CV for Scientists: 6 Complete Examples by Career Stage

A CV for scientists leads with research, not with a job title: the methods you run, the results you produced and the work that carries your name. Below are six complete CVs for a lab technician, a PhD graduate, a postdoc, an industry scientist, a government scientist and a principal scientist, followed by the rules that decide how long each one runs.
Your methods section is 40 pages long and the reader has about as much patience as a reviewer on reviewer two. That is not a problem with your science. That is a CV that forgot who is reading it.
Example 1: a lab technician, first scientist role
An entry CV is one page. There are no papers yet, so the weight sits on techniques, instruments and what you ran every week.

Entry level: Research technician, 1 page (128 words)

What the sources agree on
Harvard's career services, in its guide for PhD students, says that for a nonacademic role where the reader shares your background, "your academic CV is probably fine to use." It adds that a resume is "typically shorter, 1-2 pages at most," with less space for awards, conference talks and publications.
MIT's career office, in its CV guide, recommends keeping two versions: "an authoritative CV with all information, and a tailored CV, written for a specific position or opportunity." The full one is your archive. The short one is what you send.
ORISE, which places scientists in federal research programs, puts a number on the length: "A CV is more detailed, often spanning two to five pages." Its advice for a federal mentor is to choose the format that best shows your experience.
The University of Colorado treats the CV as raw material. It says the CV can be the start of a "base resume" for industry roles, so for an industry application you pull from your CV rather than send all of it.

Which scientist CV you need
The six examples use three formats, and you choose by the reader:
- Academic CV. Long, complete and ordered by research output. Use it for faculty, postdoc and fellowship applications.
- Industry resume or short CV. One or two pages, results first, publications cut to the few that matter. Use it for pharma, biotech, tech and consulting.
- Government CV. Fuller than an industry resume, with certifications, field work and the duties of each role spelled out.
Keep one master CV and cut from it for each application. For the academic side, see our academic CV examples and the PhD application CV. For the industry side, the research scientist resume, the clinical scientist resume and the lab technician resume show full layouts. Sections like techniques and skills are covered in our resume skills section guide.
What to leave out
- Every poster since your first degree. Keep the ones tied to the job.
- Methods written as a paper. One line per technique, then the result.
- Reference lists. Say "available on request" or leave it out.
- A photo or personal details. The US format has no place for them.
Frequently asked questions
What should a CV for a scientist include?
Contact details, a short profile, research or work experience, education, publications and patents, grants and awards, and a techniques or skills list. Order them by what matters to the reader.
How long should a scientist CV be?
An early-career CV is one page. A postdoc or faculty CV usually runs two to five pages, and a senior CV can run longer. An industry resume stays at one or two pages.
Should I use a CV or a resume as a scientist?
Use a CV for academic roles and a one- or two-page resume for most industry jobs. If the employer is a research institute whose readers share your background, an academic CV can work.
How do I list publications on a scientist CV?
Number them in a consistent citation style, put your name where the reader can find it and list the most recent first. For industry, show the few most relevant and say a full list is available.
Do I list lab techniques or skills?
Yes, but tie them to something you did. A technique with a result next to it carries more weight than a long list of equipment.
