Performed Synonym: Better Resume Verbs for Duties and Tasks

The most useful performed synonyms for a resume are conducted, carried out, completed, administered, tested and processed, picked by the kind of work you did: a procedure, a test, a repair, a volume of routine tasks, or a result. The one constraint: performed usually sits in front of a duty, and a new verb in front of the same duty is still a duty, so the rewrite has to add how much and how well. The Merriam-Webster thesaurus has the long list, and MIT's career advising office puts the rule in one sentence: "Whenever possible, include how you performed tasks, not just what you did." Below are the synonyms by kind of work and six rewrites by level. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Performed turns every job into a stage show. "Performed data entry" reads as if there was an audience, an interval and a review in the morning paper. Harvard's resume guide agrees, in its way: its verb list files performed under creative, next to acted and composed.
A medical assistant's duties, rewritten
Healthcare resumes use performed more than anywhere else, often several times in one job. Here is an entry-level medical assistant with a full day of real work hidden behind one verb.

Entry level: Medical assistant, family practice (55 words)
Before - Performed various clinical and administrative duties
After - Took vitals and medical histories for 30 or more patients a day in a four-physician family practice - Administered vaccines and injections and ran point-of-care strep, flu and glucose tests - Scheduled follow-ups and processed prior authorizations, clearing a two-week backlog in the first month
Three verbs replace one, because there were three kinds of work. The reader can now picture the day.
Performed synonyms, grouped by the kind of work
Cambridge Dictionary's entry for perform defines it as "to do an action or piece of work". That is exactly the problem. It fits every action and every piece of work, so it tells the reader nothing about yours. Sort the work first.
- A procedure or formal task: conducted, carried out, completed, administered, executed
- A test or check: tested, analyzed, assessed, evaluated, inspected, measured
- A repair or upkeep job: repaired, serviced, maintained, troubleshot, calibrated, restored
- A volume of routine work: processed, handled, prepared, resolved, reconciled
- A result you were measured on: exceeded, achieved, ranked, outsold, beat
- A performance in front of people: presented, played, appeared, sang, demonstrated
Administered is the precise word in clinical work for medication and tests. Conducted is the standard word for audits, interviews and research. Each field has its own verb, and using it shows the reader you know the field.
Procedures, tests and repairs
These are technical bullets, where the right verb is often the field's own term. Each pair keeps the facts and adds scale.
Conducted: audits, interviews, research

Mid level: Internal auditor, manufacturing (41 words)
Before - Performed internal audits of financial processes
After - Conducted 14 internal audits of accounts payable, payroll and inventory across five plants in one year - Found $380,000 in duplicate vendor payments and wrote the approval control that stopped them
Tested: quality checks

Mid level: QA engineer, banking app (43 words)
Before - Performed testing on software releases
After - Tested every release of a consumer banking app against 400 regression cases before it reached the app stores - Automated 250 of those cases in Cypress, cutting release testing from three days to one
Serviced: repair and maintenance

Entry level: HVAC technician (40 words)
Before - Performed maintenance and repairs on HVAC systems
After - Serviced and repaired rooftop HVAC units at 22 retail sites on a quarterly maintenance contract - Diagnosed and fixed refrigerant leaks and failed compressors, with EPA 608 Universal certification
The certification at the end matters as much as the verb. For more on putting technical skills into bullets, see hard skills for a resume.
Routine volume and results
Performed shows up in two more places: in front of repetitive work, and in front of the vague phrase "performed well". Both have better options.
Processed: high-volume routine work

Entry level: Claims processor, health insurer (41 words)
Before - Performed data entry and other administrative tasks
After - Processed 120 medical claims a day, with 99.4% accuracy in quarterly quality reviews - Resolved coding errors with provider offices by phone, cutting resubmissions on that queue by a third
Routine work is still work. The number makes it sound like what it was: a lot of careful effort, done right.
Exceeded: you performed well

Senior: Enterprise account executive, software (40 words)
Before - Consistently performed above expectations in a competitive sales environment
After - Exceeded annual quota four years running, at 112%, 124%, 108% and 131% - Ranked second of 40 account executives nationally in new annual recurring revenue last year
Show how, not just what
MIT's guide goes on to say what "how" means: "For example, if you wrote software, say what language you used." The same applies to every rewrite above. Cypress, EPA 608, point-of-care tests and accounts payable are all answers to "how", and each one is a keyword a hiring system or a hiring manager can match.
The same guide also says to "Include more than the technical aspects of your experiences." A technician who serviced 22 sites also kept 22 store managers happy. If that was part of the job, one line about it is worth adding.
If your resume leans on implemented as well, the implemented synonym page has the same treatment. If the summary at the top says experienced, the experienced synonym page fixes that next. The full verb lists are in resume action verbs, and other worn-out words are on resume synonyms.
When performed is the right word
Some fields use performed as their standard term, and a synonym would sound odd to the reader who knows the field:
- Clinical procedures. "Performed 300 colonoscopies a year" or "performed CPR" is how physicians and nurses write it. Conducted would sound wrong.
- The arts. Musicians, actors and dancers performed. "Performed as lead soprano in four productions" needs no synonym.
- Contract and legal language. Services are "performed" under a contract, and government resumes often mirror that wording.
Outside those, use performed at most once. If it appears three times in one job, rewrite two of them.
Frequently asked questions
What is another word for performed on a resume?
Conducted, carried out, completed, administered, tested and processed are the most useful. Use conducted for audits and research, administered for clinical tasks, tested for quality checks, serviced for repairs and processed for high-volume work. Then add a number, because the verb only tells the reader what kind of task it was.
How do you say "performed duties" on a resume?
Do not describe duties at all. List the main tasks as separate bullets, each with its own verb and a measure of volume or quality. "Performed front desk duties" becomes "Checked in 80 patients a day" and "Verified insurance for every new patient before the visit." Duties tell a reader what the job was. Bullets tell them what you did.
What can I say instead of performed well?
Use exceeded, achieved, ranked or outperformed, followed by the measure. "Exceeded quota three years running" or "ranked first of 12 stores for customer scores" is evidence. "Performed well" is an opinion, usually yours, and a reader will give it very little weight without a number behind it.
Is performed a weak verb on a resume?
It is weak outside the fields that use it as a technical term. In medicine and the performing arts it is the correct word. Everywhere else it fits any task, so it describes none of them. Replace it with the verb your field uses for that specific work and add the scale.
