A good LinkedIn profile for a student says three things before anyone scrolls: what you study, what you have already done with it, and what kind of work you want next. The sample LinkedIn profiles for students below show that in seven versions, from a first-year undergraduate with no jobs yet to a graduate student heading into industry. The one constraint is that you have little to show, so every line has to carry a class project, a campus job or a club role with a real detail in it. The advice follows the career centers at MIT and Missouri State University. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Most student profiles say "Student at University" in the headline and nothing in the About box. That is not a profile. That is a name tag at a conference nobody came to.
A first-year student LinkedIn profile with no experience
MIT's LinkedIn guide for first-year undergraduates says it plainly: "Sure, you can keep this very simple to start, such as “MIT Student” or “Aspiring Researcher”." Simple is fine in week one. By the end of the first year, add the major you are leaning toward and one thing you have actually done.

Entry level: first-year undergraduate, no jobs yet (126 words)
Headline Biology Student at Ridgeway State University | Lab Volunteer | Interested in Public Health Research
About I am a first-year biology student at Ridgeway State University, planning to declare a public health minor next fall. This semester I volunteer six hours a week in a soil microbiology lab, where I prepare media, label samples and keep the freezer log. In high school I ran the science club's community water testing project, which taught me how to collect data people outside a classroom can use. I am looking for a summer research assistant role or an internship with a county health department.
Experience Undergraduate Lab Volunteer, Ridgeway State University Microbiology Lab, Sep 2026 to present - Prepare growth media and label samples for two graduate researchers
What to put in each section, in order
LinkedIn gives you more boxes than a resume, and the order matters because recruiters read top down and stop early.
- Headline. Your major, your school, and one specific thing: a job, a skill or the field you want. MIT's guide to LinkedIn profiles and summaries says to "Use words recruiters are likely to use when searching LinkedIn for candidates."
- About. Three to five sentences in the first person: what you study, what you have done, what you want next.
- Experience. Campus jobs, part-time work, internships, research. Write them like resume bullets, not job titles.
- Education. School, degree, expected graduation date, relevant courses and activities.
- Skills. Start with the eight to ten that match the jobs you want.
The Missouri State career center gives the headline test in one line: "It should answer the question: What is your professional status?"
A college student LinkedIn profile with a part-time job
A part-time job counts. Serving tables, working a register or answering phones in the dean's office shows reliability and people skills, and the profile should say so with the detail a manager would recognize.

Entry level: sophomore business student with a campus job (144 words)
Headline Business Administration Student at Calder University | Student Manager, Campus Dining | Seeking Operations Internship
About I study business administration at Calder University and work 15 hours a week as a student manager in the campus dining hall. I schedule a crew of twelve student workers, cover call-outs and close the register at the end of each shift. Last spring I rebuilt the shift schedule in a shared spreadsheet so swaps are approved in one place instead of a group chat. I am looking for a summer 2027 internship in operations or supply chain, where scheduling and inventory are daily work.
Experience Student Manager, Calder University Dining Services, Jan 2026 to present - Schedule and supervise a crew of 12 student workers across breakfast and lunch shifts - Moved shift swaps into one shared schedule, cutting missed shifts the manager had to cover
Student LinkedIn profile example for an internship search
Once you have an internship, it becomes the center of the profile. MIT's career office recommends you "Describe your experiences like you would on a resume", with action verbs and specific contributions, not a list of titles and dates.

Entry level: junior accounting student with an internship (142 words)
Headline Accounting Student at Westbrook College | Audit Intern at Hollis and Grant CPAs | CPA Track
About I am a junior accounting major at Westbrook College on track to sit for the CPA exam after my fifth year. This summer I interned on the audit team at Hollis and Grant CPAs, where I tested accounts payable samples for two nonprofit clients and drafted the workpaper notes my senior reviewed. On campus I am treasurer of the Accounting Society and run the club's budget and reimbursements. I am looking for a 2027 audit or tax internship with a firm that trains interns on real client work.
Experience Audit Intern, Hollis and Grant CPAs, Jun 2026 to Aug 2026 - Tested accounts payable samples and documented exceptions for two nonprofit audits - Drafted workpaper notes reviewed and signed off by the engagement senior
LinkedIn profile for a nursing or healthcare student
Clinical students have a special advantage: the clinical rotations are real experience. List them with the unit and what you did, without anything that could identify a patient.

Entry level: senior nursing student completing clinical rotations (123 words)
Headline BSN Student at Marlow University, Graduating May 2027 | Medical Surgical and Pediatric Clinicals | Certified Nursing Assistant
About I am a senior nursing student at Marlow University and a certified nursing assistant. I have completed clinical rotations on a medical surgical floor, a pediatric unit and a community clinic, and I work weekend shifts as a CNA at a long-term care facility. My capstone is on a 30-bed medical surgical unit, where I carry two patients under my preceptor. After graduation I am applying to new graduate residency programs in medical surgical or pediatric nursing.
Experience Certified Nursing Assistant, Elmwood Care Center, Aug 2025 to present - Provide personal care, vital signs and mobility support for residents on a 24-bed unit
A computer science student profile with projects
For technical majors, projects carry the profile. Put them in Experience or in a Projects section and link to the code or a demo. MIT's career office suggests you "Add media to your experiences and summary to build an online portfolio."

Entry level: computer science junior with projects, no internship yet (123 words)
Headline Computer Science Student at Pinecrest University | Python, SQL, React | Looking for Summer 2027 Software Internship
About I am a computer science junior at Pinecrest University focused on data and web applications. My strongest project is a course planning tool I built with two classmates that pulls the public course catalog and flags schedule conflicts; about 200 students used it during spring registration. I also work as a teaching assistant for the intro programming course, holding two office hours a week. I am looking for a summer 2027 software or data engineering internship.
Projects Course Planner, team of three, Feb 2026 to May 2026 - Built the conflict checker in Python and the front end in React; code and demo linked
Graduate student LinkedIn profile example
A master's or PhD student is still a student on LinkedIn, but the profile should read like a professional in training. Name the research, the methods and the sector you want.

Mid level: master's student moving from teaching into data analysis (137 words)
Headline MS in Applied Statistics Candidate at Harrow State University | Former High School Math Teacher | Data Analyst, Education and Public Sector
About I taught high school math for four years before starting a master's in applied statistics at Harrow State University. In my current research assistantship I clean and analyze state attendance data in R and write the summary tables for a policy brief. Teaching gave me the habit of explaining numbers to people who did not ask for them, which is most of what an analyst does. I graduate in May 2027 and am looking for data analyst roles in education, public health or local government.
Experience Graduate Research Assistant, Harrow State University Education Policy Lab, Aug 2026 to present - Clean and analyze district attendance records in R for a state policy brief
LinkedIn profile for an international student
International students often need to say what they can legally do and when. Keep it factual and leave visa details for the conversation.

Entry level: international graduate student seeking an internship (123 words)
Headline MS Finance Student at Brennan University | Financial Modeling, Excel, Python | Seeking Summer Internship in Corporate Finance
About I am a first-year master's student in finance at Brennan University. Before starting the program I worked for two years as a junior analyst at an equity research firm, where I updated earnings models for twelve consumer companies and wrote the first draft of quarterly notes. I am fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese. I am looking for a summer 2027 internship in corporate finance or financial planning and analysis, and I am happy to talk through eligibility early in the process.
Experience Junior Analyst, Northgate Equity Research, Jul 2024 to Jun 2026 - Updated earnings models for 12 consumer companies each quarter
Skills, photo and URL: the small things that finish the profile
- Skills. MIT's first-year guide notes that "LinkedIn will allow you to add up to 50 skills." Start with the ten that appear in the jobs you want, then add more as you take courses.
- Photo. A clear head-and-shoulders photo against a plain background. A friend with a phone is enough.
- Custom URL. Change the random string to your name, then put the link on your resume. The LinkedIn profile vs resume guide shows how the two should line up so they never contradict each other.
- Education details. Add the expected graduation date, relevant courses and activities.
Turn the profile into a resume
A profile and a resume are built from the same facts. If you have filled in the samples above, most of your college student resume is already written; the student resume page has the one-page layout, and the resume summary examples show how to shrink your About section into three lines. If this is your first job application, the first job resume guide covers what to put where. On CVBooster you need an account; the free tier lets you fill in your resume by hand, and the AI writing help and the finished CV download are part of Pro.
Frequently asked questions
What should a student put in a LinkedIn headline?
Your major and school, plus one specific detail: a job, a skill, a club role or the field you want next. "Accounting Student at Westbrook College, Audit Intern" tells a recruiter more than "Student". Use the words a recruiter would search for, such as the job title you want or the tools you use.
What should a college student write in the LinkedIn About section?
Three to five sentences in the first person. Say what you study, what you have done with it (a job, an internship, a project, a club role), one detail that proves it, and the kind of role you want next. Do not paste your resume. The About section should sound like you explaining yourself to an alumnus.
Should a student with no experience be on LinkedIn?
Yes. A first-year student can build a useful profile from school, volunteering, clubs and class projects. Start with a simple headline, your education and one or two activities, then add each job or project as it happens. Recruiters and alumni can only find you if the profile exists before you need it.
How long should a student LinkedIn summary be?
Short enough to read on a phone without scrolling much: three to five sentences, roughly 80 to 120 words. Lead with your major and your best piece of evidence, end with what you want next. Longer is fine for graduate students with research to explain, but keep the first two sentences strong.
Is a LinkedIn profile the same as a resume for students?
No. A resume is a one-page document tailored to one job. A LinkedIn profile is public, written in the first person, and can hold more detail: projects, media, courses and recommendations. Keep the facts identical on both, because recruiters compare them, and tailor the resume for each application.
