Additional Info for Resume: 6 Examples of What to Add

By · Published · Updated

5 min read

The additional info section of a resume is a short block near the bottom for facts that help your case but have no home above: languages, certifications, licenses, volunteer work, awards. Keep it to a few lines, make every line relevant to the job, and move anything strong enough to carry weight up into your experience. Below are six complete resumes with the section filled in, from a first job to a senior role.

If your resume ends with a line that says hobbies are reading, travelling and music, the section is not extra information. It is a lost-property box. The test for every line is simple: would the person hiring this role miss it if it were gone?

Example 1: first job, student with languages and volunteering

A first resume has little experience, so the extra section carries real weight.

What the sources say belongs here

Stanford's career guide describes the section as a catch-all: "This section could include computer skills, languages, volunteer work, sports, and interests." Its own sample resumes use short labelled lines, one per category, so the reader can scan them.

James Madison University covers honors in the same way. Its advice: "If you have less than three honor entries, list them under the education heading." Only when you have more does a separate Honors or Awards section make sense. It also says to include the dates. If your extra section is mostly awards, it may deserve its own heading.

ORISE, which places scientists and students in federal research programs, lists what is optional on a STEM resume: "extracurricular activities, honorary societies, publications, presentations, languages, etc." Optional is the key word. If it does not help this application, leave it out.

What to cut

Frequently asked questions

What do you put in the additional information section of a resume?

Languages, certifications and licences, volunteer work, awards and professional memberships. Include only what helps for this job.

Should I include additional information on my resume?

Only if you have something relevant that does not fit above. If the resume already fills one page, cut the section before you cut experience.

Where does additional information go on a resume?

At the end, after experience, education and skills. Label it "Additional Information" or use a more exact heading such as "Certifications and Languages".

Are hobbies additional information?

They can be, if short and tied to the job. A hobby that shows a skill the role wants is useful. A long list of interests is not.

How long should the additional section be?

Three to six lines. Past that, it is better to split it into proper sections or drop the weakest items.
