An NHS resume is a one page list of your activities for a National Honor Society application, organized so the faculty council can find evidence of each pillar quickly: scholarship, service, leadership and character. The constraint is proof: the council already has your grades, so the resume has to show hours, roles and results they cannot see on a transcript. The National Honor Society, run by the National Principals Association, says it was founded "based on the four pillars of scholarship, service, leadership, and character." Below are the layout that works, what to write under each pillar, and five complete NHS resume examples. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
You are fifteen and somebody wants a resume. The good news is that the council is not expecting a career.

How to lay out an NHS resume
Use the same four headings the council scores, in this order, on one page:
- Header: your name, grade, school, student email and phone.
- Scholarship: GPA if your chapter asks for it, honors and advanced classes, academic awards and competitions.
- Service: each activity with the organization, your role, dates and total hours.
- Leadership: positions you were elected or appointed to, and things you organized without a title.
- Character: jobs, family responsibilities and anything that shows people trust you.
If your school's chapter gives you its own activity form, use it and keep this resume as your master list. If it asks for a resume, attach one in this format.

What to write under each pillar
Scholarship. List the classes and honors that show challenge, not just grades. If your GPA is strong and your chapter wants it, put it on the first line. If it is not your strongest number, let the class list and awards do the work.
Service. This is the section councils read closest. Give every activity a date range and total hours, and one line on what you actually did. The CareerOneStop resume guide, run by the US Department of Labor, says a summary can highlight "accomplishments from volunteer or community work, academic work, or other," and for a student, volunteer work is the main event.
Leadership. A title is the start, not the proof. Say what changed because you were there: an event you ran, people you recruited, money you raised.
Character. This is where part time jobs and family responsibilities belong. A student who works weekends or looks after younger siblings is showing reliability, and the council knows it.

Frequently asked questions
What should I put on my NHS resume?
Your classes, honors and awards under scholarship, every volunteer activity with dates and total hours under service, elected roles and things you organized under leadership, and jobs or family responsibilities under character. Keep it to one page and give each line a role, a number or a result the council can check.
How do you write a resume for National Honor Society with no experience?
Use what you have. List school clubs, church or community events, helping neighbors, sports teams and family responsibilities. Give each an approximate number of hours and one line on what you did. A short resume with honest hours is stronger than a long one stretched with activities you only attended once.
How long should an NHS resume be?
One page. Councils read many applications, and the four headings let them find each pillar fast. If you have more activities than fit, keep the ones with the most hours, the clearest leadership and the most recent dates, and drop single events with no role.
Do I need to include service hours on an NHS application?
Yes, if you have them, because service is one of the four pillars. Write the organization, your role, the dates and a total for each activity, plus a grand total at the top of the section. If your chapter has a minimum, check that your total meets it before you submit.
Is an NHS resume the same as a college activity resume?
Mostly. Both list scholarship, service, leadership and work, with dates and hours. For college, you add later activities, awards and a short line on your intended major. Many students keep one master resume from the NHS application and update it each semester.
