A resignation letter effective immediately states that you are resigning, gives today (or the date you name) as your last day, offers whatever short handover you can, and asks how your final pay and company property will be handled. The constraint is that most US jobs have no legal notice period, but your contract, a union agreement or a company policy may still ask for one, and leaving without it can cost you a reference or unused vacation pay. Cornell's Legal Information Institute explains that under the employment at will doctrine "the employment may be terminated either by employer or employee at any time and for almost any reason." Below you will find what to include, six complete letters for different situations, and what to do after you send it. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

You have already decided. The letter is the shortest part of the day, so the only job left is to make sure it does not become the longest part of your reference.

What to include in an immediate resignation letter

Keep it to one screen. Every immediate resignation letter needs six parts:

October 9, 2026

Dear Ms. Alvarez,

I am resigning from my position as Sales Associate at the Northgate store, effective immediately. Today, October 9, 2026, is my last day.

Personal circumstances mean I am not able to continue working, and I am sorry for the short notice. I have left my locker key and name badge with the shift supervisor.

Please let me know how my final paycheck will be paid and whether you need anything from me to process it.

Thank you for the chance to work with the team.

Sincerely, Tyler Brooks

When resigning effective immediately makes sense

Leaving without notice is a real option, not a failure of manners. Health, a family emergency, an unsafe workplace, harassment, unpaid wages or a new employer who needs you on Monday are all common reasons. The cost is mostly practical: some employers mark a no notice resignation as not eligible for rehire, some policies only pay out unused vacation when notice is given, and a contract with a notice clause can create a claim. Read your offer letter and handbook before you send anything. For the standard version with notice, our two weeks notice guide has full letters.

October 12, 2026

Dear Daniel,

Please accept this letter as my resignation from the role of Office Coordinator, effective immediately. My last day is today, October 12, 2026.

On my doctor's advice I need to step away from work to focus on my health, and I am not able to serve a notice period. I have saved the vendor contact list, the supply order schedule and the visitor log in the shared drive under Office Admin, with a short status note for each.

Could HR confirm how my final pay and any accrued leave will be handled? I will return my laptop and access card by courier this week.

Kind regards, Priya Nair

If your health is the reason, our resignation letter due to health issues guide covers how much to say and how to keep medical detail private.

Family emergency and caring duties

A family emergency letter can be shorter than any other, because nobody expects detail. Offer a contact for questions and stop.

October 13, 2026

Dear Mr. Okonkwo,

I am resigning from my position as Team Lead on the night shift, effective immediately, with October 13, 2026 as my last day.

A family emergency means I need to care for a parent full time, and I cannot give the usual notice. I have handed the shift schedule and the open safety reports to Carla Mendes, who knows the current priorities.

Please send details of my final paycheck to my personal email, jmorales.home@email.com. I can take one short call this week if anything is unclear.

With thanks, Javier Morales

Leaving for a new job that starts right away

Employers are less forgiving here, so the letter has to work harder on the handover. If you can, give even two or three days.

Complete Entry level: customer support agent, new job starting immediately example, 108 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Entry level: customer support agent, new job starting immediately (108 words)

October 14, 2026

Dear Sam,

I am writing to resign from my role as Customer Support Agent, effective immediately. My last working day will be October 14, 2026.

I have accepted a position that starts sooner than I expected, and I am sorry I cannot give a full notice period. Before I log off today I will close or reassign my open tickets and add notes to every case still waiting on a customer.

Please let me know where to return my headset and laptop, and how my final pay will be issued. Thank you for your training and patience in my first year.

Best regards, Hannah Wells

Unsafe workplace or harassment

Keep the letter factual and short. The letter is not the place to argue the case; if you are making a formal complaint, do that separately, in writing, and keep copies.

Complete Mid level: line cook, unsafe working conditions example, 90 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Mid level: line cook, unsafe working conditions (90 words)

October 15, 2026

Dear Ms. Grant,

I am resigning from my position as Line Cook, effective immediately. October 15, 2026 is my last day.

I raised concerns about the broken walk in cooler door and the blocked fire exit in writing on two occasions, and I do not feel safe continuing to work under those conditions.

Please arrange payment of my final wages for all hours worked, including the double shift on October 10, 2026. I will return my uniform and keys to the front desk tomorrow.

Regards, Marcus Hale

A senior resignation effective immediately

At senior level, the handover is the reference. Offer a defined, limited amount of help and name a successor where you can.

Complete Senior: operations manager, immediate resignation with a short handover offer example, 122 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Senior: operations manager, immediate resignation with a short handover offer (122 words)

October 16, 2026

Dear Elaine,

I am resigning from my position as Operations Manager, effective immediately. My last day is October 16, 2026.

This is a personal decision and I know the timing is difficult. To limit the disruption I have written a handover document covering the open supplier contracts, the Q4 staffing plan and the two projects in delivery, and I have shared it with you and with Rob Chen, who is best placed to cover in the interim. I am available for two one hour calls over the next two weeks if that would help.

Please let HR know I will return the laptop, phone and building pass by October 19, 2026.

Thank you for four good years, Natalie Brandt

Email or printed letter?

Email is the normal route when you are leaving the same day, and it gives you a timestamp. Put "Resignation, effective immediately, [Your Name]" in the subject line and paste the letter into the body; attach a PDF copy only if your company asks for one. Our resignation email guide has subject lines and short versions. If you can, tell your manager in person or by phone first, then send the email the same hour so both say the same thing.

What to leave out

After you send it: final pay, property and your next CV

Final pay depends on your state, not your letter. The US Department of Labor says: "Employers are not required by federal law to give former employees their final paycheck immediately. Some states, however, may require immediate payment." If your regular payday passes without payment, the DOL page points you to its Wage and Hour Division or your state labor department. Return company property promptly and keep proof that you did. Then update your resume while the job is fresh, with your real end date. If you want a model to compare against, the resignation letter example page has letters with notice for the next time you have more room.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write a resignation letter effective immediately?

Address your manager, state in one sentence that you are resigning effective immediately, give your last day as a full date, add one neutral line of reason if you want, offer any handover you can, and ask how final pay and company property will be handled. Keep it short and polite.

Is it okay to resign effective immediately?

In most US jobs it is legal, because employment is usually at will and either side can end it at any time. Check your contract, union agreement and handbook first, since a notice clause or leave payout policy can make immediate resignation costly. A short, professional letter limits the damage to your reference.

What do I say when resigning effective immediately?

Say that you are resigning effective immediately, name your last day and your job title, and thank the employer briefly. You can add a short reason such as personal circumstances, health or a family emergency, but you do not have to. Ask how final pay and property returns will be handled.

Will I get my final paycheck if I quit without notice?

Yes, you must be paid for the hours you worked. When it arrives depends on your state, because federal law does not require immediate payment. Whether unused vacation is paid out depends on your state and your employer's policy. Ask HR in writing and keep the reply.

Should I give a reason in an immediate resignation letter?

You do not have to. A neutral line such as personal circumstances, health reasons or a family emergency is enough and protects your privacy. If you are leaving because of safety or harassment, state the facts briefly and make any formal complaint separately so the letter stays a clean record.
