Availability on Resume: 6 Examples and Where It Goes

Availability on a resume is one line that tells the employer when you can start and which days or shifts you can work. Put it under your contact details or at the end of your summary, keep it to a single sentence, and make it specific. Below are six complete resumes with the availability line already written, for a student, a shift worker, a career changer, a seasonal worker, a relocating applicant and a contractor.
Plenty of resumes say flexible availability. Flexible has never told a manager anything. Is it Saturday nights or Monday mornings? The manager will not ask. They will pick the person who wrote it down.
Example 1: a student with a class timetable
Start here if you are applying for part-time work around lectures. Name the days and the hours, and give the date the term ends, because the employer is planning a rota, not reading a mood.

What the sources agree on
The UK graduate careers service Prospects says what belongs in the first lines of a cover letter: "Begin by stating the position you're applying for, where you saw it advertised and when you're available to start." The same logic holds on a resume. The start date is the first practical fact an employer needs, so it belongs near the top.
The same Prospects guide, in its page on how to write a cover letter, also says the closing paragraph is where you "mention any dates when you're unavailable." If you have a fixed commitment, such as a holiday or an exam week, say it once and say it early.
MIT's career office says in its resume guide that "when applying for a job you want to build a resume that targets a specific position or employer." Availability is part of the target. A night-shift job and a weekday job need different lines, so change it per application.
Harvard's career services, in its resume guide, says to "Tailor your resume to the type of position you're seeking." For hourly work, the schedule is part of the position.

Where to put it, and how to word it
- Under your contact details. One line, bold label, before the summary. This is the default for hourly, shift and seasonal work.
- At the end of the summary. Good for professionals who want the resume to read as a story first. Keep it to half a sentence.
- In the cover letter. For a notice period or a relocation, the letter can carry the detail. Our cover letter format guide shows where it sits.
- Not in the skills list. Availability is a fact, not a skill.
A line that works has three parts: when you can start, how many hours or which days, and any fixed limits. For example: available from June 3, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm, no weekends.
For header layout, see our resume header guide. If you are filling a summary, the resume summary examples fit well with the lines above, and our guide to tailoring a resume covers how to adjust the line for each application. If the job is in retail or food service, the retail resume templates show the same line in the header.
What to leave out
- Open availability with no hours. If you really can work anything, write which days and which shifts you have covered before.
- Reasons. Do not explain a childcare schedule or a second job. The days and hours are enough.
- A start date you cannot keep. If you owe a notice period, say so. A broken start date costs more than a late one.
- Availability on every line. One line, one place.
- Salary and availability together. Keep pay for the application form or the interview.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write availability on a resume?
Write one line under your contact details: the date you can start, the days or hours you can work and any limits. For example, available from June 3, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm.
Should I put availability on my resume?
Yes for hourly, shift, seasonal and part-time roles, where the schedule decides the hire. For salaried roles, a start date or notice period in the summary or letter is enough.
Where does availability go on a resume?
Under your contact details is the usual place. A second option is the last sentence of your summary.
How do I show availability when I still have a notice period?
State the notice period and the earliest start date, such as available to start four weeks after an offer. Employers expect it.
Can I say open availability?
You can, but be specific. Name the shifts and days you have actually worked, because open availability on its own does not tell a manager whether weekends and nights are included.
