NICU Nurse Cover Letter: 6 Complete Letters for Every Level

A NICU nurse cover letter has one page to say three things a nurse manager cannot get from your resume: why this unit, what you can already do with the smallest patients, and how you work with frightened parents. Unit level, gestational ages, the equipment you have managed and one specific moment. Below are six complete letters you can copy: a new graduate, a mother-baby nurse moving to the NICU, a Level III nurse moving to Level IV, an RNC-NIC nurse applying for charge, a travel nurse and a transport nurse.

Most neonatal nurse cover letters open with a lifelong passion for babies. So does every application to work in a toy shop. The NICU manager wants to know if you have titrated a drip on a 700-gram patient and still remembered to explain it to the mother.

Letter 1: new graduate applying to a NICU residency

Nicu nurse cover letter example, Entry level: New graduate RN, NICU nurse residency

Entry level: New graduate RN, NICU nurse residency (185 words)

Dear Ms. Calloway,

I am applying for the NICU Nurse Residency at Wrenfield Children's Hospital. I graduated with my BSN from Merriweather Falls College of Nursing in May 2026 and passed the NCLEX-RN in July.

My 144-hour capstone was in a 32-bed Level III NICU. With my preceptor I cared for two infants per shift, from 28-week preemies on CPAP to term babies under phototherapy. I learned to cluster care around feeds, to read a monitor trend before it became an alarm, and to calculate weight-based doses twice before asking for a co-sign. On my last week I admitted a 31-week infant from delivery with my preceptor and gave the father his first update at the bedside.

Your residency's twelve-week orientation with a dedicated preceptor is the reason I am applying to Wrenfield first. I want to learn the unit the right way, and I want to stay. Your unit's family-integrated care program is also what I saw work best during my capstone.

I would welcome the chance to talk with you about the residency. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Imani Rowe, BSN, RN

What the letter has to prove

The core of the job is the same as on any unit, just smaller and faster. O*NET's registered nurse task list includes "Monitor, record, and report symptoms or changes in patients' conditions." In a NICU letter, that sentence becomes a story: the desaturation pattern you caught, the feeding intolerance you reported early, the blood gas you drew and read.

Then show the family side. Parents are in the room for most of a NICU stay, and a letter that mentions them reads like someone who has worked there. One sentence about teaching kangaroo care or explaining a ventilator setting does more than a paragraph about compassion.

Finally, name the unit level and the patients. Level III and Level IV units differ in what they treat, and the manager will look for your gestational ages, weights, and whether you have cared for babies on ventilators, after surgery or on cooling.

Letter 2: mother-baby nurse moving to the NICU

Nicu nurse cover letter example, Mid level: Mother-baby RN transferring to NICU

Mid level: Mother-baby RN transferring to NICU (180 words)

Dear Mr. Okonkwo,

I am applying for the Staff RN position in your Level II special care nursery. I have spent three years as a mother-baby nurse at Fairlake Regional Medical Center, caring for four couplets per shift.

In that time I have become the nurse my unit calls when a newborn looks wrong. I screen for hypoglycemia, jaundice and sepsis risk, start the workup per protocol and call the neonatal team early. Last year I recognized grunting and retractions in a 37-week infant at two hours of life, called the rapid response and helped transfer him to your nursery. That handoff is the reason I am applying.

I am NRP certified, I have floated to the nursery twelve times this year, and I am comfortable with IV starts on newborns, gavage feeds and phototherapy. I know the NICU is a step up in acuity, and I am asking for the orientation that comes with it.

I would be glad to shadow a shift if that helps your decision. Thank you for considering my application.

Best regards, Aaliyah Brooks, RN

Letter 3: Level III NICU nurse moving to a Level IV unit

Nicu nurse cover letter example, Mid level: Level III NICU RN applying to a Level IV NICU

Mid level: Level III NICU RN applying to a Level IV NICU (172 words)

Dear Dr. Ainsworth and Ms. Pryor,

I am applying for the Staff RN position in the Level IV NICU at Bellmoor Children's Hospital. I have worked for four years in a 40-bed Level III NICU at Saltmarsh Women's Hospital, and I want to care for the surgical and cardiac infants we transfer to units like yours.

My usual assignment is two infants, often micro-preemies under 1,000 grams on conventional or high-frequency ventilation. I manage UVC and PICC lines, TPN, vasoactive drips and blood gas monitoring, and I precept new graduates. Since 2024 I have been on our golden hour team, which runs the first hour after an extremely preterm delivery from a checklist.

Our infants who need surgery, ECMO or cardiac care leave us for a Level IV unit. I have prepared many of them for that transport. I want to be the nurse at the other end.

I would welcome a conversation about your orientation for nurses with Level III experience. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Marisol Vega, BSN, RN

Letter 4: RNC-NIC nurse applying for charge

Nicu nurse cover letter example, Senior level: NICU RN with RNC-NIC applying for charge nurse

Senior level: NICU RN with RNC-NIC applying for charge nurse (164 words)

Dear Ms. Harrington,

I am applying for the NICU Charge Nurse position at Ashgrove Point Hospital. I have eight years of NICU experience, the last six in your 48-bed Level III unit, and I hold the RNC-NIC.

For the past two years I have been relief charge about two shifts a week. I make assignments for up to 14 nurses, balance acuity against experience, and run the shift huddle with the neonatal nurse practitioner. When we had three admissions in one hour last March, I reassigned two nurses, called in the float pool and kept every new baby with a nurse who had cared for that gestational age before.

I also chair our unit practice council. This year we rewrote the central line maintenance bundle with infection prevention, and our team went the rest of the year without a line infection.

I would like to bring that work to the charge role full time. Thank you for considering me.

Respectfully, Claire Ashdown, BSN, RNC-NIC

Letter 5: travel NICU nurse

Nicu nurse cover letter example, Mid level: Travel NICU RN, 13-week contract

Mid level: Travel NICU RN, 13-week contract (154 words)

Dear Nurse Recruiter,

I am applying for the 13-week NICU travel contract at Tamsin Bay Hospital. I have six years of NICU experience, the last two as a travel nurse in four Level III and Level IV units, and I hold a multistate RN license and the RNC-NIC.

I am used to learning a new unit fast. On my current contract I was taking a full assignment after two orientation shifts, including ventilated preemies and post-op infants. I have charted in Epic and Cerner, used three brands of ventilators, and worked with units that run both primary and team nursing.

Every unit I have worked in had its own way of doing things. I ask first, follow your protocol and keep my questions for the right moment. Two of my last three units asked me to extend.

I am available from January 12. Thank you for your time.

Kind regards, Casey Brandt, BSN, RNC-NIC

Letter 6: NICU transport nurse

Nicu nurse cover letter example, Senior level: NICU RN applying to a neonatal transport team

Senior level: NICU RN applying to a neonatal transport team (151 words)

Dear Mr. Delgado,

I am applying for the Neonatal Transport RN position at Quarry Hill Children's Hospital. I have nine years of NICU experience in a Level IV unit and hold the RNC-NIC and CCRN (Neonatal).

I have spent the last three years on our unit's admitting team. I receive every outborn transfer, stabilize the infant with the neonatal nurse practitioner and give report to the bedside nurse. I have seen the difference a strong transport team makes, and I want to be on that team.

My skills match your posting: ventilator management including high-frequency, UVC placement assist, therapeutic hypothermia, prostaglandin infusions for ductal-dependent infants, and calm communication with referring hospitals that rarely see a sick newborn. I completed STABLE and I am an NRP instructor.

I would welcome the chance to ride along before an interview. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely, Mateo Serrano, BSN, RNC-NIC, CCRN (Neonatal)

Certifications in the letter

Name your certifications in the closing signature and once in the body if they matter for the role. The two NICU credentials have different requirements, so check yours before you write it.

The National Certification Corporation lists for RNC-NIC: "24 months of specialty experience as a U.S. or Canadian RN comprised of a minimum of 2000 hours (this must have occurred sometime in your career)." AACN's CCRN (Neonatal) page asks you to "Practice as an RN or APRN for 1,750 hours in direct care of acutely/critically ill neonatal patients during the previous two years, with 875 of those hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application." A new graduate should not mention either as coming soon. A nurse with four years can say the exam is scheduled once it is.

Frequently asked questions

What should a NICU nurse cover letter include?

The unit and role you want, your NICU or newborn experience with gestational ages and equipment, one specific example, how you work with families, your certifications, and why this unit.

How do I write a NICU cover letter with no NICU experience?

Lead with your newborn experience from mother-baby, labor and delivery, pediatrics or your capstone. Show newborn assessment, early escalation and family teaching, and ask for the orientation that comes with the role.

Should a new grad mention RNC-NIC?

No. RNC-NIC and CCRN (Neonatal) both require NICU hours as an RN before you can sit the exam. Mention NRP and BLS instead.

How long should a NICU nurse cover letter be?

One page. Keep the paragraphs short: unit and role, your experience with one specific moment, why this unit, and the close.

Who do I address a NICU cover letter to?

The NICU nurse manager or the nurse recruiter named in the posting. If you cannot find a name, use the job title, such as Dear NICU Hiring Manager.
