National Honor Society Resume: 6 Examples for Students

By · Published · Updated

6 min read

On a National Honor Society resume, list the society by its full name with your years of membership, then add any office you held and the service you did, with numbers. One line is enough if you are a member. A few bullets are right if you led a project or held an office. Below are six complete student resumes, from a first part-time job to a college internship, showing where NHS goes and how much to say.

Membership in an honor society is not a personality. A bare NHS member line is a badge on a jacket. A member line with 40 service hours and the tutoring drive you ran is a thing someone did.

Example 1: a high school student applying for a first job

Employers read an honor society as a signal of reliability. Keep it short, put it under education, and let the work-style evidence come from a service project.

How the sources tell you to list it

James Madison University's career center covers honors in one short passage. It says: "If you have less than three honor entries, list them under the education heading." With more, it suggests a separate heading. It also says: "Include the dates you received these honors."

Drexel's co-op and career center says high school honors are fine for now: "It is acceptable to list honors and awards that you received both in high school and college." It also tells you when to stop: "As you gain more honors at the college level, you can begin to eliminate your high school achievements, keeping those that are particularly unique."

ORISE lists honorary societies as one of the optional items on a STEM resume, after the core sections. The point of "optional" is that you decide by the job. For a library assistant post, the service hours matter more than the induction year. For a research internship, the GPA and the science activities matter more.

Where NHS goes on your resume

Spell out the full name the first time. Do not claim the society's selection standards for yourself in your own words, since they vary by chapter. State your GPA only if it helps. For high school layouts, our guide to high school education on a resume shows where the details go, the college freshman resume covers the next stage, and the honors student resume shows a full layout. Frequently asked questions

Should I put National Honor Society on my resume?

Yes, if you are in high school or a first-year college student. It shows reliability and a record of service. Later in college you can drop it.

Where do I put National Honor Society on a resume?

Under education if it is your only honor, or in an honors or awards section if you have several. List the years of membership.

How do I list an NHS office on a resume?

Put it in a leadership or activities section with the title, the years and one or two bullets on what you ran, with numbers.

Do I need to write out National Honor Society?

Write it in full the first time. After that, "NHS" is fine if the resume mentions it again.

Does NHS help with a first job?

It helps a little by signalling dependability. Service work, a part-time job and references matter more.
