Address Format in Resume: 6 Header Examples to Copy
By CVBooster Team · Published · Updated

For most U.S. resumes, the address format is just your city and state on the contact line, for example "Denver, CO", next to your phone and email. Add a full street address and ZIP code only when the application asks for it, which is usual for government, healthcare and some local jobs. Below are six complete header examples to copy, the rules for abbreviations and order, and what to do when you are relocating, working remotely or applying from abroad.
An address on a resume does one job: tell the employer roughly where you are. It does not need to tell the mail carrier. Your front door is not part of your qualifications.
The standard format, ready to copy
This is the header for most applicants. The location sits on the same line as the phone and email, with separators between them.

Entry level: Standard header, city and state only (10 words)
MAYA ROBERTS Denver, CO | 555-0142 | maya.roberts@example.com | linkedin.com/in/mayaroberts-example

What the sources say
Berkeley's career center lists what a resume's contact section should hold in its resume guide: "your contact information (name, email address, phone number, and LinkedIn URL)". A street address is not on that list, which fits current practice.
If you do write a full address, the U.S. Postal Service sets the standard in its Postal Addressing Standards: "A standardized address is one that includes all required address elements and that uses the Postal Service standard abbreviations". In practice that means a two-letter state code, the street suffix in short form (St, Ave, Rd) and a five-digit ZIP.
MIT's career office tells applicants in its resume guide that "Recruiters don't have time to search your resume for information, so they appreciate familiar formats." A header that follows the familiar order is the safe choice.

The rules, one by one
- Order. Street, then city, state and ZIP, as on an envelope. On one line, separate with commas: 2418 Maple Ave, Columbus, OH 43215.
- State codes. Use the two-letter postal code (CO, OH, MA). Spell the state out when the code is easy to misread, such as MI, MO, MS or MA.
- Street suffix. St, Ave, Blvd, Rd. Apartments follow the street: Apt 4B. Avoid the # sign.
- ZIP. Five digits is enough. ZIP+4 is for mail, not resumes.
- Spacing and punctuation. One comma between city and state, no comma between state and ZIP.
- Placement. In the header under your name, on the same line as your phone and email. Never in the footer, because tracking software may skip footers.
- Consistency. Use the same format on the resume, the cover letter and the application form.
For the rest of the header, see our guide to resume headers, the heading for a CV and how to make a resume.
Wrong and right, side by side
Most address mistakes on resumes are small and easy to fix. Each pair below shows the line as people often write it, then the line to use.
- Too much: 2418 Maple Avenue, Apartment #4B, Columbus, Ohio 43215-1234. Better: Columbus, OH
- All capitals: 2418 MAPLE AVE, COLUMBUS OH 43215. Better: 2418 Maple Ave, Columbus, OH 43215
- Missing state: Springfield. Better: Springfield, IL (there are many Springfields, and employers do not guess)
- Misread code: Jackson, MS next to a phone number with a Michigan area code. Better: Jackson, Mississippi
- Two homes with no label: Boston, MA | Atlanta, GA. Better: Boston, MA (school) | Atlanta, GA (permanent)
- Old address: a city you left last year. Better: your current city, or Relocating to Austin, TX in June 2027
A short note on privacy
A resume travels. It goes to job boards, recruiters, hiring systems and sometimes to people you never wrote to. A home address in that pile can be copied and reused. A city and state tells an employer what they need and gives away nothing else. If an employer later needs a full address for a background check or payroll, they will ask for it on a form that is meant to hold it.
The same goes for your email and phone. Use an email address built from your name and a phone number you answer, and keep any personal social media off the page unless it is part of the job.
When to use a full address
- The application asks for it. Government, hospital, school district and police jobs often do.
- Local residency is required. Some roles need you to live within the city or county.
- You live close to the employer and the commute is a selling point. A city and neighborhood do the same job.
Otherwise, leave the street off. It adds a privacy risk and no value.
What to avoid
- The phrase address available upon request. It wastes a line and invites questions.
- A distant old address when you have moved. Employers may assume you need relocation.
- A P.O. box for a local job. It can look like you are hiding where you live.
- A mailing format with line breaks and all capitals on a modern resume. It looks like a form.
- Placing it above your name. Name first, always.
