it in twelve words or fewer. Longer and you are telling a story nobody asked for.
Follow-up. A polite stranger must be able to ask one question about it without prying.
Room. It has to be safe in the most formal room on your calendar this month.

Tip: If two facts pass, keep the one that is older. A fact you have lived with for years survives follow-up questions; a fact from last weekend runs out after one.

Facts with a number beat facts with an adjective

A number gives the listener something to hold. It also forces you to be honest, which is why the best facts are countable and the worst are self-assessments.

If your fact carries a figure, check it the way a public body would. NOAA states, on its ocean exploration facts page, that "As of April 2026, 28.7% of the global seafloor had been mapped with modern high-resolution technology". NIST records that "The first leap second was inserted into the UTC time scale on June 30, 1972" and that "The current difference between UTC and TAI is 37 seconds", on its leap seconds page.

Neither of those is your fun fact. They are the standard your own number should meet before you say it out loud.

The fact that describes your work ethic. "Fun fact, I am a perfectionist" or "fun fact, I never miss a deadline" is a job interview answer smuggled into a social question, and every room hears it. The same goes for any fact that needs a disclaimer, any fact about a diagnosis, and any fact that is really a complaint about a previous employer.
