NICU Nurse Resume: 6 Examples for New and Experienced RNs

By · Published · Updated

6 min read

A NICU nurse resume leads with your RN license and your unit: the level of care, the number of beds and the kinds of patients you have looked after. Under that go the specific skills the unit looks for, such as ventilator care, feeding support, family teaching and your certifications. Below are six complete summaries and experience entries for new graduates, staff nurses and charge nurses, followed by what the official sources say about the work and how to lay out the page.

The line compassionate nurse who loves babies is on a great many NICU resumes and tells the reader nothing. A line that says Level III, 36 beds, 24-week infants, does.

What the official sources say about the job

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in its profile of registered nurses, sets out the entry route: "Registered nurses usually take one of three education paths: a bachelor’s degree in nursing, an associate’s degree in nursing, or a diploma from an approved nursing program." It also says that "Registered nurses must be licensed." On a NICU resume, the license line goes near the top, with your state and status.

The same page describes the specialty: neonatal nurses take care of newborn babies who have health issues. That one-line job description is why the unit level and bed count in your summary matter. They tell the reader how sick your patients were.

For the duties of intensive care nursing more broadly, the Occupational Information Network lists, in its critical care nurses summary, tasks such as: "Monitor patients for changes in status and indications of conditions such as sepsis or shock and institute appropriate interventions." That page covers adult and pediatric critical care, so use it as a guide to the language of intensive care and not as a NICU-specific list. Choose the lines that match infants, such as monitoring, medication and family support.

Harvard's career services, in its resume guide, says "Tailor your resume to the type of position you’re seeking." For a NICU job that means the level of care the posting names.

Sections to include and in what order

Skills worth naming for a NICU resume

Name the skills the posting names, if they are true for you: newborn and preterm assessment, ventilator and CPAP care, umbilical line care, feeding support and tube feeding, phototherapy, medication calculation, developmental care, family teaching, kangaroo care, safe sleep education and electronic charting. A new graduate can honestly list assessment, medication safety and family communication, and then add the equipment skills as they build them.

Keep the skills list short and grouped. A wall of forty terms is hard to read, and the resume skills section guide shows a cleaner way.
