Biotechnology Resume: 6 Examples for Lab, Process and R&D

By · Published · Updated

6 min read

A biotechnology resume names the techniques you have run (cell culture, qPCR, HPLC, ELISA, fermentation), the quality system you worked under (GLP or GMP), and the result: a method that went into use, a batch that passed, a project that moved forward. Below are six complete biotechnology resume examples, from a new lab associate to a scientist and a manager, plus how to organize a techniques section and what to leave out.

A recruiter at a biotech company does not read for passion. The posting names seven techniques and three systems, and the first pass is a search for them. If "flow cytometry" is on your bench but not on your page, the search cannot find it.

Example 1: a lab associate, new graduate

If you are early, the techniques section carries the page. Pair every technique with the project where you used it.

Entry level: Lab associate, new graduate in biotechnology, complete example, 153 words

What the sources agree on

The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database describes what a biological technician does: "Set up, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, monitor experiments, collect data and samples, make observations, and calculate and record results." That sentence is a ready-made checklist for the bullets in an entry-level resume.

For scientists, O*NET describes biochemists and biophysicists as people who "Study the chemical composition or physical principles of living cells and organisms, their electrical and mechanical energy, and related phenomena." In a resume for those roles, the techniques and the projects they served matter more than the title.

MIT's career office, in its resume guide, says exactly what to do with a technique: "For lab work, mention specific techniques." It adds that putting them in experience descriptions "reinforces them by putting them in context." Harvard's career services asks for resume language that is "Specific rather than general", in its resume guide.

How to organize a techniques section

List techniques in groups, by the type of work, and keep each group to a short line. Group names help a skimming reader and the search tools that parse your file.

Match the list to the posting. If it asks for six techniques and you have five, list the five in the same words it uses, and add a project where you used each. For related guides, see the lab skills resume page, the biologist resume and pharma resume examples. For layouts, open the lab technician resume and the research assistant resume.

What to leave out

Frequently asked questions

What should a biotechnology resume include?

A summary, laboratory techniques, experience with projects and results, education, and publications or posters. Include GLP or GMP experience when it applies.

How do I write a biotech resume with no industry experience?

Use academic research, internships and course projects. Name each technique, the system you used it in and what came out of it.

Should I list GLP and GMP on a biotechnology resume?

Yes, if you have worked under them. Add the context, such as batch records, deviations or method validation.

How long should a biotech resume be?

One page for associates and early career. Two pages for scientists and managers with publications, patents or many projects.

What is the difference between a biotech resume and a pharma resume?

The core is the same: techniques, systems and results. Biotech resumes often stress cell-based work, new modalities and startup-style range, while pharma resumes lean on regulated manufacturing, clinical and regulatory roles.
