Aviation Resume: 6 Samples for Pilots and Mechanics

An aviation resume lists your certificates and ratings, the aircraft you have flown or worked on, and your hours or maintenance record, in a format a chief pilot or maintenance manager can scan in one pass. Below are six complete aviation resumes: a flight instructor, a regional first officer, a captain, a new mechanic, an experienced aircraft technician and an airport operations agent, checked in November 2026. Pick the closest to your path and replace the details with your own.
Aviation resumes break one rule of normal resume advice: the numbers are not optional. An airline recruiter reading "experienced pilot" learns nothing, while 3,200 total hours, 900 turbine, 600 PIC tells the whole story in a line. Put the numbers where they can be found.
Example 1: a flight instructor building hours
Start here if you hold your commercial certificate and are working toward an airline or charter job. Lead with certificates and ratings, then total hours, then what you have done with students.

What the sources agree on
The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database defines the airline pilot job in one line: "Pilot and navigate the flight of fixed-wing aircraft, usually on scheduled air carrier routes, for the transport of passengers and cargo." Its task list includes "Inspect aircraft for defects and malfunctions, according to pre-flight checklists." and "Work as part of a flight team with other crew members, especially during takeoffs and landings." Your bullets should show the same duties in your own aircraft.
For maintenance, O*NET's profile of aircraft mechanics and service technicians says: "Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul aircraft engines and assemblies, such as hydraulic and pneumatic systems." That is the shape of a good maintenance bullet: what you diagnosed, on what, and what you did about it.
The Federal Aviation Administration explains on its Become a Pilot page that "There are several different types of pilot's licenses, from student pilot all the way up to airline transport pilot." Because the certificate decides what you may fly, it goes first on a pilot resume.
MIT's career office tells every applicant, in its resume guide, to "Record accomplishments and contributions, not just responsibilities." In aviation, an accomplishment is a safe record, a pass rate, an on-time figure or a fleet you kept airworthy.

What to put where
- Pilots. Certificates and ratings first, then flight time, then experience. Break hours into total, PIC, turbine, multi-engine, night and instrument if you have them.
- Mechanics. Certificates, then aircraft types and systems, then bullets with the task, the aircraft and the result.
- Operations and cabin. Station, aircraft types, volume per shift and safety training.
- Everyone. Keep to one page unless you have more than ten years of experience.

What to leave out
- Hours you cannot show in a logbook. Recruiters ask for logbooks.
- Aircraft you only sat in. List what you flew or worked on.
- Vague safety claims. Use a record, a figure, or a committee role.
- Personal data. No photo, age or marital status on a US resume.
