Personal Skills for Resume: 14 Traits and How to Prove Them

Personal skills for a resume are the traits that decide how you work with people and pressure: dependability, communication, teamwork, adaptability, initiative and composure are the ones employers screen for most. Listing them is easy. Proving them is the job, because every applicant claims to be a "hard working team player" and the claim alone tells a hiring manager nothing. The National Association of Colleges and Employers names the same traits in its career readiness competencies, defining teamwork as the ability to "Build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively toward common goals, while appreciating diverse viewpoints and shared responsibilities." Below: the 14 personal skills worth listing, the proof line for each, and six complete examples from first job to manager. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
What personal skills are, and why the word list fails
Personal skills are about you as a person at work: how reliable you are, how you treat people, how you react when the plan breaks. Hard skills are what you can operate or produce; our hard skills guide covers those. The two lists overlap with soft skills, and our soft skills guide goes deeper on communication and leadership.
A skills section that says "punctual, motivated, people person" and nothing else may be completely true and still contain no evidence. That is not a skills section. That is a horoscope. The fix is one fact per trait: a number, a frequency, or a responsibility someone trusted you with.

Entry level: student skills section with a proof line for each trait (62 words)
PERSONAL SKILLS
Dependability: never missed a scheduled shift in two years of weekend work at a grocery store. Communication: explain menu changes and allergy information to customers in English and Spanish. Teamwork: one of four student leads organizing a campus food drive across six residence halls. Composure: handle the Saturday rush on the register alone when the second cashier is on break.
The 14 personal skills worth putting on a resume
Pick four to six that match the job posting, not all fourteen. A posting that says "fast paced" wants composure and adaptability. A posting that says "client facing" wants communication and patience.
- Dependability. Proof: attendance record, keys or cash trusted to you, shifts covered.
- Communication. NACE defines it as the ability to "Clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with persons inside and outside of an organization." Proof: who you explain things to and how often.
- Teamwork. Proof: the team size and your part in the result.
- Adaptability. Proof: a change you absorbed, such as a new system, a new role or a new location.
- Initiative. Proof: something you started without being asked.
- Problem solving. Proof: the problem, what you did, what changed.
- Composure under pressure. Proof: the busiest moment you handle alone.
- Patience. Proof: the difficult customers, patients or students you work with.
- Integrity. Proof: cash handling, confidential records, audits passed.
- Time management. Proof: deadlines met while juggling work, study or family.
- Empathy. Proof: care, support or service work where people arrive upset.
- Curiosity. Proof: something you taught yourself and then used at work.
- Accountability. Proof: an error you caught, including your own.
- Professionalism. NACE puts it as being able to "understand and demonstrate effective work habits, and act in the interest of the larger community and workplace." Proof: standards you keep without supervision.
Personal skills examples for a customer facing job
In retail, hospitality and call centers, personal skills are most of the hiring decision. Write them into the experience bullets as well as the skills block, because that is where they read as fact rather than opinion.

Entry level: retail associate with personal skills in the bullets (64 words)
SKILLS Patience | Composure under pressure | Dependability | Bilingual English and Spanish
EXPERIENCE Sales Associate, Target, San Antonio, TX Help around 100 guests a shift find products, process returns and calm disputes at the service desk. Trusted with opening and closing the store as a key holder after six months. Covered extra shifts through two holiday seasons when the team was short staffed.
Personal skills for an office or administrative resume
Office roles reward dependability, accuracy and discretion. MIT's career office recommends PAR statements, activity, project and result: "To demonstrate your skills and achievements, use PAR statements to clearly and concisely describe your experiences". The MIT guide to writing about your skills shows the full method; the example below applies it to personal skills.

Mid level: office administrator, personal skills written as PAR bullets (72 words)
PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY Office administrator known for accuracy, discretion and staying calm when three people need something at once.
EXPERIENCE Office Administrator, Hartley and Moss Law, Denver, CO Manage the calendars of four attorneys, catching double bookings before they reach a client. Handle confidential client files under the firm's records policy with no access breaches in four years. Trained two new receptionists on the phone system and intake forms during a staff change.
Personal skills for a career change resume
When your job title does not match the new field, personal skills are the bridge. Name the trait the new job needs and show where you already used it. The career changer letters in our flight attendant cover letter samples do exactly this with composure under pressure.

Mid level: hospitality manager moving into healthcare administration (63 words)
TRANSFERABLE PERSONAL SKILLS
Composure: ran a 120 seat restaurant on the busiest nights, handling staff gaps and complaints in real time. Empathy: resolved guest complaints face to face, including allergy incidents handled with the kitchen. Accountability: owned weekly food safety checks and corrected every issue before the county inspection. Adaptability: moved the team onto a new booking and payroll system within one month.
The CareerOneStop resume guide from the US Department of Labor gives the same instruction for matching the posting: "Include your skills and qualities from the list." The list is the job posting.
Personal skills on a senior or manager resume
At senior level, nobody writes "team player" in a skills block. The personal skills move into the summary and the results: how you lead, how you decide, how people describe working for you. Our professional summary guide shows more summaries in this register.

Senior level: operations manager summary built on personal skills (54 words)
PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY
Operations manager who keeps teams steady through change. Led a warehouse of 45 staff through a system migration and a site move in the same year without missing a customer delivery date. Known for straight answers, fair scheduling and promoting from within: four of six current shift leads started on the floor.
Personal skills for a resume with no experience
With no job history, take the proof from school, volunteering, sport, caregiving and part time work. Coaching your younger brother's soccer team is evidence of patience. Running a club's money is evidence of integrity.

Entry level: first resume with personal skills from school and family (54 words)
PERSONAL SKILLS
Responsibility: care for two younger siblings after school every weekday while studying full time. Initiative: started a tutoring group for algebra students that met weekly through the spring term. Integrity: treasurer of the robotics club, tracking every dollar of dues and fundraising. Teamwork: varsity soccer, two seasons, team captain in senior year.
Frequently asked questions
What are personal skills on a resume?
Personal skills are traits that describe how you work: dependability, communication, teamwork, adaptability, initiative, patience, integrity and composure under pressure. They differ from hard skills, which are tools and techniques you can operate. On a resume, each personal skill should come with one fact that proves it, such as an attendance record or a responsibility.
How many personal skills should I put on my resume?
Four to six, chosen from the job posting. More than that turns the section into a word list nobody believes. Put the strongest two into your summary, give each of the rest one proof line in the skills block, and show at least two of them again inside your experience bullets.
What are good personal skills examples for a resume?
Dependability shown by shifts covered, communication shown by who you explain things to, teamwork shown by team size and your part, composure shown by the busiest moment you handle alone, and integrity shown by cash, records or audits you are trusted with. The proof is what turns a trait into an example.
Are personal skills the same as soft skills?
Mostly, yes. Personal skills usually means character traits such as dependability, patience and integrity, while soft skills is the wider term that also covers communication, leadership and negotiation. Employers use the words interchangeably, so match whichever term the job posting uses in your skills heading and summary.
Where do personal skills go on a resume?
In three places: a short skills block with a proof line per trait, the professional summary for the two that matter most to the job, and inside your experience bullets, where a trait reads as fact. Senior resumes usually drop the separate block and let the summary and results carry the traits.
