Accounting Assistant Resume: 6 Examples From Entry to Senior

By · Published · Updated

A resume for an accounting assistant shows accuracy first: the transactions you process, the accounts you reconcile, the software you use and the errors or hours you saved. Keep it to one page, put your summary and software skills near the top, and give each job two to four bullets with numbers. Below are six complete examples at entry, mid and senior level, the official description of the work, and the sections and mistakes that matter.

Accounting is the one profession where a typo on the resume is evidence. Read every figure twice, and make sure the totals you quote add up.

Six accounting assistant resumes

Each block is a summary and the main experience entry. Replace names, numbers and software with your own, and keep only what you can explain in an interview.

What the official sources say the work involves

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics covers the closest occupation in its profile of bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks. It says: "As organizations continue to computerize their financial records, many bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks need to use specialized accounting software, spreadsheets, and databases." That tells you what to put in your skills section: the software you use, named.

The Occupational Information Network lists the tasks in its bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks summary. Two are useful as bullet starters: "Check figures, postings, and documents for correct entry, mathematical accuracy, and proper codes." and "Receive, record, and bank cash, checks, and vouchers." Use your own numbers: how many documents, how many accounts, how often.

Harvard's career services, in its resume guide, says "Tailor your resume to the type of position you’re seeking." Pick payables, receivables or general ledger language to match the posting.

What goes on the page

For a full layout, see the bookkeeper resume page. A step up the ladder is shown in the accounting executive resume, and the resume skills section guide covers the list format. When you pair the resume with a letter, read the accounting cover letter guide, and if you have no experience at all, the CV example with no experience shows how to build a page from coursework and volunteering. Before the interview, accounting interview questions is worth an hour.

Numbers that fit this job

Accounting readers like figures they can check. Good ones: invoices processed per month, number of accounts reconciled, days to close, percent of invoices matched on first pass, collection rate, aged balances reduced, errors found and fixed, and hours saved by a better process. Use a figure only when you can state how you counted it. A vague boast reads worse than a plain task description.
