Receptionist Resume Summary: 12 Examples by Front Desk

A receptionist resume summary is two or three lines at the top of your resume that say what kind of front desk you run, how busy it is, and the one thing you do better than the last person in the chair. Below are 12 receptionist resume summaries you can copy and edit, sorted by setting: medical, dental, hotel, law firm, salon, corporate, school, bilingual and lead roles, plus versions for no experience and career changers.

The hiring manager has read the words friendly, professional and excellent communication skills more times than the phone has rung today. Your summary should say something the next applicant cannot also say.

Example 1: no experience

What the summary should cover, according to the job itself

O*NET's profile of receptionists and information clerks lists the tasks a hiring manager is picturing when they read your summary. Two of the first are "Greet persons entering establishment, determine nature and purpose of visit, and direct or escort them to specific destinations," and "Schedule appointments and maintain and update appointment calendars." Visitors, phones, calendars. A strong summary names at least two and gives them a size.

Medical front desks add more. O*NET's profile of medical secretaries and administrative assistants includes medical receptionist and front desk receptionist among its reported job titles, and its tasks include "Complete insurance or other claim forms." If you have done insurance verification or claims, put it in your summary.

Harvard's career services gives the style rules in its resume guide. Among its top five resume mistakes is "Not well organized, concise, or easy to skim". A summary that runs to six lines is that mistake at the top of the page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good resume summary for a receptionist?

Two or three lines that name your setting and its size, the tasks you handle such as phones, visitors, scheduling and payments, and one result or strength that sets you apart.

How do I write a receptionist summary with no experience?

Use retail, restaurant, call center or volunteer work. Name the customer volume, the phones or bookings you handled and your typing speed or software skills.

How long should a receptionist resume summary be?

Two to three lines. If it wraps to a fourth, cut a phrase.

Should a receptionist summary include software?

Yes, if the job post names a system you have used, such as a scheduling, hotel or medical records system. One mention is enough.

Is a summary or an objective better for a receptionist resume?

A summary, in most cases. It tells the employer what you bring. Use an objective only if you are changing careers and need one line to explain the move.
