LinkedIn Headline Examples: 40 Headlines by Job and Level

A good LinkedIn headline names the job you do or want, the skill or specialty that sets you apart, and one piece of proof, for example "Payroll Specialist | ADP and Workday | Multi-State Payroll for 1,200 Employees". The one constraint is the first few words, because LinkedIn shortens long headlines next to your name in search results and comments. MIT's Career Advising and Professional Development explains why it matters: "Your headline appears in many places on the site, along with your profile photo." Forty headline examples follow, six of them annotated. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Half the headlines on LinkedIn say "Passionate professional seeking new opportunities". The other half say "Visionary" with three emoji. Somewhere in between is a headline that tells a recruiter what you actually do, and it is surprisingly easy to write.

LinkedIn headline examples, annotated

Mid level: LinkedIn headline for a payroll specialist, annotated (52 words)

Headline: Payroll Specialist | ADP and Workday | Multi-State Payroll for 1,200 Employees

Why it works: - "Payroll Specialist" is the job title a recruiter types into search - "ADP and Workday" are the systems the adverts ask for - "Multi-State Payroll for 1,200 Employees" is proof of scale in five words

Title, tools, proof. The formula works for most jobs, and it reads cleanly even when LinkedIn cuts it after the first part.

The formula for a LinkedIn headline

Job title or target title + specialty, tools or industry + one proof point or goal

Western University's career centre headline guide frames it as a menu: "In a headline, consider including at least two of the following:" a current role, an area of study, top skills, accomplishments, a goal or an industry of interest. Put the most important part first, because that is the part people see in search results and next to your comments.

Harvard's Mignone Center for Career Success runs its own LinkedIn guide; match your headline to the job title you use on your resume so both say the same thing.

LinkedIn headline examples for students and graduates

Student: LinkedIn headline for an internship search, annotated, complete example, 43 words

Student: LinkedIn headline for an internship search, annotated (43 words)

Headline: Computer Science Student at Georgia Tech | Python, SQL | Seeking Summer 2027 Software Internship

Why it works: the school and major answer "who is this", the two skills match intern adverts, and the goal tells recruiters exactly which openings to send.

LinkedIn headline examples for job seekers

Job seeker: LinkedIn headline while unemployed, annotated, complete example, 49 words

Job seeker: LinkedIn headline while unemployed, annotated (49 words)

Headline: Executive Assistant to C-Suite | Calendars, Travel, Board Prep | Available Immediately

Why it works: "Available Immediately" says the same thing as "unemployed and looking" without the word, and it is useful to a recruiter with an urgent opening. The title and the three duties do the rest.

LinkedIn headline examples for career changers

Career change: LinkedIn headline for a teacher moving into instructional design, complete example, 59 words

Career change: LinkedIn headline for a teacher moving into instructional design (59 words)

Headline: Teacher Moving Into Instructional Design | Articulate Rise, Storyboarding | 8 Years in the Classroom

Why it works: it names both the old job and the new target, so the eight years count as evidence instead of a mismatch. The tools prove the move is already happening. Our career change resume guide uses the same logic on paper.

LinkedIn headline examples for experienced professionals

Experienced: LinkedIn headline for a project manager, annotated, complete example, 45 words

Experienced: LinkedIn headline for a project manager, annotated (45 words)

Headline: Project Manager, PMP | Commercial Construction | Projects Up to $40M

Why it works: the certification sits next to the title because recruiters filter on it, the industry narrows the search, and the project size is a number they can compare against the job.

LinkedIn headline examples for managers and executives

Senior: LinkedIn headline for a VP of operations, annotated, complete example, 45 words

Senior: LinkedIn headline for a VP of operations, annotated (45 words)

Headline: VP of Operations | Multi-Site Distribution | Built Teams of 300+

Why it works: at senior level, recruiters search by scope. "Multi-Site" and "300+" tell them the size of job this person has already done, which is the first question in any executive search.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good headline for LinkedIn?

A good headline names your job title or target title, your specialty or main tools, and one proof point, separated by vertical bars or commas. For example: "Data Analyst | SQL, Tableau | Retail and E-Commerce Reporting." It should use words recruiters search for and match the title on your resume.

What should I put in my LinkedIn headline if I am unemployed?

Put the job you are looking for and the skills you bring, not the fact that you are unemployed: "Executive Assistant | Calendars, Travel, Board Prep | Available Immediately." Turn on LinkedIn's open-to-work setting separately so recruiters can find you, and keep the headline focused on the work you do.

What is a good LinkedIn headline for a student?

Name your school and major, two skills that match the jobs you want, and your goal: "Nursing Student, BSN 2027 | Clinical Rotations in Med-Surg and Pediatrics." Include your graduation year if you are looking for internships or entry-level roles, because recruiters often search by it.

How long should a LinkedIn headline be?

Long enough to hold a title, a specialty and one proof point, which for most people is 60 to 120 characters. LinkedIn cuts long headlines in search results and next to comments, so put the most important words first and let the rest add detail for people who open your profile.
