Funny Resume: 6 Joke Resumes and the Lines That Backfire

A funny resume is a parody written in real resume format, and it works only when everyone is in on the joke: a resume for a cat, a toddler or a coffee machine, made for a birthday card or a team chat. On a real application, humor almost never survives, because the person reading it is matching your resume against a list. CareerOneStop, the US Department of Labor's career site, puts the standard plainly: "Use simple, current language." Below are four complete joke resumes you can copy for fun, two real resumes that carry one light line safely, and the kinds of jokes that cost people interviews. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
You want the hiring manager to smile. She will, at the cat resume your sister posts in the family chat. On your application she is ticking boxes, and a joke is the one line on the page with no box next to it.
Joke resume examples you can copy
These are parodies, written to be shared, framed or read out at a leaving party. Use the format of a real resume, keep a straight face, and let the content do the work. That contrast is the whole joke.

Why jokes backfire on a real resume
A real resume is not read for entertainment. It is read against a job posting, often first by software that scans for keywords and then by a person who has a list of requirements. A joke is the one line on the page that matches nothing on the list.
Harvard's career office describes a resume as "a concise, informative summary of your abilities, education, and experience." A joke is neither concise nor informative, and it takes the space of a line that could have been evidence. CareerOneStop also warns that if your resume "looks generic or reads too similarly to other candidates' resumes, it could be rejected", which is the real reason people reach for humor: they want to stand out. The way to stand out is a specific result, not a punchline.
These are the kinds of funny lines that tend to backfire:
- Jokes in the objective or summary. It is the first thing read, and the reader has not decided whether they like you yet.
- Joke skills. "Expert napper" or "professional coffee drinker" pushes real skills out of the skills section and tells the reader you ran out of real ones.
- Sarcasm about past employers. It reads as a preview of how you will talk about the next one.
- Novelty fonts and colors. A comic-style font is a joke the reader sees before the words. MIT's career office advises: "Use a conservative font no smaller than 10pt". Plain is not boring; plain is readable.
- Joke email addresses. An address you made at fourteen is the first line of contact information. Use your name.
When a little humor works on a real resume
There is room for one light line in two places: the interests section and a creative portfolio. A specific, true interest is the safest place for personality, because it is not where the decision is made. Keep it to a few words and make sure it is something you would happily talk about in an interview.

Entry level: real resume with one light interest line (143 words)
JORDAN LEE Austin, TX | (512) 555-0147 | jordan.lee@example.com
SUMMARY Marketing graduate with two internships in social media and email marketing. Wrote and scheduled 60 posts for a regional coffee chain and grew its email list by building a welcome series. Looking for a marketing coordinator role.
EXPERIENCE Marketing Intern | Regional coffee chain, Austin | Summer 2026 - Wrote and scheduled 60 Instagram and Facebook posts using the brand voice guide. - Built a four email welcome series in Mailchimp and tracked open rates weekly.
Social Media Intern | University athletics department | 2025 to 2026 - Filmed and edited short game day videos for TikTok and Instagram Reels.
EDUCATION BA, Marketing | University of Texas at Austin | 2026
SKILLS Canva, Mailchimp, Meta Business Suite, CapCut, Google Analytics
INTERESTS Competitive baking (two county fair ribbons, zero for presentation), trail running
The baking line is funny because it is specific and true, and it gives an interviewer an easy first question. It sits at the bottom of the page, after the evidence, where it cannot cost anything.

Mid level: creative resume where the voice is part of the job (145 words)
SAM PATEL Brooklyn, NY | (718) 555-0193 | sam@sampatelwrites.com | Portfolio: sampatelwrites.com
SUMMARY Copywriter with five years writing for consumer brands, from snack packaging to app store listings. Known for short, funny copy that still sells the product. Looking for a senior copywriter role at an agency with a playful brand voice.
EXPERIENCE Copywriter | Independent creative agency, New York | 2022 to present - Write packaging, social and launch copy for four consumer food and drink brands. - Wrote the launch campaign line for a snack brand, picked from 40 options presented to the client. - Run the agency's internal naming sessions for new products.
Junior Copywriter | Digital agency, New York | 2020 to 2022 - Wrote app store descriptions and push notifications for three mobile apps.
EDUCATION BA, English | Rutgers University
SKILLS Brand voice, concept development, packaging copy, social copy, naming
For a copywriter, comedy writer or social media role, being funny is a skill, so the resume can show it. Even here, the humor lives in the portfolio link and the work described, not in jokes about the reader or the job.
How to make your resume memorable without jokes
The resumes people remember are the ones that answer the posting well. MIT puts it this way: "Your experience descriptions shouldn't read like job descriptions." Write what you achieved, with a number or a result, and you will stand out more than any joke could.
- Lead with a summary that names the role you want and your strongest proof; see our resume summary examples.
- Match the skills section to the posting rather than padding it; the skills to put on a resume guide shows how.
- Cut the common errors before you add anything clever; start with these resume mistakes to avoid.
- Save personality for an interests line or an interesting facts about me answer in the interview, where it belongs.
Frequently asked questions
Is it okay to put humor on a resume?
Usually not in the main sections. A resume is matched against a job posting, and a joke matches nothing on the list. One short, true and specific line in the interests section is fine for most jobs, and creative roles such as copywriting can show humor through the work itself.
What are some funny things to put on a resume as a joke?
For a parody resume, use the real resume format with absurd content: a pet applying to run the household, a toddler negotiating snacks, the office coffee machine asking for a promotion. Keep the headings serious and the bullets ridiculous. Never send a joke resume to a real employer unless the posting asks for one.
Can a funny resume help you get a job?
Rarely. It may get attention, but attention is not the same as an interview. Hiring managers need to see that you meet the requirements, and a joke takes space from that evidence. Specific results and a summary that matches the posting do far more to make your resume memorable.
What is a funny curriculum vitae?
It is the same thing as a funny resume, under the longer name used outside the US. A funny CV is usually a parody written for a leaving card, a birthday or a team chat, following the real CV format of profile, experience and skills with comic content.
How do I make my resume stand out without being unprofessional?
Name the exact role in your summary, put a number or result in your strongest bullets, and match the skills section to the posting. Add one specific interest at the bottom if you like. A clean, readable layout beats a novelty design, and a true result beats a punchline every time.
