Casual Interview Outfits: 9 Smart Casual Looks by Job

A casual interview outfit is smart casual: trousers or a midi skirt, a plain sweater, blouse or button-up, and clean closed shoes, one step smarter than what the staff wear to work. The one constraint: casual means relaxed, not unpressed, and the outfit has to look chosen. The UNC Chapel Hill Career Center describes the middle tier as "Great for networking events, presentations, or casual interviews", with "Sweaters, button-ups, or simple blouses" and "Trousers, chinos, or midi skirts". Below are nine complete looks for common casual jobs, what to avoid and how to find out the dress code before you decide. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Nobody has ever been turned down for being too ironed. A great many people have been turned down for looking as though the interview was an afterthought.
One look, done properly
The standard smart casual outfit, for an office or an administrative role:

Mid level: Smart casual look, office and admin interview (64 words)

The rule: one step above the team
The Southern Oregon University career center puts the principle in two steps: get a sense of the corporate culture before you interview, then "dress up just a bit more than the people already working there." The UNC center adds "When in doubt, go slightly more formal — it's easier to dress down with accessories than to underdress."
Union College's Becker Career Center is more cautious about fashion-led fields: "Other industries, such as fashion and marketing, may be trendier, but conservative professional attire is always the best choice for an interview." If you cannot tell what the culture is, take the more formal reading.
How to find the dress code
- Look at the staff. The company website, social posts and LinkedIn photos show what employees wear.
- Ask the recruiter. "Is there a dress code I should plan for?" is a normal question and shows preparation.
- Visit if you can. For a shop, a cafe or a branch, walk past and look.
- Check the posting. Uniform and appearance lines often say it directly.
Nine casual looks by job
Each one is a complete outfit. Mix pieces to suit your style and the weather.
Retail or shop floor

Entry level: Retail interview outfit (53 words)
Top: plain polo, knit top or button-up in a solid color, ironed Bottom: dark trousers, chinos or a plain skirt, no tears or fading Shoes: clean, comfortable closed shoes; plain sneakers only if the store is clearly sneaker-friendly Avoid: large logos, heavy perfume, anything the store sells that competes with its own brand
Barista or coffee shop

Entry level: Barista or cafe interview outfit (49 words)
Top: a plain t-shirt-weight knit or button-up, tucked or cleanly cut, in a solid color Bottom: dark jeans without rips or dark chinos Shoes: closed, non-slip-looking flats or sneakers that are clean Details: hair tied back, clean nails, a small apron-ready look; bring a pen and a folded resume
Bank teller or branch role
Banking sits near the formal end, so dress up from smart casual.

Entry level: Bank teller interview outfit (41 words)
Top: a collared shirt or simple blouse in white or a soft color, plus a blazer Bottom: dark dress trousers or a knee-length skirt Shoes: polished flats, loafers or low heels Details: neat hair, understated jewelry, a portfolio with your resume
Office and administrative role

Mid level: Office administrator interview outfit (43 words)
Top: a sweater or soft blouse in navy, gray or beige, with a cardigan or casual blazer Bottom: chinos or tailored trousers Shoes: loafers, flats or low boots Details: the same clean look from shoulders to shoes; nothing that wrinkles in a chair
Tech startup or creative role
UNC lists tech, education, creative fields, nonprofits and startups as common for smart casual. A suit may look out of place, but a hoodie will too.

Mid level: Startup or creative interview outfit (48 words)
Top: a good-fitting sweater, overshirt or plain button-up; a small pattern is fine Bottom: dark jeans without rips or chinos Shoes: minimalist sneakers or boots that are clean Details: one personal touch, such as a watch or a scarf, and a laptop bag with your portfolio link ready
Healthcare front desk or clinic support

Mid level: Healthcare front desk interview outfit (40 words)
Top: a blouse or button-up in a calm color; scrubs only if the employer has asked for them Bottom: dark trousers or a knee-length skirt Shoes: closed-toe, quiet-soled, comfortable for standing Details: minimal jewelry, trimmed nails, light or no scent
Warehouse, trades or hands-on work

Entry level: Warehouse or trades interview outfit (58 words)
Top: a clean collared shirt or plain work-style shirt, no stains or holes Bottom: clean work trousers or dark jeans Shoes: closed-toe work boots or sturdy shoes that are clean; bring safety boots if you own them Details: hair tied back, no loose jewelry; show you are ready to work without pretending you are off to the office
Video interview

Mid level: Video interview outfit (55 words)
Top: a solid-color top from the collar up, not white against a white wall; a blazer or cardigan if you want Bottom: dress as you would for an in-person interview in case you stand up Details: camera at eye level, plain background, good light in front of you, no busy patterns that shimmer on screen
For women, men and gender-neutral dress
The Union College career center says it plainly: "If your day-to-day attire doesn't conform to a traditional gender norm, your interview clothing doesn't have to, either." The same pieces work across styles. Choose a clean top with a collar or neckline that stays put, a bottom that fits, a layer, and shoes you can walk in. For women, a skirt, midi or trousers are all fine at this level. For men, chinos and a button-up or sweater work for most casual roles. For anyone, the test is the same: neat, well fitted and appropriate for the workplace.
What to avoid
- Ripped, faded or very tight clothing. The UNC guide asks you to avoid "overly distressed or tight items".
- Flip-flops and worn-out shoes. The guide asks for shoes that are "clean, closed-toe, and professional".
- Strong scents. The Southern Oregon handout says to "Avoid strong smells" and to keep yours neutral.
- Gum, coffee or soda in the room. The same handout asks you to leave them out.
- Clothes you have not tried on. Lay them out the night before and check the fit.

Frequently asked questions
What is a casual interview outfit for a woman?
A casual interview outfit for a woman is smart casual: trousers, chinos or a midi skirt with a plain blouse, button-up or sweater, a blazer or cardigan if you like, and clean closed shoes. Choose solid, neutral colors, make sure everything is pressed, and dress one step above what the staff wear.
Can I wear jeans to a casual interview?
Only if the workplace is clearly casual and the jeans are dark, clean and unripped. If you are not sure, choose chinos or dark trousers instead. The UNC career center suggests avoiding overly distressed or tight items, and going slightly more formal when in doubt.
What should I wear to a coffee shop or retail interview?
Wear a clean, plain top in a solid color, dark trousers or chinos, and clean closed shoes. Tie your hair back, keep jewelry simple and avoid strong scents. You do not need a suit, but you should look neater than a typical shift and ready to start work.
Should I dress up if the interview is on video?
Yes. Wear a solid top from the collar up, pick a plain background and sit with good light in front of you. Dress below the waist as you would in person, in case you need to stand. A tidy outfit also helps you feel prepared, which shows in your voice.
